So I'm in Vent with a buddy right now who is going through the character selection. I'm still waiting to pick it up.

Has anyone else grabbed it yet or planning to?

No, more's the pity. Friday, though. Oh yes, Friday I will pick it up. :)

My buddy is rather let down. There are no mullet options for character creation.

I bought it yesterday, but didn't install it yet. I like playing those games with a walkthrough handy (http://www.gamebanshee.com/), so I'll let it go for a while.

Also, there are reports of bugs, so maybe by the time I play it, those will have been ironed out.

I haven't heard of too many bizarre ones. Mostly memory leak issues that seem hardcoded into that engine at this point.

For the 360 version, the one I'm waiting for my roommate to buy, you need to reset the memory cache every so often and that apparently helps a ton.

We did find some legacy memory leak issues but I believe we fixed them.

However, memory fragmentation will inevitably occur in this engine, which is why clearing a 360's cache can *~ automagically ~* make Oblivion/F3/F:NV go from unstable to stable in some circumstances.

I got it. I like it. A few things I've noticed:

Ammo feels more scarce. I guess that's supposed to push you towards their crafting mechanic
Faction-specific reputation is cool. I blew the crap out of some ruffians and just walked passed some guys and then started firing. It was awesome.
I'm getting blown all to hell with my gun nerd (guns, science, repair are my tagged skills). The steam-based DLC bonus has been uber handy. I love my shotgun.

I didn't play the last Fallout, so keep that in mind.

I'm really not impressed with the graphics in this game. It feels like Morrowind or something else 8-10 years old. The textures aren't very good, and the animations are pretty bad.

That being said, I quickly forget about it after a couple minutes. The game felt really hard at first, but I'm starting to get the hang of needing to use cover a lot, or the right weapon for the right job. Not tagging a weapon skill at all didn't help matters, and taking a point out of strength was REALLY annoying until I got a companion who could carry some stuff.

I've been able to use speech and barter a few times each (all before level 5), and the confirmed bachelor perk has created at least one funny situation. Plus my science and repair have been rather fruitful.

I wish there were a better help in the game though - does stealing from a faction you're already vilified with actually change anything? It keeps telling me I'm losing karma for stealing, then I gain karma for killing the guys that the stuff belongs to. Doesn't make much sense.

Oh, and the disguise thing is pretty cool. Got to walk right up to a few people before capping them.

So far I'm really enjoying the game, despite the moon-walking dogs and rad scorpions doing hand stands.

So I am certainly enjoying this.

Playing an Energy Weapons/Sneak/Speech character and I already grabbed the Lady Killer and Confirmed Bachelor perks as well. I'm level 6 currently and am playing on Hard with Hardcore activated.

The early game is seriously giving me a run for my money. I decided to try and buddy up with the NCR and basically get in gun battles with any Ceasar's Legion I come across, so that's been interesting. Currently going through the RepCon center for Novac and the lack of ammo and stimpacks all game have caught up to me.

"Hey, you have 20 energy cells and 3 stimpacks to your name. Go clean out our basement full of stealth super mutants, hur hur..."

All in all, I'm certainly liking the feel of this game and it really, really feels Fallout 2-ish for some reason.

No big bugs or crashes so far. Getting some stuttering every so often but nothing too bad. My only annoyance is I turned down the graphics some as I don't feel like pushing this mediocre machine and it seems that even with being stealthed that baddies can see me before my view distance spots them. Might tinker around a bit more and re-roll a character not based around stealth for now.

Also, did I miss something or was there nowhere to repair for ages?

Also, fuck Radscorpions. Fuck packs of multiple Radscorpions even harder.

You went with energy weapons?

In F3, you didn't get access to energy weapons until way later into the game, does it mean you can go with them from the get go?

Cool.

From what I read, I think I'll go with Energy Weapons, Speech, and Science.

That's too bad, because I really liked, in F3, Repair and Lockpick. Since some have said that F3NV is cheap when it comes to caps and ammo, Repair and Lockpick seem even more important...

I also read once that melee/unarmed is very good, so I'm considering also going that route.

Fists or baseball bats don't need no magazines.

