The Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is headed by Fred Phelps and which has made headlines over the past few years for a series of protests of events such as the funerals of Meet the Press host Tim Russert (because of his Catholicism and what they termed his "tolerance of homosexuality") and Jerry Falwell (whom they termed a "false prophet') and perhaps most notably the funerals of American servicemen killed overseas, have announced that they plan to picket the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con from 1:15 pm to 2 p.m. on Thursday, July 22.

The reason they're going to protest the con? We think it's best described in their own words, as posted on their website:

"Are you kidding?! If these people would spend even some of the energy that they spend on these comic books, reading the Bible, well no high hopes here. They have turned comic book characters into idols, and worship them they do! Isaiah 2:8 Their land also is full of idols; they worship the work of their own hands, that which their own fingers have made: 9 And the mean man boweth down, and the great man humbleth himself: therefore forgive them not. It is time to put away the silly vanities and turn to God like you mean it. The destruction of this nation is imminent - so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry."

At Comic-Con, lots of people wear costumes. It seems that on at least one day, a whole group of people will dress up as a bunch of assholes. Yep, that’s right; apparently since they have nothing better to do, members of the Topeka, Kansas-based Westboro Baptist Church, which is led by Fred Phelps, plan to picket Comic-Con in San Diego.

In case you’re lucky enough to not know who I’m talking about, these are the douchecanoes who protest at the funerals of servicemen and -women killed overseas. Classy, right?

Now why, you’re asking, are they protesting the nerd prom? You may have seen this quote around the Interwebz; it’s from the WBC site:

“Are you kidding?! The destruction of this nation is imminent – so start calling on Batman and Superman now, see if they can pull you from the mess that you have created with all your silly idolatry.”

Riiiiiiiiiight.

Well, apparently they are so incensed about this travesty that they’re going to protest for a whole 45 minutes on Thursday (1:15 p.m. to 2 p.m.), which though heavily populated, isn’t nearly as crowded as Friday or Saturday. And that’s if they even show up.

It would be worth the price of admission to see someone dressed up as Buddy Christ tell them all to go piss up a rope.

ok I get it the whole westboro church thing.... it's a gag right? Like Andy Kaufman? I mean it has to be... no none could be this stupidly delusional could they?

At least comic con gets a whole 45 minutes. At their recent protest in San Francisco at the Twitter head quarters they only stayed for a half hour (and most protesters spent most of that time texting). Local counter protesters came down with mock signs and performed around the police barriers. At the end, one of them remarked that, if they only stayed for half an hour, Twitter couldn't be all that gay after all.

Most of the geeks(like me!) that go to cons like this one and Gencon are the ones who have taken the general scorn and ridicule of society and turned it into something they are proud of. We take on the labels of geek and nerd with a sense of community and make them something we don't consider an insult.
Faced with adversity (like idiot protesters in serious need of surgery for rectal-cranial inversion), especially when we are in large numbers, we find humor and even joy in the scorn of outsiders.
I wouldn't be surprised to see WBC thoroughly mocked, perhaps in such a way that they don't realize it, with the resulting footage posted all over the internets.

If I were going to be there I would make it a point to go see the protest just because. But it wouldn't be the same unless I went dressed femme. I did enjoy blowing kisses to the protesters when I walked in the Denver Pride festival parade this year. :D

More Comic-Con news... Nerd Rage!

http://www.cnn.com/2010/CRIME/07/25/comic.con.pen.stabbing/index.html?iref=NS1

A Comic-Con attendee stabbed another near the eye with a pen Saturday after they got into an argument over whether one was sitting too close to the other, police said.

The injured man, in his 20s, was taken to a hospital with a minor cut, said San Diego Police Officer David Stafford. The attacker, also in his 20s, was arrested and booked for assault with a deadly weapon, he said.

The incident took place in the San Diego Convention Center while fans were waiting for a panel featuring actor Seth Rogen discussing the science-fiction comedy "Paul."

"The room was very crowded and the males argued over one male sitting too close to the other," Stafford said.

The attacker was later seen being led away in handcuffs. He had on a blue "Harry Potter" t-shirt.

The panel was delayed for about 30 minutes while attendees were shown a series of movie trailers.

"Well, there is a crowd issue. It's gotten really crowded. And if anything, an incident like this points to the need for more space," convention-goer Zennie Abraham told iReport -- the CNN website that allows people to submit pictures and videos.

"Should Comic-Con be in San Diego? I think so, but San Diego's got to make more space for it. It's become too big and I didn't think anything like this could happen because it's a chill event but it did happen."

Comic-Con, the annual gathering of self-proclaimed fanboys and fangirls, began Thursday and concludes Sunday. Aside from the stabbing, the convention has proceeded without incident so far, Stafford said.
