View Full Version : How Do You Wake Up In The Morning?

My boyfriend have distinctly different wake up styles so it got me wondering how the rest of you sickos wake up.

Me, I'm basically fully awake instantly most of the time. I wake no later than 7am. If the sun is shining in the room I'm in a pretty good mood but if it's dark I'm kind of maudlin and lethargic until about 2.

my body generally tends to wake me up either at 7am with nature's call, or 10am due to the fact that i've been asleep for longer than six hours.

I wake up grumpy, and in need of caffine, period.

To the noise of my kids either calling my name or just making noise for the fun of it.

Dead tired for about 10 minutes until the elliptical machine wakes me up.

Drowsy and not wanting to get up usually (especially on a work day). If I can sleep in until about 10am, I'm generally a bit better...

Coffee and food help the process.

The serious answer is that I'm an owl, not a lark. I hate mornings and drag ass. I'd rather greet the sunrise coming from midnight than heading towards noon.

Varies wildly, as does the amount of sleep I get. Somedays I'm the walking dead, and only really become aware of what I'm doing while I'm shuffling around the kitchen. Other days my eyes pop open and I'm rolling right away.

Other days my eyes pop open and I'm rolling right away.

That only happens to me if I've overslept. Most days, I slap at the clock a time or two, crawl out, put on some pants, then trundle out to the kitchen for some Diet Dr. Pepper. Then I go online and check the news and email. I try to make some time to cruise whatever forum hits my fancy. And I smoke. At least a couple or more.

Shave, shower, dress, read some more internet, then I leave. For where ever - work or if I'm off, somewhere, anywhere. I don't lounge around much.

Even though I set my alarm clock, I'd say that 99 times out of a hundred, I wake up whenever I decided I needed to wake up before I went to bed.

I wake to a cat meowing in my face because he wants his snuggles and then wet food breakfast. Depending on how i slept, I generally just force my body to get out of bed. I like sleeping in and can't do that most mornings.

I read somewhere once that there was no medical or scientific justification for people who consistently wake up "wrong", in a bad mood or such. Don't ask me to cite it, it's something I read way back before I was online. Early '90s or so.

After reading that, and at the request of my now ex-wife, I made a concerted effort to always wake up "on the right side of the bed". And you know what? The book was right. With a little mental effort and the right attitude, yes, I did always wake up bright-eyed and bushy tailed.

So, why do I wake up now like an old grump? Because I vastly prefer to wake up that way. It's the way things were meant to be, at least for me. Even my dearly departed cat knew very well to stay the fuck out of my way when I got out of bed. She'd never dare even mewl for breakfast until I'd shaved.

So, basically, I found out the author[s] of the book was right, that there is no medical reason to wake up in the slow, paced, mentally unfolding way like I do. And I then decided that those authors could go to hell and stay there.

I wake up bright and awake generally around 5.30am, though varies a bit depending on time of year as if the sun gets up earlier I wake up earlier …. Just hanging on for daylight saving now as I’m currently waking up at 5am. By the end of the day though I’m a zombie and need to go to bed.

Atticus on the other hand views mornings as evil.

I set the alarm for 4:30 AM and it never goes off; I usually wake up on my own from 3:30-4 AM. I then spend time waking up by checking email and such, and leave for work about a quarter to five.

Are you an 'early bird' or a 'night owl'?
Study suggests it's biological, rather than personality-driven
Harvard researchers working at Brigham and Women's Hospital have found that whether someone is a morning person or an evening person depends on a basic aspect of the circadian timing system that is known as intrinsic period. The study was published in the August 2001 issue of "Behavioral Neuroscience. "While some have argued that extremes in sleep-wake timing are personality characteristics, this study reveals that there is a biological basis for morning or evening patterns,” said Charles A. Czeisler, senior author of the study, chief of division at Brigham and Women's Hospital and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School. “In this study, we found that differences in a fundamental property of the circadian timing system, its intrinsic period, will determine whether someone is a ‘early bird' who awakes before dawn or a ‘night owl' who tends to stay up at night but sleeps in late.” The study was funded by the National Institute on Aging, Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and National Institutes of Health Division of Research Resources.

Now all that doesn't mean you get to be grumpy just that you may have trouble getting up. Grumpy is a choice. :)

I get up at 5:30. If I got more than 7 hrs of sleep, I'm good, but that's rare. Usually, I will drag my ass out of bed, lift some free weights, do some sit ups, a dozen or two pushups and then go run a mile. Then it's time to hop in the shower. I'm usually ready and moving around by 6:30.

On weekends, I sleep in until 6 and don't go running.