I've had more chance to use repair and science (in terms of checks) than speech. Though repair (I think) allows you to make full use of the ammo crafting facilities, which allows you to convert energy cells as well.

I'd recommend that you play hardcore btw, the need for food/water/sleep makes things a lot more fun :D

Yup, I had a starting Laser Pistol that Doc gives you, plus I think I found one there in town. Found a Plasma Pistol in Primm as well and a Laser Rifle on the way to Novac. I don't have Repair tagged, so they're in dreadful condition and ammo is a bit scarce. Of course, ammo feels scarce anyways and having a low Guns skill feels like I just waste ammo shooting at targets with whatever I happen to have lying around.

It is? I thought it would just make things more tedious... there's no advantage to do it like that.

Wouldn't carrying all that food and water reduce your inventory space too? Carrying weight is one of the major hurdles of this game after all.

Darkfire

It does reduce space (plus you'll need to worry about limb damage as only doctor's bags will heal that). Guess it depends on how survivalist you feel.

I figured I'd try Hardcore also and it's not too bad. Food is hardly a noticeable issue, but staying hydrated can be a bit more of a pain. Fortunately, there are enough toilets and water fountains in the world to make it much less of an issue. Just got to watch your rad levels as a result.

I've got it on the 360 and am loving the game in general. It's buggy as fuck though, my game seems to freeze at least once every two hours. I've fallen through floors, gotten stuck in terrain, had the game freeze when opening the PipBoy, etc.

The worst is the merchant at the NCR base/border to California. He is consistently bugged and freezes the game if I talk to him at all. There is a second merchant there that wanders too, and if I'm not careful which is which (hard to tell them apart), I pick the buggy one.

The story is deeper than F3 and the scenery is awesome (and mostly accurate, something I couldn't appreciate with F3 not knowing the DC area). The quests and people haven't been as compelling yet since they feel a lot like F3. I'm about 10-12 hours in to the game and around 10th level. I'm playing on Hard but not Hardcore yet. That part of it doesn't appeal as much.

Darkfire

I'm finding the storyline written into the smaller locations a lot more interesting than in FO3. The conflict in the South East corner, Vault 11 and Camp Guardian all got me a lot more involved than anything I came across in FO3. The game world also feels huge, I'm about lvl 20 and 20 hours in the game and I've only just hit Vegas.

Trainz: For energy weapons make sure you investigate the REPCONN parts of the game.

Kastil: Guess it depends on your son's age, but the story and dialogue are a lot more adult in nature than FO3. I've just taken a contract on a raping, pyromaniac tribal and the dialogue doesn't shy away from why they want him dead.

Yes! That Q-35 Matter Modulator, or whatever it is, is absolutely amazing. They held me over until I could buy the Gauss Rifle.

My character is about level 18 and I'm unsure how long I've spent in game really because of how easily I lose track of time. I've spent very little time in Vegas itself and I mostly just walked into Benny's Casino and decided to light everyone up when they tried to take my guns. I'm filthy rich from playing the slots in one of the casinos in Freeside and I'm a member of the BoS and the Kings. Power Armor + Gauss Rifle = Fallout, imo. But, thought some mistakes I ended up Hated with both the NCR and the Legion so I have a feeling when I go visit the Dam it will be super interesting.

Also:
Seeing Marcus in Jacbostown felt like an awesome nod to Fallout 2.

Eh. Does he read books? A lot of my assigned reading in high school involved terrible terrible people doing terrible things. So did my pleasure reading. Does he watch Law & Order? I'd say it's a 50/50 crap shoot that the case involves so sort of sexual assault.

Fallout NV is just about as graphic as L&O. No graphic discussions and the only difference is that they can call the perp a "fucking scumbag". You won't necessarily (I mean, I haven't seen it in game) find people copulating. It's referred to (there are brothels and strip clubs, but hey, it's Vegas), but it's not depicted and you can't do it.

I remember reading Lord Foul's Bane in 8th grade and having to write a book report on it. My teacher was not particularly happy that I had talked about rape in my book report. Nor was my father, when he asked why I read that book. He'd told me "If you're so damn bored, grab a book from the bookcase and read it damnit. Leave me alone." I did.

