Yeah, when Gretzky just stood there for a while, I told my wife "Aw man... technical problems. You see those open traps in the floor? Something is supposed to come out and it's stuck..."
Was that singer a fat guy in a white suit or KD Lang?
Lang was amazing. Her voice was stunning. Sure, she's ugly as all hell, but what a set of pipes.
On the OTHER hand... Garou's performance was pure shit. The ONE french song for our Olympics, and they picked THAT putz... I was pissed. Especially considering that the song they picked is an amazing classic, especially when interpreted by Reno.
Oh well... the visuals were stunning, the choregraphies really cool. I thought the big nod they gave to the first nations was a class act.

Apparently he's from the north-west of Canada. I agree, it was almost too patriotic (something we Canadians are not accustomed to), but I kept nodding in approval at every little thing he said. Especially with the intensity he said it.
Made me proud.

I didn't dig the pretentious leaping through fields and fake skiing down the mountain lightshow... but I did like the crazy white trash fiddlers. It seemed more honest and genuine.
KD Lang's performance was awesome. I was also proud, as a Canadian, that few people in our nation seem to flinch at the idea of an open lesbian getting up to sing a melancholy love song as the pinnacle of our arts presentation during the opening of the Olympics.
The only thing that disappointed me was that one of the rumours for the ceremony proved not to be true. When they were speculating on who was going to light the torch, one of the rumours was that it would be Betty Fox, Terry Fox's mom... and while she carried the torch into the stadium, the walls around were going to have an Image of Terry Fox running projected on them, with the funky Avatar-style 3d tech.
That would have been awesome beyond words. I was still glad to see her carrying the flag.

so i watched short track skating yesterday. there were three koreans and two americans in the final (amongst others). in the last lap, all three koreans took the top three slots and were going to get all three medals. then, the korean in third place decided he wanted to be in second place and tried to pass of the final turn. he wiped himself and the #2 korean out, allowing USA to pick up silver and bronze.
to which i say, haha suck it korea.
then canada thought it was going get its first home gold in the women's moguls, but the final jumper (an american) came in and snatched it at the last second.
i take less pleasure from this.

Interesting that those were my exact words when I witnessed it. They had said at the beginning of the race that you can't use your team mates to block for you but it seemed like that's what they were doing at the end. Glad karma gave them a swift kick in the ass.

the koreans have a history of skating at the edge of the rulebook. for example the infamous Salt Lake 1500m where Kim Dong-Sung actually tossed the South Korean flag to the ground after getting DQ'd (tossing the flag to the ground was shocking and nonsensical to me at the time, like that line from Goodfellas where the woman spits on her own carpeting when the cops come over).

Okay... I heard this morning that all three of the USA Hockey team's goalies have to remove or cover parts of their masks because it displays 'propaganda'.
Jonathon Quick: Has a Support our Troops on the back of the mask. That one I could see.
Ryan Miller: His classic "Miller Time" has to go because it's a beer slogan. He covered it with a USA sticker for the game. They also want him to remove the words "Matt Man" which is a tribute to a family member that died. ((picture here (http://www.tampabay.com/sports/olympics/olympic-news-and-notes/1073777)))
Tim Thomas: This one is plain stupid. He has the initials of all three kids on his mask. He's been told to have them removed.

apparently Canada is getting a lot of flak from the UK press - some are calling the Olympics a disaster. To be fair, there has been a number of snafus - the cauldron not working then the fence, the poor weather, 19 injured at a concert, the death, an ice surfacing machine not working, and perhaps most troubling, the protesters, the somewhat aggressive "own the podium" Canadian program.
But a disaster? We'll see how 2012 goes ;)

For the record; the winner of the men's skeleton contest? Awesome. Montgomery proved to be as amusing in interviews as he was in rocketing down that suicide course head first.
The bobsled team didn't fare nearly as well, though. The 2nd team was having a brilliant run, and the sled's driver steered too hard into a corner and flipped them, ruining what could have been potential gold. Which is a real shame -- I've been watching the training of that team since the summer, and they're beasts. Bobsledders are actually some of the strongest, fastest, best-conditioned athletes in the Olympics -- summer or winter.
Men's speed skating was a disappointment tonight. The Hamelin brothers bombed out, when they could have potentially owned the podium. I feel bad for them. Double irksome as it allowed the Koreans to snatch two medals, which irks me given how dirty they've been skating all along. On the other hand, Apollo walked out with another medal, and it's impossible not to like the guy. So props to our southern neighbours on that one.

