A whites-only basketball league aims to launch in twelve cities this summer, according to a report in the Augusta Chronicle. The All-American Basketball Alliance would also ban players born outside the United States.

The league's commissioner, Don "Moose" Lewis, claims that he doesn't "hate anyone of color. But people of white, American-born citizens are in the minority now." Thus, he says, the All-American Basketball Alliance would be "a league for white players to play fundamental basketball, which they like."

The report includes additional shocking quotes from the commissioner:

Lewis said he wants to emphasize fundamental basketball instead of "street-ball" played by "people of color." ...

"Would you want to go to the game and worry about a player flipping you off or attacking you in the stands or grabbing their crotch?" he said. "That's the culture today, and in a free country we should have the right to move ourselves in a better direction."

I have no idea how he could get away with something like that and I'm not sure he really intends to. It could be deliberate, to garner publicity, knowing that in the end he can't maintain that restriction. The guy has to know what he sounds like, so must therefore be doing it deliberately for some reason. The most likely motive would be publicity, unless he's trying to force some legal showdown, I don't know.

But, I believe, that while businesses and public institutions can't discriminate, it's perfectly fine for private ones. Private as in "members only" type groups. Such groups can set up whatever fucked up restrictions they please, and I think they should be allowed to do so. I don't know how that could apply to a sports league, however.

And I might be wrong regarding the legality of "members only" establishments and groups, I'm not sure.

The net effect is nobody but religious organizations which can claim exception are immune to anti-discrimination laws.