I coulda sworn I posted in this thread... but it's gone.

Anyway I'm playing it.

Digging the setting and plot.

I kind of like the mechanic where you break down ammo to make more in the sizes you want. It's the sort of thing people would do in a post-apocolyptic world. The cooking/survivalism recipes feel exactly like potionmaking/alchemy in fantasy games, though. "I collected 3 plants and now I can make a healing potion!"

I'm going Energy Weapons, Repair, Science, and Speech. I got lockpicking to 25 just because I hate running into "Easy" locks I can't open.

I started with a Laser Pistol (maybe from DLC? I didn't pay much attention to what it was giving me), but its damage output seems pathetic. Even with my Energy Weapons at 40, and my Guns at 15, I seem to be better off using my guns.

Just got a Laser Rifle, and it's a lot better.

I picked the Wild Wasteland perk, but not sure I've seen it do anything yet.

I'm having a hard time figuring out why some things show up in quests and some in notes. "Investigate Ranger Station Charlie" is a note, for example, even though it has me traveling to a specific location, accomplishing an objective, and reporting back to the guy who asked me to do it. There are a few other "notes" like this.

I'm level 6 or so, and just finished the storyline with the ghouls at the rocket factory.

It's during the quest to hire three prostitutes for a Casino that caters to clients with exotic tastes. You have to find a Ghoul (decaying Zombie-like creature) in a Cowboy outfit for one client to fuck. You get her to take the job by liquoring her up with Absinthe.

The Robot is a normal robot until you hire a programmer to write a sex code, deactivate the robot, slip the new code in, and turn it back on. Then you get to test how well it works before shipping him off.

There was a third hooker too, but I don't recall what that one was off the top of my head except that it was twisted. They hit Necrophelia and Robotophelia, so it can't be too much worse.

Yes, energy ammo requires Science.

I don't think I saw a recipe for making energy cells from scratch. You can convert from one type to another, or recycle spent cells into a smaller number of new cells, but that's it.

Since I'm not using guns much, I'm building up my Repair skill mostly for quests and whatnot.

I like that when you hack computers you actually have to use your own personal brain.

As opposed to your character's brain.

You need a minimum Science to even click on the computer.

Then you get what amounts to a list of possible passwords. The more difficult the computer, the longer they will be. You get a certain number of tries to find the right one.

So it might list 20 words, like CAPPING, STAYING, STUDIOS, ACROBAT, SCIENCE, SECURED...

I get 4 tries, and I can click on any of them.

Then it tells me how many letters I got right. Say I click on STAYING and it says "Letters correct: 3/7".

So now I have to look through the list of words and find the one that has 3 letters in common. That is, they are the same letter AND in the same position. So both CAPPING and STUDIOS could be the correct password.

By selecting one of those, you narrow it down further.

If you use up your number of tries, the computer locks you out and you can't ever try to hack it again. (unless, of course, you cheat and reload and try again)

When you get in, you can open doors/safes, disarm security systems, access emails (fills in history and plot), or all kinds of stuff.

Recently I updated a user's profile to match my own face so I could get past a facial-recognition-based security robot.

Andreas

One important thing with hacking:

If you find something like that (>>[<) you can click it instead of a word to get more tries or delete wrong entries.

 Poor guy. I sympathize.

If he's ever frustrated with his face betraying him like that, feel free to share one of my terrifying stories. This was from a blog post I wrote in '08, still going to college.

I’m pretty smooth. Oh, no question. If you look at my speaking ability now and compared it to my eloquence back as a youth in Spring Valley, you’d see notable positive changes.

But obviously not enough.

A beautiful young woman, we shall say, call her… Schmatie, has been in the Mechanical Engineering program at my side for years now. We took a bunch of our first classes together and we even met at Freshman Orientation. Then and there, I was shocked by her combination of wry humor, smarts, a smile that could kill a man, and rockin’ good looks. Perfect package when you consider her desire to become an engineer. By the time I got around to asking her out, she dropped the boyfriend bomb and that ended that. Things became strange.

