Anyone know how to convert those to another, more common format?

I've asked at another forum, where right out of the starting gate I let it be known that I'd Googled it, and found that there are two ways to play them:

A. Buy Monkey Audio.
B. Use Foobar.

So guess what all the suggestions are amounting to? Yep, options A. and B.

However, 1. I don't want to buy a program to play the one, single album in my entire collection in that format, and 2. I don't care for Foobar, and I use Winamp pretty much exclusively. WMP in a pinch.

I've downloaded and installed the Monkey Audio Codec for Winamp, but the album still won't play. Anyone know of a way, other than the two options above, to convert the files?

I have a program called Joyce Audio Converter that at least has *.ape as part of the default filter and as one of the file types it can convert to. It's possible that I got it from one of the Giveaway of the day thingies, though.

This says Monkey Audio is free.

Well, fuck all. I looked all over last night, and found nothing like that at all. Even the Monkey Audio web page I looked at said there was not a free converter.

My Google-fu is weak. Very weak. I feel much shame. :ashamed:

This file incoludes a Winamp Ape-Plugin.

No converter but you can put the Ape-files in your normal playlist...

Thanks for the help. I got that through Varaj's link though.

But oddly enough, once I got the codec I needed, I was able at last to listen to the album that was making me buggy. The one album in all my hundreds upon hundreds recorded in the APE format.

And it blew chunks so rotten and foul the stain in my mind will take days to remove. Ok, maybe not days. But it will live me and terrorize me until I got to bed, for sure.

Now, I no longer need the danged plug-in. APE is not a very widely used music format. This is the first time I'd ever come across it.
