So my GF and I saw the latest Xmen movie, X-Men, first class.

This isn't a masterpiece, but it's very good. I was a bit concerned about if the actors chosen to play Xavier and Magneto would be up to snuff, because these are roles that are a bit more challenging than joe bloe superhero, and they had big shoes to fill when considering who had played them before. However, they do an admirable job. While the plot have a few implausible moments, overall it was pretty solid, and it was interesting to have the Cuban Missile Crisis as a backdrop. Definitely worth seeing in theatres.

Me and Nathwife did this afternoon!

And Oh, what an amazing movie it was.

Unlike Anc, I couldn't find anything to say against it. Everything is awesome. It is definitely the best of the four.

Everything wraps up snuggly to what comes afterwards (old Xavier and Eric, and the mutants as we know them in the basic movies).

Magneto's motivations and reasons for becoming who he will be are masterfully detailed and played. I had a blast.

And there's a cameo that made me and my wife burst out laughing. We applauded.

Just an awesome movie.

I'm not sure why I say "very good, not a masterpiece" - it didn't feel like a masterpiece to me... but I was thoroughly entertained. And yes, the whole theatre burst out laughing at that cameo.

And we now resume our X-men discussion.

I thought it was neat to have Jack Nicholson play the role of an admiral - although I feel they didn't really use him to his full potential, he was quite believable.

Things that bothered me: I didn't feel the action of the Americans were fully credible - it would have been needed to be established more that they did not believe the X-men. I also felt that given his background at the Holocaust, it is strange that Magneto would then decide to use a "final solution" on humanity. The abused becoming the abuser perhaps?

But most of all, with Xavier being a geneticist/molecular biologist in the 60s, it made me think of the X-men saga a bit more like a scientist and made me realize that there is a *huge* logical error here. The mutants are NOT a new species, that will displace humans out of the way, the way Homo sapiens displaced Homo neanderthalensis . They are humans with spiffy genes, that is all. The "us vs them" is not based on scientific reality, and Xavier, a *freaking scientist* should have been pounding that fact.

Charles told him quite often that he was turning into what he hated. It was addressed.

Well in the comic books that theme has been explored ad nauseam, so I don't understand what you mean by un-scientific. It is a given in Marvel lore that mutants are the next stage of human evolution. They even have a name for it: Homo Superior.

... and people wonder why "mundies" get so upset at mutants? If there were super-powers on a scale like the X-Men series I'd be shitting bricks.

Seems like an odd choice of a super-power ;)

So just as a basis of comparison, better, worse, or about on par with Thor?

Better. Definitely.

Interesting, cause I dug Thor. Hadn't expected much from it. Hadn't planned on seeing X-Men either, but interested now

Definitely better. Part of it is that the X-Men, particularly the conflict between Xavier and Magneto, are more fun than Thor. Another part is that the 60s vibe they had going in X-Men was awesome. There were quite a few things that reminded me of early James Bond movies, like the yacht with a built-in sub-marine, or the femme fatale seducing the Russian officer to bend him to her will (albeit with an X-touch).

spoiler tags work better when used without an "s" at the end of "spoiler"...

Fyi.
