I've had a song in my head, help me find what it is. I did a quick midi file of it (it takes a few seconds to start). Listen to it and tell me what it is please:

It's the signature melody for a kid's quiz show here in Sweden. Wikipedia tells me it was also used for a US game show called "Match Game".

Ha! I watched the Match Game as a kid, and never realized that Wimoweh was the theme song. I remember it being on the radio in the 70's and I have a 45 of it, but I can't remember who did it. Maybe Hugh Masekela...

It's not. Swingin' Safari is not the same song as Wimoweh/Lion Sleeps Tonight. Kaempfert recorded them both though, on the same album (which I think had an African theme), although I think Swingin' Safari was an original and Wimoweh was a cover.

I just listened to them again, and you are right, but the similarities are pretty strong. I think you may have the chronology backwards as Wiki dates the original draft of what became Wimoweh as early as 1939, with Pete Seger adapting it in 1951. The match game used to be pretty funny.

I don't mean that Wimoweh was a cover of Safari. I meant that they were recorded by the same artist on the same album, but that Wimoweh was a cover of a previous work and Safari was an original song by him.

Oh. That would explain why there were videos for both by Bert Kaempfert on YouTube. I'm really pretty unfamiliar with him and his work, but had the impression he was a sort of lounge-lizard/easy listening composer. I think he was a darling of the hi-fi set, to listen to while drinking martinis and cooking one's Porterhouse steaks. Oddly enough, I don't think my parents had any of his records. There's so much I don't know...