Alarm goes off, my wife turns it off and I clamber out of bed. I always have to use the restroom. After that is taken care of I lie down on the floor between the bedroom and the bathroom and play with our cat for 10-15 minutes as he becomes attention starved overnight. After he calms down I convince my self to do a set of push-ups then I go take a shower. After the shower I re-open the bedroom door and let light into the master bedroom as a preliminary warning to my wife that morning is upon her. I then start breakfast for myself on the stove. Then I go kiss my wife good morning and spend a few minutes making sure she is conscious. Then I get dressed. After that breakfast is usually most of the way done. I then finish cooking breakfast and doing any dishes I was too lazy to do at another time. I eat breakfast, then go brush my teeth and kiss the wife some more. Then I head over to Varaj's for carpool. 5 days a week that is what happens. I'm very much a creature of habit. Saturday and Sunday change too much based upon how much sleep I have had, what I have to do or want to do that day, etc...

Edit: changed out to our in reference to the cat.

Usually reluctantly. Although now that my husband has to leave for work by 6:30 am, it's easier for me to get up earlier, too.

On school days I'm up at 6:15, I potty and make myself presentable for the stand at the end of the lane. Then there's the process of getting my child ready which includes packing the lunch and bookbag, getting him dressed, dosing him with his meds and popping a quick breakfast in his mouth and off to the bustop. It's now 7 and I make sure hubby is ready for work and out the door by 7:45. I finally get home and only then do I actually realize that I'm awake.

On weekends, hubby and I take turns sleeping in. Sometimes I wake up in a good mood and sometimes I should just sleep until I can wake up in a good mood. I generally don't have time in the mornings to dwell on it.

I really dislike getting up... but once I do, I'm good to go and awake. Talking to anyone but my cat is not my favorite thing to do for about the first hour (unless there was some amazing dream), but I can and do have conversations... Overall I wake up well, I just don't particularly like to do it.

However, getting up before I absolutley have to... that's another story. I've been trying to drag my ass out of bed at 5:30 to work out for years now.

6:00 or 6:30 the alarm goes off. I hit a 5 minute snooze once. Nature's call, cigarette, shower and I am out the door. I used to drag ass but the last month or two have been a real ressurgence of life for me.

Typically I wake up while my roommate's getting ready in the morning, since she's got to be at work over an hour earlier than I, then I'll hit snooze on the alarm until I absolutely _have_ to get up. Usually I grab a quick shower, get dressed and run out the door, grabbing breakfast on my way to the office.

I really only wake up hard when I've burned the midnight oil the night before, since I average a little over 6 hours of sleep a night, I've gotten good at operation under those conditions.

In a tired haze. I play the snooze game typically for about a half hour, but whether or not I do, I'm always groggy, disoriented, and worn out. I never sleep all that well, so waking up is a moment feeling my own mortality.

I don't tend to be grumpy or happy usually, just stumbling around like an idiot. I often wake up to my kitty patting me awake for attention. I treat that like the snooze button. She gets a pat on the head, then I roll over and go back to sleep.

I'm a night owl and I dislike mornings. I sleep about 6 hours, and can't really sleep longer. The hour I get up doesn't really impact how out of it I am. 7:00 am or 9:30 am, I always am a zombie.

I actually sleep better during the day. If I can go to bed at about 8am and wake up at 2pm, I wake up rested and comfortable.

Typically, I sleep until the alarm rings, and I'm half dead for about two hours, which happens to be when I get my first cup of coffee for the day, at least work days. I've set my alarm to ring at 6:40 AM, and every time I hit snooze, something in my morning routine either has to give or I'll be ten minutes late for work. Two-three hits on the snooze button is typical...

Wake up? What the fuck are you people talking about? :what:

I'm usually alright after about 15 minutes of "stay the fuck away from me unless you want pain". This is an improvement from the 'before' scenario (when my sleep apnea was untreated) as the entire day was like that and I truly didn't wake up until late afternoon, despite being out of bed since 5am or so. Now I can actually go the whole day without falling asleep where I stand or sit, and when I wake up people don't head for the nearest foxhole.

I hate waking up almost as much as I hate having to go to bed.

If I've had at least 7 hours of sleep, then I usually wake up seconds before the alarm goes off. I'm typically alert and reasonably cheerful right away.

On the other hand, if I am short on sleep, then waking up is a horrible experience that only coffee can mitigate.

TiQuinn

I usually hit the snooze alarm once before actually getting up. I need to ease into the day. I'd rather wake up early, have a good breakfast and a cup of coffee, check my email, etc. before having to deal with any pressing issues (or kids :) ). If I sleep in, the extra sleep is great, but then I have less time to do that other stuff.

I've told you that before on several occasions both waking up, and in general.

Yeah yeah I know you think I'm way way too perky for a person who only got 4 hours of sleep, but you know you could always be wrong.

Apparently the really odd thing about me beign fully awake and perky is that I don't require or even want caffeine. I can't even stand the smell of coffee.

One thing that I found is that snoozing makes things *worse*. If I keep waking up at the same time, my body gets ready a bit so I'm only 3/4 asleep when the alarm rings. If I hit snooze, my body goes "yay, we're sleeping in!!!" and 10 minutes later I'm 100% asleep :(