That was until a couple weeks ago, when I stopped her after class and asked her about some homework in one of the classes we share. She mentioned that she and her long time boyfriend were no more. My brain started running around, doing one of the best end zone touch down passes this side of the Mississippi.

Yeah, well that was just a little premature.

It came that Schmatie snapped her collar bone mountain biking this past weekend (how fucking bad ass is this woman?). The wheels turned in my head. A plan for a date, you could say, with chivalrous overtones. When not invite her over, cook for her, so she doesn’t have to stress her healing clavicle. It was, as the Guinness fellahs would say, brilliant!

Well, come Wednesday, I was sitting in our shared class, reading a book as I often do. The clock in my brain was quietly ticking away the seconds until Schmatie would show up.

Abruptly a skipping of feet and warm, pleasant “Hi James!” assailed my ears. My head swiveled towards the source. Schmatie’s face, split with a pleasant smile, beamed down at me. I took a breath that caught in my throat and threatened to tear out my esophagus. Schmatie was wearing a bright, yellow tank top today, showing off her wondrous figure. And rather than a sling, her shoulders were held back and immobilized by what looked like a mobius strip that crossed over her back. It also set her rack out on magnificent display.

Klaxon horns and whistles began ringing in my head. I had to play this cool. There was a perfect response planted somewhere in the cerebral folds of my brain. It had to be simple, but not dumb. Cool, but not ridiculous. I began parsing together words and came up with a glorious “Hiya Schmatie!” Again, more brilliant verbiage from yours truly.

But that’s not what came out.

I finally cleared a breath and grinned, “BOOBS!”

The sound of an 18 wheeler full of plate glass windows jack-knifing on the I-8 echoed across the room as what ever sense of normalcy I had was shattered. Schmatie’s head tilted to one side, her smile becoming a non-comprehending grin.

Steam lines exploded in my brain. Fires broke out. Sirens wailed. Brain cells began leaping from windows, abandoning this woe-begotten Hindenburg of man.

I stammered. I effing stammered. I do not stammer damnit. I’m cool. But I stammered.

“I…uh…ur – hurk – um yeah. Hi.”

Schmatie let out a laugh and just sat down next to me, just like every other day in our shared class. Meanwhile, my brain was hurling itself against the wall of my skull, hoping, praying that if it reduced itself to puddle of goo, it would excuse my Freudian slip. Hell, my Freudian plummet.

Then, to top it off, Schmatie skipped out of class early to see her doctor, depriving me the opportunity to ask her out.

Vault 11 had to be one of the most awesome exploration spots I've done so far in the game.

Tinkering around with a melee character at the moment. Got Power Armor and a Super Sledge plus a ton of drugs. So far I'm about halfway through clearing out New Vegas. Playing an asshole, more or less. Started off the game working with the Powder Gangers and am trying to find the Khans and Legion guys to start working with them. I'm sure I'm missing a large chunk of the game by wasting everyone in the Strip but I'm simply enjoying the freedom right now of being able to do it and have a blast. Fallout 3 was a let down for me so I'm enjoying some of the absurd combat in New Vegas and seeing how far I can "punt" people with the Mauler attack in Vats with my Super Sledge, assuming they don't distintegrate into a fine mist since I have Bloody Mess. Also, Cannibalism is fun although I haven't had any bad reactions when people watch me eat a corpse.

Find the 9 Iron off one of the Fiends bosses (the south west, outside vegas), you literally tee off with the body and they can go quite a distance :D

I agree with Vault 11 being an awesome spot, especially with the posters getting more and more readible as you go further into the vault. how did you survive the end?

Hah! I never played with that after I found it. I might need to at some point for kicks,

Yeah, the progression through 11 was great and the story as a whole was awesome. Going into it, I wasn't sure which Vault it specifically was as it's been a bit since I went through the Fallout Bible but once I started reading terminals I drew the connections and was excited to see what they did with it. The recording at the beginning sets everything up nicely.