Canada looked like they were panicking and taking too many shots at goal that weren't really justified. So they had a high shot number, but virtually none going in. The American goalie was pretty good too, though, as there were so many shots coming at him.
It's sad but I think the pressure got to the Canadian team. At least they get a second chance to get in.

Seriously... why is Brodeur still getting the start for Team Canada? I mean, he's a great goalie but I don't think he's played well at all in the Olympics. Hell, the Devils were losing left and right with him in net before the Olympics started.

Nah. Canada slacked at a couple points, and took bad penalties early in the 3rd, but without that they were on course for a 50 shot game. Any time a defensive squad allows 50 shots on the goalie, they're not doing their job. Even with those excessive penalties, and the period of slacking that briefly followed, Canada still managed to get near that point. The USA only got 23 shots on goal.
The flurry of shots that Canada unleashed weren't just panicked shooting, either, Angel. A lot of those were damned fine quality shots that would have decimated a lesser goalie. Miller's performance was nothing short of outstanding, ranking up there with the greats in the sport like some of Cujo's finer games.
The real mess here was Brodeur. I've got to agree with Kastil, here -- there's no way he should have been in net. Not with the way he played. In two cases he gave the puck to the USA, enabling their goals. On a few other occassions, he came out of the net to needlessly try and stick-handle the freakin' puck, and almost cost his team more goals in those cases, too. He wasn't just off his game, he was making horrid decisions and desperate plays when they weren't needed.
The rest of the team played an excellent game. They kept shots on goal down, and blasted the other team. The US squad was outmatched for the most part, but Miller was remarkable in net. It's been said that, like Cujo or Roy in their times, he's the kind of goalie that can single-handedly turn games over on other clubs. He proved that tonight.
I was hoping to maintain a veneer of class in dealing with this disappointing loss, but since Radu's been such a badly stereotypical preening cockmunch I no longer feel the need. :D
Hopefully the Canadian squad will take out the Russians after stomping on Germany. It's safe to say we won't be seeing Brodeur in net next game, or possibly again during the Olympics. I rather expect that if they end up going against Miller again, they'll be working specifically to pick him apart now that they know where the real threat on the US squad is.
Kastil
02-22-2010, 05:37 AM
Even though there are two Penguins on the Russian squad, I really don't want to see them go far into the Olympics. Maybe the bitter half of me is a little miffed on how well Malkin's playing considering he'd been less than productive for the Pens this year.
I really, really think Canada should think about switching back to Roberto Luongo or giving Marc-Andre Fleury the nod. I'm sure this is Marty's last go around for the Olympics but is it worth losing over? Canada should have won against Sweden but instead ended up losing a point to them.

Little bitch, YOU THROW CHIP!!!
I think the US has a shot at gold, if only because of Miller in net. I don't think that the goals scored last night were reflective of the offensive line, so much as they were a reflection of just how bad Brodeur played. Two of those goals he quite literally gave away to the US team, one was a lucky (though gutsy and impressive) slap at the puck toward an empty net... which leaves me guessing as to how the other two might have turned out if Brodeur were on his game. Physically he performed well. Mentally he seems shaken lately -- and not just in the Olympics.
For a team that's so good, Canada has surprisingly shaky goaltending this time around. Both Luango and Brodeur had bad patches right before the Olympics, but Brodeur's obviously carried this into the present. Luongo might redeem himself. I'd be up for giving Fleury a shot, too. Something has to be done, because the Russians will take apart weak goaltending.

I haven't shown much interest in the Olympics at all this year, but the curling is amazing. The women's has seemed slower and in ways more of a chess game while the men's seemed kinda like darts to me in ways and it is all fascinating.

