We had good times playing Halo that first night. You will have to come up sometime to play Halo 3.

I'd love too, Heck, the whole experience of waiting in the early a.m. for the X Box is one of my favorite memories.

Damnit, now I really have to decide if I want an X-box 360 or not. I want to play Halo 3

Some good stuff coming out for the 360....

Mass Effect looks particularly awsome

My last real experience with a videogame was Tetris. Then all my artists moved in upstairs and one of them brought an Xbox. I got insta-hooked like a crack-fiend.

I will be playing that evening for sure. :)

I don't like shooter games that much, and even I enjoyed Halo!

... don't know anyone with a 360 though, so probably no Halo 3 for me.

Review?

Was there a satisfying end to the story?

What were the new gameplay elements like?

Have they finally come up with a decent human gun (other than the sniper rifle)? In the first one, the pistol was a better weapon than the assault rifle :what:. In the second, the SMG was as useless as the assault rifle, and the new assault rifle's three shot burst gave me the shits - it would have been better as a slow repeater like the old pistol was when you held down the trigger. All IMHO, of course.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Halo 1. And I might have loved Halo 2 if I'd had more opportunity to play it. But there were some niggles I'd have liked to see fixed.

Very fun but short.

They certainly close it up.

I really like the new throw down items (shield bubble, etc)

You agree with my take on teh other human weapons, or was I just a bad player.

Generally I jsut played with the Covenant plasma rifle or their railgum thingy in Halo 2. Oh yeah, and the sniper rifle. That thing rocked.

Depends on what you were facing but in general human weapons are supposed to be inferior to Covenant weapons. The Covenant do out tech the humans by a goodly amount. :)

Just remembered the shotgun. That was nice.

What I wanted was a plasma rifle with a scope. That was apparently what the human assault rifle in Halo2 was supposed to be (supposed to have the same damage per shot to flesh, but not be as good at bringing down a force field), but (IMHO) they fucked it up with the three shot burst. Perfect weapon for me would have been the H2 assault rifle with rapid fire a bit slower than the plasma rifle. Then you'd have had a genuine dilemma between the assault rifle (scope; but slower rate of fire and less shield penetration) vs the plasma rifle (high rate of fire and good shield penetration; but no scope and it overheats). I'd have gone for the assault rifle, but a less snipy player would have goe for the plasma.

Just my highly opinionated two cents.

Personal favorite weapon was the sniper rifle. Never could get enough rounds for it.

The scarcity or ammo, the fact that it was nearly impossible to use at short range and that telltale jetstream were really the only things that made it balanced. Man! Was it a beast.

I remember getting eight up to the top of a mountain in H1 and using the sniper rifle to kill unsuspecting covenant at insanely long ranges. One shot, one kill baby!

I've played through four levels so far, but I cheated and watched Varaj play through much of his campaign so I wouldn't have to wait any longer to see how the story ended. :o

Was there a satisfying end to the story?Yeah. I won't spoil it, but I wasn't happy about it. However, it was satisfying and it certainly wrapped every little detail up.

What were the new gameplay elements like?Gameplay is fantastic, even better than the other two. The weapons are more honed, sharper, do more damage and are more appropriate for what opponents you're facing. More vehicles to choose from, better placement of vehicles. Don't like the chopper, it's hard to maneuver, but the ATV is great with a rocket launcher dude in the back. Three different types of grenades, and throw-down items (deployable cover, levitation, trip mines, etc.) The environments are, as always, fantastic. Great vantage points and cover inside buildings and in jungles, sometimes challenging to puzzle out where to go to get the best shot, all while getting your ass shot at. BIG FUN.

Flood elements also take on a horror-movie feel a la Silent Hill when the Big Flood Daddy speaks to you. Wear a diaper.

The human weapons are much better, although the battle rifle is still useless. The SMG is more powerful. The pistol's fire-rate is slower than in H2, making it less badass, but the covenant weapons are so fucking awesome you're not going to want to use any human weapons until you see Flood, anyway. Then you need shotguns, but for the entire game a good brute plasma pistol (I think it's called a striker?) will pretty much kick the rear end of anything you come up against. You can double-weild those fuckers, too! Grunt & shield-boy plasma pistols are worthless, but they always have been. Needlers are classic useful. But here's the awesome stuff: turret guns, both artillary and plasma, are detachable. Yes, you get to lug around a fucking turret gun. Those two, along with flamethrowers are a third set of firepower you can pick up, but the ammo isn't endless once it's detached.

The most awesome of all? The melee weapon that beats a plasma sword: the gravity hammer. AWWW YEAH.

Don't get me wrong. I loved Halo 1. And I might have loved Halo 2 if I'd had more opportunity to play it. But there were some niggles I'd have liked to see fixed.

I'm with you all the way on that one.

Look left. :D

I've found, generally speaking, Covanent weapons are more effective against Covanent and Human weapons are best against the Flood.

I don't mind the assualt rifle, but I agree with Belladonna...the Striker (or whatever) is my favorite.

I'm only partway through the solo campaign (just activated the cartographer after leaving Earth). Hasn't been too bad so far...the transmissions from Cortona and the Gravemind have been delightfully creepy.

Finished the game last night. I thought it was good. Short, but good. I don't think it's Game of the Year material, but it's a somewhat satisfactory ending to the FPS series.

One thing, though...Don't human frigates have blast doors they can close against the vacuum of space or, say, a Halo ring firing? Seeing that the Arbiter made it back to Earth okay, one would think...

Also, Halos destroy all life in a 25,000 light year radius, right? Hope there weren't any populated worlds around the third Ring.

All right, that was two.

The Ark where the Halo was detonated was outside the galaxy in the empty space between galaxies, so no other planets or stars or anything.
As for the MC dying.
Two possible answers.
1. He didn't die but it was his way of retiring.
2. The Ark is surrounded by a slip stream sphere. It is possible the ship was hit by the Halo blast after the front of the ship had entered the slip stream so only the back of the ship was actually effected by the Halo wave. The blast doors wouldn't have stopped the killing wave. Nothing but distance would.

Did ya wait til after the credits? The game tells you what happened to the Master Chief. On Legendary, it gives a further mysterious teaser

Tip: On the high powered weapons that you can barely find any ammo for? As much fun as they are to use, don't use them yourself.

Give them to your computer controlled allies. They never run out of ammo. Preferably Elites, as humans die too easily.