At the end: I had some issues. I had Veronica and ED-E with me. I eventually got through it using Pulse Grenades and staying out of line of sight of those turrets while Veronica did what she does best. I had to leave ED-E outside the room as he was constantly dying due to the crazy amounts of bullets whizzing around. It took me several tries, but it was definitely worth the reloading and playing around with. First time I heard the recording playing I was definitely a bit creeped out. When the voice says the final "Good..." before the doors open, I was seriously creeped out by the way the whole scene had played up to that point.

So yeah, Vault 11 rocks.

So I was in Freeside, and saw a couple of kids chasing a rat, waving knives. One shouted, "We're gonna have rat to eat tonight!"

So I helped them out and took a pot shot at it with my plasma rifle. The rat melted into glowing goo.

The kids ran past me, shouting "Thanks mister" and crouched over the goo, shoving handfuls of it into their mouths.

(ok, so it was a generic "eat something" animation, and you couldn't actually see the goo in their hands, but still!)

Darn it, broke my game. No way to proceed.

Some spoilers ensue. For The House Always Wins Part 2.

I'm kill-on-sight for Caesar's Legion.

On this stage of the quest, I have to travel to Fortification Hill, meet Caesar himself, and use the Platinum Chip to open a bunker.

Being kill on sight is making this problematic...

I met a Legion guy at a razed village who gave me the Mark of Caesar. This is supposed to forgive me of all crimes so that I can meet Caesar. But it's not working, probably because the "crimes" were committed after I got it.

I also met a Legion guy who personally invited me to visit Caesar at Fortification Hill. He "wants to meet me" and this is the first time he's extended such an invitation to a "Proflegate."

The "crimes" were committed after this invitation too, so I guess it doesn't protect me either.

So the best I can do is:
1. Send my companions to the Lucky 33 so they don't do anything stupid.
2. Put on Legion armor, so I'm not kill on sight. Unless I'm seen by a guard dog or scout, who can instantly penetrate the disguise.
3. Duck around guard dogs, take the boat to the Fort.
4. Talk to a guy who says "Welcome, you're invited and expected, please let me take your weapons and Chip."
5. Duck around more dogs, and eventually get to Caesar's Tent.
4. Put on a Stealth Boy (I don't have stealth) because there's 2 dogs and several scouts inside the fucking tent with Caesar.
5. I can now sneak up and approach Caesar himself. I cannot pickpocket him. He won't talk to me.

But the moment the Stealth Boy wears off, a scout or dog sees me, penetrates the disguise, and then everybody in the room turns red and tries to kill me. I've tried hitting E constantly to try to talk to Caesar before they see me, but it's not working.

I don't have any weapons so I can't fight. They slaughter me.

I can reload from before I entered the fort, so I can run around and do other things. Maybe I can get tough enough to blast my way in and kill everybody. Maybe there's a way to get my Legion faction up so they won't kill me.

Maybe I can use the Stealth Boy to avoid the guy who takes my weapons... that's the next best bet. Maybe I can sneak in behind Caesar and take out the room with grenades and mines.

Also, I like a particular companion. He one-shots enemies all the time, and is really friggin' useful. I sent him away so I could add a different companion to complete a quest. When I sent him away, I sent him to the Lucky 33, and I got a popup saying he would be there if I wanted him later.

But I can't find him anywhere outside the casino, nor any of the floors inside, nor in my room. Am I missing something, or is there a bug? Now I'm afraid to send any of my companions there lest they be lost too.

If this is a main story mission, then this game is stupidly made...

Oh, and Darkfire, I tried your link... fucked my game even more (the graphics were all fucked). I called Bethesda support, they helped me out, fixed my PC. So I still have the same bug, but this game is SO GOOD, that the fact that the game crashes every 20 minutes isn't enough to make me stop and wait for the patch.

Still, I'd love to play bug free, like you lucky fuckers seem to do.

This IS a main story quest.
ok here's more spoilerish details:

After you obtain the chip and return it to Mr. House at the Lucky 33, you are given a mission to take the chip to Fortification Hill and use it to open a secret bunker. He says you'll have your weapons and the chip confiscated, but that's ok, because you'll get it back.

As you leave the casino, an emissary from approaches and offers you a truce so you can visit Caesar. This is convenient because you just got the quest, and if you were hostile to the Legion, you might be inclined to jump at this chance.

