Why are they all so crappy? I've been dealing with them for various things for nearly 20 years now and I have to say my experience has been less than pleasent.

Why are they all so unprofessional? Even the names with good reputations around here have been a mess.

The only ones who have been good for me have been the painters and Roto rooter's plumbing guys.

Today I get to try and get my downpayment back from the jack asses who were supposed to fix my steps and have failed to do so for months.

If I could figure out how to make a professional repair team I think I could make a mint.

My wife called them today and I can pick the check up tomorrow. Apparantly my overt hosility Friday got them to quit trying to save the deal or jack around.

Of course now I need a new contractor but it can't be much worse than this one.

I will rarely use a contractor without a positive reputation on Angie's List, and I'll always log feedback on contractors there.

I was going to suggest Yelp or some similar local bulletin board for recommendations. There's something here called the Berkeley Parents' Network which is where I found our wonderful plumber. It helps to be able to read about problems people have had, or about quirks that individual contractors have.