I think we're saying the same thing. In the end, it was the goalies that decided the outcome.
Probably yes, for the most part. I was disagreeing with the idea that the teams seem fairly evenly matched. I think the US team doesn't match up, and what they had on their side was chiefly a hot goalie who had a good game, while Canada's was a good goalie having a bad game. The rest of the game was fairly one-sided, and if Brodeur hadn't made stupid mistakes -- even if he hadn't played more than a mediocre game -- it would have been a different result.
I'm willing to bet that the staff behind the Canadian team are currently studying everything they can to find Miller's weak spots for the next time they run into the US team. He's good enough that he'll still make a game of it, but I just don't agree with classifying a team that leans that heavily on one player as being evenly matched.
Kastil
02-22-2010, 05:45 PM
The funny thing is when the Penguins play the Sabres, they have Miller's number. Looks like Crosby couldn't find the magic to do it with his Canadian team mates.
Northcott
02-22-2010, 07:12 PM
That's why I think he'll be in trouble if there's another game where the shots are 2 to 1 in favour of the Canadian squad. Unless Miller's having another hot game, and the Canadian goalie is fumbling again, then it'll change the dynamic in a pretty serious way.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Luongo. He did fine against Norway and has a respectable career as a goaltender. His credentials are fine. Brodeur is one of the greats, of that there's no doubt, but he's fallen down on the job here. This isn't a tournament where you play your old favourite out of sentimentality. At his best, so far, he's performed in what would normally be labelled a mediocre fashion for the talent and insight he normally brings to the game. In this case, that's just not good enough.

Vancouver (AFP) - Canada will pass the baton to goaltender Roberto Luongo for their fourth game of the Olympic hockey tournament after Martin Brodeur struggled in a shock loss to the Americans on Sunday.
Luongo will get the nod for Tuesday's game against Germany to see which team advances to the quarter-finals to play top seeded Russia.

Saw this somewhere, thought it was funny.
Curling aka Canadian botchie is plain awful to watch. Don't get me wrong, the canadians make a lot of great things: bacon, hockey players, beer, the girls from 2 girls one cup (made that up)...but yea three is better than none.
Anyways the only reason I'll even watch it is because the girls are effing hottt. Where the hell are these girls, and how did they get involved in curling??
I think they could make it more interesting in the following ways. First, play outside on a frozen lake. In addition, it should be played on thin ice. What a shame it would be for a really hott curling girl to fall into cold water.....o dear.
Second, it should be a women only sport and they should have to play in bikinis.
Third, they should be allowed full contact of opposing players while they "curl".
Finally, the loser of each inning should have to discard 1 article of clothing. Since there seem to be infinite innings in curling that would guarentee some nice scenery.

The USA's chances rest entirely on Luongo's shoulders. If he plays a solid game, the US is in trouble, as I'm figuring Miller's not only going to take more shots on net this time around (I'm guessing they'll break the 50 shot mark in 3 periods), but they're going to be attacking him with more quality this time and targetting what few weak points he has.
If Lou pulls a Brodeur, Canada's fucked. You simply can't win without solid goaltending, period. If Lou's on his game? The US is looking down a tunnel toward a world of hurt.
Man, I gotta say, I loved hearing the crowd cheering after every save. At first it sounded like they were booing, then the announcer cleared it up when he mentioned they were chanting "Loooooooou! Looooooooou!"

If it falls out like the last game again, where the US is outplayed and outshot from end to end of the ice and in every period of the game -- with Miller standing on his head and dripping sweat at the end from the exertion of carrying the weight of his team, while Brodeur fumbled about, belly-flopped on the ice, and even got an assist on one of the goals against him? Yeah, pretty much.
The US may step up their game, though, in which case I'll revise that opinion.
For amusement's sake: The Russians are particularly bitter about their recent loss. (http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/olympics/vancouver/blog/fourth_place_medal/post/Low-blow-from-Russian-media-in-wake-of-Olympic-w?urn=oly,224254) Seems that one reporter in particular was so badly butthurt that he started lashing out at Canada and the US.

Yeah... I knew they were saying Lou but I bet most watching the game weren't hockey fans either. I think Miller faced 47 shots last time around and, IMO, he's one of the elite goalies. I still think MAF could do a great job for Canada. He's always clutch when it counts. But I'm a biased Pens fans too. :D
I think Loungo can be beat. He hasn't faced anyone with the grit of the US yet so it's going to be a good game. I expect a lot of pushing and shoving.
BTW, nice article Northcott. :heh:

Even though the US and Canada have to win their next games to face each other ( which really shouldn't be that hard), LET THE SMACK TALK BEGIN!
Checking the NHL states today, I see this:
Miller has a better Save%, GAA, and more shut outs than Loungo. Hell, I think Marty only beats him in shut outs. What does Lou have that Miller Time doesn't? One more win... wait... he also has three more losses than Ryan.
In the run before the playoffs, both Canada and the US had the same amount (14) but the Canadians allowed two more goals.
In the playoffs the USA allowed no goals against the Swiss whereas Canada let those stinking Russians score 3. The Russians can shoot the puck but as Canada's score shows, they're not good at stopping them. Nabokov plays for the San Jose Sharks who are notorious in the past few years for choking when under the pressure of the playoffs. The backup that went in, Bryzgalov, plays for the Coyotes. Enough said on that. Don't get me started on Germany.
On the plus side, Canada knows how to get shots on net. On the other hand, I've seen the Penguins (lead by Sidney Crosby) do pretty much the same thing and still lose games.
All in all, I don't see this being a high-scoring game much like the women's teams did. It's going to be good, it's going to get chippy.... if they get past their opponents today. They should but stranger things have happened.

