KELSO, Wash. -- A suspected burglar suffered an arrow wound after a report of a break-in at a Kelso home Sunday night, police said.
Scott Schwingdorf interrupted the possible burglary in progress at a vacant home in the 1110 block of North 10th Street at about 11:45 p.m., according to the Kelso Police Department.
Schwingdorf then armed himself with a bow and arrow and followed the alleged prowler, police said. The man didn't stop, according to police, and Schwingdorf shot him with the arrow.
Police identified the burglary suspect as 32-year-old Gaylen Crane and said he managed to escape. But Crayne was forced to seek medical attention for an arrow wound at St. John's Hospital later that night, officers said.
Jim Chambers and Debbie Scott own the home where the incident occurred. A fire damaged their home and forced them to move out recently. They asked neighbors to watch out for looters.
"It's people like him that make the streets safer," Chambers said. "Especially when you're a victim already. It makes you feel a little safer when you got someone looking out for you."
Chambers said he knows everyone involved in the incident. Kelso police said they're still investigating.

Wow. When I read the headline, I thought, "killed with courtesy... as in bowing before someone" or "whacked upside the head with one of those industrial size bows one puts on top of the new Lexus that Daddy gave me for Christmas." Never did "bow" as weapon (aka wielded by Amazons and Robin Hood) occur to me. Guess I wasn't in a sufficiently medievalizing mood. Ted Nugent would be proud. He likes to hunt with a bow.

Obviously not a gamer.

It's kind of nice to see this story - as in, if he'd stopped him with a gun instead of a bow, the guy would probably be dead. So this way, he still gets caught, and hurt for being an idiot, but didn't have to die.

I wouldn't say that, bows are pretty darn lethal. They don't have the range or rate of fire that a pistol has, but getting hit in the torso with an arrow will kill you.

One of my friends grew up in Kelso and I use to go home with her during college breaks. I'm not surprised to read a story like this.

Reminds me of the group of swordfighters I did the swordfighting course with. Several of them were also gamers, and as they were leaving after a game they were addressed by the neighbour of the guy where they had been gaming: he had just come home and had seen a burglar in his house. So though of course they didn't have their swords with them, they are also all well trained in unarmed combat, and in strategy. So in no time one was on the roof of the shed, two at the backdoor, two at the front door, to intercept him if he came out before the police came. Which he did, and he was easily held by them. Lucky neighbour.

A bow is a deadly weapon - sure a gun is better, but if someone is shooting an arrow at you, unless something rather unusual is going on, he's trying to kill you.
Is is ok to try to kill a looter who's running away (ie, in on way shape or form a threat to you) from a neighbor's property?

Sure, I'm not saying bows aren't lethal. I'm just meaning in this case, the guy didn't die. Also, bows don't have the reload frequency, so the likelihood of dying from a single arrow wound, as opposed to multiple gunshot wounds, is less.

so it's attempted murder as opposed to murder.

Maybe he was trying to shoot him in the leg ?
Seriously, though, I know a guy who hunts bears with a bow. If one arrow can kill a bear, imagine what it can do to a man.

Under Texas law, people may use deadly force to protect their own property or to stop arson, burglary, robbery, theft or criminal mischief at night.

Texas law is very clear about dividing people into bad guys who need to be killed and good guys who are allowed to kill them.

But this happened in Kelso, Washington not Texas. What's the law in Washington?

RCW 9A.16.110: Defending against violent crime ? Reimbursement. (http://apps.leg.wa.gov/RCW/default.aspx?cite=9A.16.110)
(1) No person in the state shall be placed in legal jeopardy of any kind whatsoever for protecting by any reasonable means necessary, himself or herself, his or her family, or his or her real or personal property, or for coming to the aid of another who is in imminent danger of or the victim of assault, robbery, kidnapping, arson, burglary, rape, murder, or any other violent crime as defined in RCW 9.94A.030.
Now the question is, if the guy was running away from the property, is his neighbour in imminent danger of burglary? If the guy was running away carrying a TV then sure, but what if he had cash on him that he stole from the house?
One for the courts to decide, but I think the guy with the bow is probably in the clear.

Yeah, with an archer, you won't have a case like that shopkeeper who shot a robber, went in the street to see if he could shoot the robber's accomplice, then came back and emptied his clip on the wounded robber. (There was a thread about that some time back.)

The law is remarkably unclear here. What is "any reasonable means"?

And how does he manage to get close enough to the bear without his big brass balls knocking and making noise and alerting the bear?

Aw sweetite, we're just jealous becuase we only get to throw crocodile's at people under our law.
And they're heavy so after the mandatory training we only have a 20 meter range.

I don't have one. And my geekiness knows no bounds. My papers are intact but they take the form of large diplomas that require translation. That and 50 cents won't get me a cup of coffee!
Nonetheless, I'm planning on a trip to Gaspesie for my next holiday! Theoretically they will provide vinegar for the chips!
