Interesting.... can you post more details about your buddy's system and what software he has available?
HandBrake is another option, for conversions, but I'm not as fond of it. I don't like the interface as much, and I don't think it does as good of a job.
If your friend is doing this on a mac, he may need Flip4Mac:

It's not freeware, but it's a very, VERY good program (for what it does) and it allows QuickTime to handle the .wma and .wmv formats.
Hell, depending on all kinds of factors there's other things you can try out, but it's difficult to describe exactly what to do without knowing a bit more.
If you're not in a huge crunch and can burn a DVD, I will PM you my address and can take care of the conversion for you. One of the side benefits of having my job is that my bosses are pretty lenient when it comes to personal use of the professional-grade equipment we've got at the station. If I can't convert the file there, it pretty much can't be converted.