Well, if they punk Slovakia like I think they will, that'll make 3 blowouts in a row and they probably in their hearts think that they outplayed the US in their last meeting, and maybe they did. I think it would only be natural after winning several games in a row to be a bit cocksure. Remember, the Canadian team is like an all star team, with egos to match. The Americans, while having a few stars, don't shine nearly as bright.
Yeah, the Canadians will want revenge, but they probably think going in that all they have to do is play like they did last time, get better goaltending, and it's theirs. They probably don't think the US will up their game. Certainly that's the way a lot of Canadians think, some even in this thread. ;)

So Jarkko Ruutu just got a 10 minute misconduct. Is that an automatic toss out in the Olympics?
N/m... my lazy ass looked for it.
Misconduct penalty – A misconduct penalty to any player, except the goalkeepers, involves removal from the game for a period of ten minutes. A substitute player is permitted to replace immediately a player serving a misconduct penalty. A player whose misconduct penalty has expired remains in the penalty bench until the next stoppage of play. When a player receives a minor or major penalty and a misconduct at the same time, the penalized team immediately puts a substitute player on the penalty bench to serve the minor or major. The second misconduct to the same player in the same game automatically becomes a game misconduct
Game misconduct penalty – Involves the removal of a player or team official for the balance of the game and the offender is be ordered to the dressing room for the remainder of the game. The offender also is suspended for the next game. A substitute is permitted immediately for the player.

I'm not saying the US isn't outplaying the Fin's, as I'm missing the bloody game... but really, they're getting insanely good luck with goalies being off their game in facing them. Anybody who claims that Kiprusoff is normally that sloppy is living in a dream world. The accounts say that the goalies weren't being given much support... but four goals that quickly? And apparently like Brodeur before him, Kiprusoff quite literally passed the puck to the guy who put the first one in the net.
I don't expect that tonight's game will be easy. The Slovaks managed to put out Sweden... and the Swedes aren't pushovers. If Sunday ends up being a match between Canada and the USA, it'll be a hard game. Anybody who thinks the Canadian team will be going into it overconfident is blind to the truth of how much pressure is on them.

Even if he did (and he's benefitted from that very thing once or twice these games), the guy's been such a class act throughout that I still feel bad for him.
On the plus side: Canadian men won the relay race, too. Double gold and a bronze today.

It was extra sad watching it. The women's skip choked under pressure not once, but twice. They were ahead going into the 10th, and she went for a play she could have normally done without breaking a sweat... and not only didn't succeed, but put out two of her own stones in the process. Canada was one shot away from a nice, clean win by a margin of 2-4 points. Then in the 11th, tie-breaking round... she choked again on a shot that would normally be well within the boundaries of her skill.
Still, it was her sharp shooting that brought them to Silver, so she can really only be criticized so far. She did an amazing job through the Olympics.
Men's curling is on this afternoon at 3 EST, 6 PST, if I recall. They're playing Norway, whom they beat rather solidly at the beginning of the tournament. Norway's a damned fine team, though, so it could go either way.

for all the hemming and hawing I think "Own the Podium" is off to a good start.
Gobbling up the silver and bronze? You should have mentioned gold in there, too, buddy, 'cause they ain't doing that bad there. :) Vonn and Miller tore up the ski slopes. Damned impressive job! Then of course there's Sean "What? There are other snowboarder?" White, who pretty much eclipses the rest of his field.
Mostly, this seems to be pissing off the Russians in a grand way. This amuses me to no end.

