From what the ad says it's as good as Unforgiven, it's a remake of the 57 film of the same name, staring Van Heflin and Gleen Ford (Bale and Crowe are repriseing thier roles) with Ben Foster as Charlie Prince who had the best set of lines in the originial......Prince has been pretending to sleep in the lobby of the hotel where they're holding Ben Wade
Charlie Prince: Any strangers come in town?
Hotel Proprietor-Bartender: Not since you went to sleep, sir.
Charlie Prince: I might as well go along. She won't come now.
Hotel Proprietor-Bartender: Who was you plannin' to meet?
Charlie Prince: My wife - she ran off with a travelin' man.
Hotel Proprietor-Bartender: She did?
Charlie Prince: That's why I've been sittin' up all night. I figgered he'd bring her here.
Hotel Proprietor-Bartender: Well, whaddaya know? Mine ran off, too. I wonder why they do that.
Charlie Prince: I don't know. I've always treated mine alright - never hit her too hard.

The original movie is great and so is the short story it's taken from, one of many great westerns that Elmore Leonard did before he started writing crime fiction. If you're interested at all in good, pulpy westerns, then do yourself a favor and track down every Elmore Leonard western you can find.

Can't wait to see the new film.

Whenever I get Aces and 8s, I'm going to do an adventure based on the film. From what I read it's a better cinamatic RPG then Sidewinder.

Strangely enough, I picked up a couple of compilations of Leonard's westerns a few weeks ago. They're in the to-be-read pile. Should be on them soon.

I hadn't even heard of this movie until everyone on the boards started in about it. I'm looking forward to seeing in next week.

I've read through almost all of them recently. I'd love to see an RPG setting based on the books, because they all take place in the same area for the most part. My favorites are the short stories, though. Leonard has such a succinct and to-the-point writing style that his short stories are beautiful in their concise brutality.

For the novels, I especially liked Forty Lashes Less One (the least western of the bunch, oddly enough), The Law at Randado and Valdez is Coming. Have fun.

I have read Elmore Leonard's crime fiction. He is one of my favorite authors. Many of his novels were turned into movies but were so butchered in the process that he came to hate Hollywood. For an example of the butchering of his novel read the "Big Bounce" then watch the movie. The only thing remaining from his novel is the title. He got revenge on the movie industry by making any character connected with Hollywood an assshole in his later novels.

I can't wait to see this movie, but it might be next weekend before I actually get around to it.

I plan on reading them with a eye towards using them for Aces & Eights. Same reason I've gone on a mondo Jonah Hex tear, a Have Gun Will Travel tear, a Dark Tower tear, a Time/Life Western tear, a Loveless tear, a Gunsmoke tear, a Hopalong Cassidy tear, a Zane Grey tear...........

Someone needs to take my credit cards away from me.

If you want to run a western PbP, I'd be glad to play...

I've had horrible luck with PbP's. They don't warrant the time and effort put into them, even for a player. Never anything but heartbreak in the end, if you care for it at all.

But hey, move to Memphis. That'll work just fine. Satisfaction, guaranteed.

Saw it this afternoon, and liked it. But I don't rate it very high as a film. The story is great, but I felt like they did a poor job of telling it. I was very distracted by the general sloppiness of the film, mainly in the editing department, and the cinematography was uninspired. However, Crowe was excellent in his role, as was the older kid. I found both to be genuinely interesting in their roles. Bale was passable.

I give the movie a "thumbs-up", but I think that's mostly on the strength of Leonard's original story. A fair amount of the added material did nothing for me. It is a decent film, but far from great.