At this time I was still neutral with the Legion, so I figured I'd finish up all the Vegas/Freeside quests.

One of the quests involved helping some arms dealers. You're there during a weapons delivery, and it looks like they're selling the guns to the Legion. But then NCR troops burst in and start shooting. It was a doublecross -- the arms dealers were working with the NCR all along. I ran around and helped kill the Legion troops. It looked like I was suffering rep hits even when NCR troops were doing the killing, but heck, I can't remember for sure. Maybe I would have been fine if I sat back and watched.

But anyway, by the time the dust cleared I was fully hostile to the Legion. I wasn't thinking about the meeting Caesar quest. I didn't realize I was screwing it up. It was probably 2 or 3 days (real-time) before I finished all the quests and got back to the main story.

And that's when I realized I was screwed.

You can wear their uniform to have a neutral rep with any faction.

EXCEPT for the scouts and dogs, who see through the uniform and attack on sight, which cascades through any other nearby enemies, until they're all hitting you.

*UPDATE*

I managed to get into the camp without having the Chip taken. I got to the bunker entrance, but it says "This is not opened at this location" when I try to open it. Now what?

Trainz, normally what will happen is once you talk to House or else charge into the Tops shooting everything on site, someone from the Legion will come up to you and give you the Mark so you can still enter the Fort. Sounds like Lips did his ass-kicking after he got the Mark.

Lips, just go in there and start wasting everybody at this point. One game I tinkered with I just killed everyone near the dock, took the raft over and started wasting everyone in the Fort with no issues. I didn't get up to the Caesar himself because I ran out of ammo for my Gauss Rifle and started playing with another toon.

The building needed for the Platinum chip is a building behind Caesar's tent. Now, there's a guard there who will generally give back equipment assuming you're working for the Legion but I don't know what he does if you walked into the building when not working for them. Worth a shot though.

Interesting stupid thing that happened there:

You have to turn on two terminals outside, beside the solar mirrors. One of those two terminals is guarded by 3 HOSTILE dogs. I go in there with Boone. Me and him start waisting the dogs (easy), and then I hack the terminal.

As soon as I get out, a wondering NCR dude with his dog attacks us.

I reload, do the same thing, same result. The third time around, I notice that the dogs are called "NCR Watchdog" or somesuch.

:what:

So the game designers put some aggressive NCR watchdogs next to the terminal that you have to hack... in order to complete a mission FOR THE NCR.

I tell trigger-happy Boone to stay the fuck away, I walk in the enclosure, letting the dogs have at me without retaliating, I hack the computer, get out (Goofy, Snoopy, and Lassie having some more tasty morsels at my expense), close the door to the enclosure. Sure enough, when we pass the NCR guard and his dog, he leaves us alone.

What a stupid game design...

It's a side quest, so it's not game breaking. I hope they QTed the main quests though.

So Deathclaws really aren't meant to be fucked with apparently.

Last night while exploring around Sloan after I accidentally had to waste the entire town as it turns out they really, really hate people in Brotherhood armor. I started exploring the quarry some and had zero issues with the Young Deathclaws. Once the adults start coming out, then it gets crazy.

So, I'm up on a hill in Power Armor with a Gauss Rifle, right? Level 21 or so. I see a lone Deathclaw out by itself so I decide to snipe it. Now, I have about 7 Perception, 7 Agil and 10 Luck as well as 100 Energy Weapons and about 60 Sneak. So, it's a solid character, basically. I hit him with the first shot, getting a Sneak Attack Crit and it doesn't phase the Deathclaw at all. Now, I have the Better Criticals perk and the perk from Lily that gives you 20% Crit damage as well (I believe only for Sneak Attacks though). So this Deathclaw comes tearing across this quarry with me having time for about three more shots with having to reload after every one of them. For the fourth shot, I noticed the Deathclaw was a bit too large in my scope so I quit aiming to jump into Vats but the damn thing swiped at me, knocking me on my ass and crippling my head and then did a double axe handle down on top of me killing me out right.

This was not long after I did a Sneak Attack with the Q-35 and had the Deathclaws armor absorb the shot...