I only ment that their silver and bronze count was what had them 7 ahead of Germany

That stopped in the 2nd, and died in the 3rd. The Candians were playing weak by the end of the second, back on their heels trying to play a defensive game... and doing a horrible job of it. The Americans kept up a unified front and pushed through. By the 3rd, the mistakes of the Canadian squad were really costing them, and they were getting outplayed pretty consistently. They turned the puck over to the US in a number of bad passes and the lacklustre defensive effort in the Canadian end left them scrambling and looking amateurish at points, while looking fearful and uncomitted at others. At one point, four Canadian players had surrounded a US forward who had the puck and was attempting a rush on net... and all four just stood there and watched him until he passed it off. It was that sad.
The US richly deserved their comeback. In OT, the Canadians shook off the the lethargy, and started to gel as a team again. In the end, it was Iginla's relentless determination and magnificent playmaking ability that made the difference -- getting the puck to the net, which Crosby was near enough to for a rush and a slap to put the puck in and end the game.
The US played a fantastic game from end to end. The Canadians were hot and cold, with both ends being extremes; when cold the US squad made them look bad, but when hot they really did look like a team of superstars; moving fast, passing beautifully, creating opportunities, and making the game look good. Luongo deserves a huge amount of credit for keeping Canada in the game when the front lines flagged.
It was a nail-biter, and a magnificent bout. Congrats to our southern neighbours. There's no shame in a silver that was played for so magnificently.

Phew. Finally watched the game after a hectic day, and was it ever a nail biter. Great game to finish off the Olympics! I agree with 'Cott tha the Canadians let off too much and let the US get back into the game (great play for the tieing goal though - great, great pressure). I still don't know how Crosby scored...
Quite the last few days for Canada though. And the US - congrats on the medal haul!

Great game, sad we didn't win. In a way it was more heartbreaking watching our girls lose, because they aren't afraid to let out their raw emotions right there on the ice, so their tears were particularly hard to watch.
I'm real interested to see what kind of ratings this thing got and if it will move the meter on the Stanley Cup this year. NBC had better not bungle the marketing now that they have this to build on. Every "Game of the Week" for the rest of the year had better involve some Olympic highlight tie-in to keep pulling in those elusive NHL fans.

Okay, that was a great fucking game. I'm not the biggest hockey fan ... I'm from a desert, after all ... but I had to watch that game and it was friggin' amazing. Congrats to our Northern amigos for winning such a great game. Well played, my friends! It was an actual event and I'm glad that we, the US, didn't make it easy. For me it's the other way around. In fact, I feel bad for almost any Olympian who strives for that end and then falls short... except the US women's hockey team. I think the conduct of the US women's hockey team has been disgraceful in the past, particularly when on home soil in Salt Lake City. Rumours are that they repeated some of that behaviour in Vancouver.

During the Nagano Olympics, one of the Canadian forwards had just had her father die with Alzheimers a few days before. One of the American players thought that made suitable fodder for trash talk. Nothing like spouting obscenities about somebody's recently deceased father to bring up the level of class in Olympic sports.
In Salt Lake City, the American women's hockey team draped our national flag on the floor of their dressing room, and according to some sources trampled on it. Lovely display of the spirit of sportsmanship and class. The US team denied doing this, of course, then when it was pointed out that the info leak had come from their dressing room, they changed their story and admitted that they did indeed have the flag on the floor... but denied stepping on it. Because the floor is a proper place for a nation's flag... particularly the floor of a hockey dressing room.
This year one of them pitched the boquet they were given as part of the medal awards. Chucked it up into the crowd. Not that she can be entirely blamed for that -- they were fugly ragweed-looking things -- but again, it's that notion of display of class. Or lack thereof.
Given past conduct, I wouldn't be surprised if it was one of the US players being a bitter, whiney little bitch who got the media all worked up about the Canadian players coming back on the ice to celebrate -- afer everybody else had gone. Canadians drinking beer... the shock! I'm surprised that wasn't making front page news. There's beer in Canada. And women drink it! Next thing you know, they'll want to vote, or something crazy like that. The press has also conveniently glossed over that the drinking age is 18 in both Alberta (where the women's team trains) and Quebec (where the 18 year-old in question is from). It's not exactly mind-boggling that the mistake could be made.
Yet Montgomery, the men's skeleton winner, drank from a pitcher of beer as he walked down the main street of Whistler to his interview, did so in front of TV cameras, then jokingly auctioned it off to the crowd. Nobody said a thing. Apparently the IOC's got some egalitarian issues to work out.
Thankfully your alpine team, snowboarding icon, speed skaters, and figure skaters stepped up to show the world that most of the USA's athletes are above that kind of nonsense.
