View Full Version : Job Benefits !
No, not talking about health plans, 401Ks or non of that, DMagics "Promotion" thread got me thinking about the Real benefits from your jobs, free stuff you take home with you. The Cubical Monkeys among us got the office supplies covered but who else is there is partaking of stuff thats laying around ?
For myself my AC is always charged with freon, if I leave a house with a tank (about propane tank size) with a pound or so I put in my house unless I know a friend that needs it, it'll go to waste otherwise. Little bit of copper tube/ wire goes into "the bucket" in my shop to be taken to the scrap yard.

I own a restaurant now, so I eat free a lot. (thank the gods)
Also, left over building supplies like paint usually get used by someone here and folks bring us all kids of materials to use all the time. Furniture to paint, leftover building supplies, paint, clay...all kinds of artsy fartsy godness.
You're the God of Artsy Fartsy ???? I never relized
I get credit cards at 5%, mortgages below prime, general loans at up to 2% below street rate, no-charge chequing accounts, no interac charges, 20% off on insurance, my home high-speed DSL paid for, my Blackberry paid for... probably a few more banking services I don't use.

I get free tech support on my computers, since that is what I do. I sometimes get cast off parts and such, which I use to build linux boxes to push onto my friends.
Sometimes, I get a smoke and a pancake.

I work at a factory that makes auto parts (gaskets). So I get to take home... lungs full of semi-toxic chemicals! Yeah me! Other than that the occasional empty cardboard box... though we do get actual car parts sent to us in our empty plastic totes once in a while... rear view mirrors and stick shift assemblies mostly... not overly exciting really...

I get to work from home at least twice a week.
I get free bagels and cream cheese every Thursday!
I get to generally goof off during work hours, listening to music, playing Counterstrike, and surfing the web.
My boss and our VP, and our CEO are very cool.

I get free printing, binding, lamination, etc.
For example, here's stuff I've made at work for free:

There are no hidden benefits in my current line of work. It was quite an adjustment after twenty years in the record business, where I got compact discs of anything and everything for free whenever I wanted them, posters, tee shirts, concert tickets, and all sorts of goodies.
Now, the closest thing to a perk I have is when Virginia in Service Meat decides to sample some Chef Burger. Man, Virginia is one hell of a cook, but her Chef Burger is the best.
And her bacon.
Oh, and her catfish.
And her chicken Parmesan.
Man, I'd marry her in a heartbeat if she were single. And about twenty years younger.

I work for a friend, so although it's hard to get a raise, she is very free with gifts, like a bottle of wine the other day for staying later to cover her for a couple of hours (even though I also got paid to do so). She's also bought me Guess, Fendi & Olga Berg bags before (possibly only the girls will get the coolness of this...?), and paid for Coops' flights as well as mine when she sent me to a conference last year & we decided to make it into a holiday too.

I work for the government, so we get nothing except the "things you are not talking about" such as 4 weeks of vacation and a 35 hour work week (w/ flexible scheduling).
Mmh, I guess job security might be seen as a perk.
And it leaves me a lot of free time at work to prepare games.

I get to write my own checks.
I work from home when I want to.
I get to delegate stuff I don't want to do myself.
I take my dog and daughter to the office when I want to.

Not many extra perks around my office. Any Plumbing work I need gets done cheap or free, my cell phone gets paid for as part of my job and I have a work laptop and can work from home if I need to. I also get some work related benefits that aren't exactly in the catagory we're talking about, but make my workplace an awesome place to be. I set my own schedule, and have a boss that trusts me (so almost no oversight). Couple that with the ability to close my office door and have no one bother me when I need it, and its about as low stress as I can imagine a job being most days.

I suppose I could bring home the 50 or so free newspapers I don't have time to deliver, but I figure that I can probably do without those.
Damn, I hope I get that new job I'm applying for.

Er... I get to surf the web and prepare lessons and study and sleep during work hours, when I also get paid 150% for being there at night.:D The only down side is I have to stop whenever the phone rings and pick it up and act responsibly.
At my other jobs I get to talk for hours about one of my favourite subjects and people drink in every word I say. They even make notes and ask me to specify! And then they give me money!!!
And one of my students always gives me stuff like herbs and marmelade she made. And another one always gives me nice gifts at christmas and at the end of the season.
And for making and editing dictionaries, you get the dictionaries for free. That's a benefit worth 130 euros right there.
But I think the best benefit there could possibly be, is loving your job.

WorldWorksGames?
Yup. I just print reams and reams of that stuff on durable cardstock, on high quality laser printers. It's awesome.

I get to work with my college buddies. Folks I've known for 13+ years.
I get to goof off a lot and take a lot of time off.
I'm working also with old schoolmates - we go back 17+ years.
Trips to Ireland, and some other places.
And untill this week cats I neither had to feed nor had to clean their litter box - but now we're working in a real office instead of a spare bedroom at the bosses' place.
I miss them already.

I work for a contract company that contracts to the military so I don't get much of anything in the way of perks. I can say "No! and you can't make me, dumbass." to my boss anytime I feel like it.
I guess I can also get free toothbrushes, floss, antiseptic rinse when I bite my tongue or inside of my cheek really badly. and I can probably get free dental care if one one of our idiot patients don't show on a Saturday. Other than that I get tolook at hot military guys in uniform. That's about it
