Some journalist dudes have had the opportunity to play a demo version of Civ 5 (which allowed you to play 400 turns, I believe). How come nobody has leaked a copy of that demo? I can't handle all this waiting. To top it off, I can't get Civ IV to work on Windows 7 so I can't even use a poor substitute. :(

Wants this oh so badly. Elemental: War of Magic will have to tide me over until then. Interesting that they're using Steam for authentication. I love steam.

I've been playing the Elemental beta, I'm not sure it compares and (imo) is less fun than FfH. I hope the gameplay changes significantly before release, but it's getting pretty late in the beta.
I really can't wait for Civ5, that Kotaku article made it sound like a lot of fun.

Elemental has gotten a ton better with Beta 4. I can't wait to get my hands on the release copy.

I was actually referring to Beta 4. The interface is still horrible and the gameplay is unintuitive and unimaginative. There is practically no strategic tension in the game, you make a lot of decisions, but few of them matter. There's no tension between military vs. infrastructure, because you can easily do both. Same with Spells vs. Mundane armies. The tech tree is shallow and uninteresting, being unable to see the full tree limits your ability to make long-term strategic decisions, there are no clinch-techs to go for that will change the game or that you can plan your strategy around. Tactical combat is boring when compared even to an ancient game like MoM. There's almost no real decisions to make in it unless you have a spell-caster present and even then the decisions are limited. The resource system is more annoying than engaging and troop design is complex for no strategic reason. Why does every troop have slots for legs, chest, wrist, head, back and weapon? Is this necessary? Does it add anything? Has anyone ever been excited about being able to tediously select the items for these slots from a list of mundane equipment that is almost all identical?
I hope these things change over time, but I'm not certain it will be a great game at launch especially since it is due out at the end of the month.
Edit: I almost forgot, I really hate the cell-shaded art style. It made Borderlands more like a comic book, but here it just looks cheap. WTB better art direction plz.

Out of curiosity, what are your system specs? My card is probably about a year old, but everything else is brand spankin' new and it looks very attractive on my machine.
I read the elemental forums infrequently, but my understanding is that a lot of the core gameplay in the beta 4 hasn't been fully implemented. I'm hoping (and praying) that it will be a ton better at launch. And if it sucks, well, Stardock is great about patching. So it will get there, eventually.

My system is very high end, I can turn everything up to max detail. It's not the graphics that suck, it's the art. It's an aesthetic choice that I don't like. It looks decent on the map from a distance, but portraits, tactical combat or if you zoom in it's very distractingly bad. I'm not saying you're wrong for liking it, but it is not something I like, and it will definitely not be changed.
At least the interface will be getting a makeover, that is good. The gameplay is what I'm most worried about because I fear this game will be like GalCiv, a great application that is about as much fun as a slightly more interactive spreadsheet.

That must explain why I love spreadsheets so much. That, and I'm a PC.

I recently learned that Derek "Kael" Paxton was added to the Elemental team, that rekindles my hope for the future of the game.

A LOT of people are complaining about the river graphics. I was a bit confused because I remember the first time I saw a river in-game thinking I liked the gentle, sweeping curviness of it.
But then explained that they especially didn't like the beginning and end, and the fact that there are never, EVER any tributaries or intersections of rivers. I had never thought about it, but it's true.