But yeah, from here on out when I get Power Armor, I'm getting rid of the set labeled "Brotherhood" and getting the regular set from the armory. I had no issues with it before except in this game. Apparently somewhere the NCR and Brotherhood are duking it out. I did hear mention in the game that the Brotherhood was planning to assault HELIOS again, which I actually haven't done yet for the NCR, so that might have something to do with it.

Hah! Yeah...

I actually cleaned out the Quarry last night. I was level 13, with El Gringo and using the Cowboy Repeater with all it's mods (which makes it incredibly potent). It took ages, as I was sneaking everywhere and finding the highest points I could while trying to only get the attention of a single Deathclaw at a time. I'd say all in all it took me about an hour and a half and about 1,000 rounds of ammo (no joke) but I did it, dammit. I only died like 8 times, too, so it was fun. Turns out there's a Light Machine Gun, or whatever it's called, shoved in a cave back there as well as a Fat Man and a Mini Nuke. The entire time I was clearing the quarry I was bitching to my roommate that I needed a damn rocket launcher only to find that I was actually right next to a damn Fat Man. Oh well, more fun for next time.

Anyways, I rushed to the end with El Gringo and I skipped almost everything except a couple quests for the Boomers and one for Jacobstown. I did Raul's quest to get his awesome cowboy armor and perk and then I picked up Arcade Gannon for awhile. His sidequest, For Auld Lang Syne, is absolutely fantastic. I won't spoil any ounce of it except that I recommend you guys do it. It's great, and also it ends up giving you an awesome support team for the final battle.

But yeah, I sided with the NCR and beat the game not long ago. I am absolutely impressed with about every aspect of this game. Oh, and the slideshow is back for the ending which made me happy.

So yeah, already trying to plan up another character. Not sure if I want Vegas for myself, or side with House or just work for Caesar.

Damn, this game is fantastic.

Also, I'm convinced that Energy Weapons is really the weakest of the weapons. Ammo gets to be a pain and the ass-kicking potential doesn't seem any different from simply using Guns. The Light Machine Gun is utterly fantastic and tons of fun if you can afford to keep it fed with ammo and repaired constantly (Built to Destroy + Surplus Ammo = Not fun for repairs). Plus, I'm walking around the wasteland with a toon right now who's stup as a sniper with a Sniper Rifly and Silencer with maxed Guns and Sneak and can one shot Deathclaws. If you don't have the strength to use it you take a penalty to DPS (it'd be higher if you had the strength), and it recoils more (you'll see it bob more while standing, not so much while crouching). You can still always use it though.

Hah, my new character is a blast.

I too wanted to see a melee/unarmed character so I made a high Str, End and Agil character to run around with. I tagged Unarmed, Sneak and Explosives at the beginning.

Figured I'd go work with the Legion, so I'm running around trying to find some quests for them. First one I found was at Nelson and it's to assassinate the Officers at Camp Forlorn Hope. Since I'm like level 9 a frontal assault would be stupid, so I slapped on a StealthBoy and Snuck around, planting Frag Mines on the Officers and got in, killed them and got out without pissing anyone off and no NCR Infamy gain.

Since that was fun, I did the same thing at Boulder City to bust out the Khans. I off'd the guard out front, walked through the door, popped into Sneak mode and planted Frag Mines on the 5 guards, blew them up with no Infamy gain and got to Liked with the Khans already.

I just now got to Vegas for the first time so I went to the Tops, kept my Spiked Knuckles, popped on a StealthBoy and caught Benny on the stairs near no guards. I popped into VATS and got him with a single upper cut from behind and one-shot him. Looted him and got the hell out without pissing the guards off.

Damn these things are fun.

In my Inv I've got a pair of knuckles called Love & Hate or somesuch. I never use them, and I think they're uniques. Don't recall where I got them, but look it up, it'd be perfect for your build. Got like twice the DPS of regulars.

If you don't have the strength to use it you take a penalty to DPS (it'd be higher if you had the strength), and it recoils more (you'll see it bob more while standing, not so much while crouching). You can still always use it though.

On the Wikia it says prereq 100 Energy Weapons and I got like 90. I can still use it.

Think those are off the Vipers around Vault 19/the Quarry. I grabbed them on one toon but on my Unarmed toon I'm simply too big a fan of the Power Fist.

That's not really a pre-req. Those stats are basically the stats needed to get the maximum effectiveness and accuracy out of a weapon. Think of them as more of guidelines, basically :D

Yup, this. Basically, if you have less than the prereqs you're less effective, not that you can't use it at all. I said strength above, but it applies equally well to skill requirements.

Well this would habe been fun to know BEFORE I was halfway through the friggin game.

No-way my meek Str 5 will allow me to do moar damage...

There's no way to get SPECIAL increase besides Perks is it? At least in F3 you could take into account BubbleHeads and plan accordingly.

You can get some implants from New Vegas Medical Clinic, physical stats only I think.

Can you get more than one in a single stat?

Say... 5 points in Strength?

Sweet. Not perfect, but really sweet.

Each implant can only be taken once and you can only have as many implants as your Endurance score.

As far as strength requirements, there is a Perk that reduces the strength requirement of all weapons 2 points. If you started with a 5 strength, wear power armor, and have that perk, all the best weapons in the game are usable by you even without the strength implant. You now have a 8 strength.

The only things you don't have the strength for at that point is the minigun.

Unarmed looks fun and some of the Perks for it and Melee sound awesome. Plus, some of the Unarmed attacks you can learn from NPCs in the game sound pretty awesome.

I just started an unarmed toon and remembered this comment.

Please tell me more...

:D

Where are those "unramed attacks" you speak of?

Edit: never mind:

So far, five different special moves found. You can learn the Ranger Takedown attack from Ranger Andy in Novac, the Legion Assault from Lucius at Fortification Hill, the Scribe Counter from Veronica, a move where you throw sand in your opponents face, called the Khan Trick, which can be learned from the Red Rock drug dealers (after you do complete all objectives in Aba Daba Honeymoon), and a standing power attack from House. (Needs confirmation)

Ranger Andy in Novac teaches you an attack for checking up on Ranger Station Charlie. It's an unmarked quest, so keep an eye on that. It's a power attack you execute while moving backwards to basically quickly knock your opponent on their ass.

The couple in the Great Khan camp in Red Rock/whatever canyon that sell and make drugs teach you another one after you complete their runner quests and teach them a lot of new recipes though Speech, Science and Survival checks. It's a side to side power attack that throws sand in an enemy's eyes. I haven't actually used it much.

Veronica has one, as well. It's a counter attack to use after blocking and it fucking rocks. Just get her a Formal Wear (I think from the Ultra-Luxe) and drop it in her inventory and she will touch it. It's pretty easy to execute and it's damage is comparable plus it seems to cripple chests fairly frequently.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

EDIT: Oh yeah, the Legion Assault which can only be taught by Lucius at the Legion's Fort. I think you have to do the very first quest for Caesar before he will talk to you. Thankfully, doing the first quest doesn't lock you out of working for any other faction down the line. It's a running power attack I do believe.

Can you do all those attacks in VATS?

No, from what I see the only special attacks that come in VATS are a result of you sinking points into Unarmed. The Uppercut and Cross are the VATS attacks while the learned ones are done in real-time.

So, um, Ceasar and the entire population of the Fort sort of fell down and landed on the barrel of my .44. Now if I could just find his number 2, the war would be over without having to do the Hoover Dam battle at all!

That was probably the hardest fight I've had in Fallout 3/Fallout: NV to-date. Especially the part in Ceasar's tent. Wish I had known I could retrieve my own weapons for it before I took on the whole camp.

Since ceasar isn't in the endgame, I don't think it will change anything. All the guards could be there with his No. 2...

I'm hoping it gets a byline in the end credits. I'll be disappointed if it doesn't. But yeah, I'm sure the #2 is going to be a final boss.

Correct. I killed Caesar one game while working for House and yes, that was a stupid hard fight. But, I still had to fight the Legate at the end and when I killed him, the General comes and speaks to you and congratulates you on putting "Caesar up on a pike" or something like that. The actual ending I haven't seen, because it keeps crashing on that game for me.
