just read an article about canada, and i got to thinking about our neighbor to the north (AKA america's hat). seems like of all the countries in the world i can readily think of, canada has the least to worry about. ample land, stable gov't, no territorial disagreements to speak of, no real burden from foreign engagements, + global warming and the recently opened northwest passage. seems an enviable position to be in.

how does it feel, canada?

no territorial disagreements to speak of

??:what:

You've heard of Quebec, no?

Also many of the reservations are still in dispute. Not to mention all the interests that are trying to build hydro electric damns to close to the reserves. The first nations peeps kinda get mad when their town is flooded.

To be technicially fair, Quebec is a province not a territory. ;)

We have our fair share of issues. They generally don't make international headlines.

NWT and Nunavut have more than their fare share of disputes I'm sure. The existence of Nunavut somewhat proves that.

133 canadian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan so far. Our political climate is degrading due to asshattery by the reform party.

133 is a frickin' trickle compared to the wars we've been in in the past. Every death is a tragedy, but really, let's put it in focus... 133 deaths since we marched in there in 2002. That's fucking amazing from a military loss standpoint.

We've also got Russia flexing in the north and eyeing our northern territories/waterways. The US made similar overtures at one point, under Bush. Less than thrilled with that. Relations seem better with Obama.

As ice recedes in the high latitudes and the northwest passage opens more regularly and allows greater shipping in the area, the push to insure that the waterways are declared to be international waters will only increase.

Spillage and messes, of course, will remain Canada's problem. Sorry, Nanook!

p.s., how's the softwood?

QFT.

It remains to be see in Canada can resist the pressure.... This would be the only way for them to ban dangerous ship for navigating the area. You don't want 35 years old tankers to navigate the arctic. Especially if they have been designed to navigate the warm sea... There will always be your lone iceberg looking for fun...

Something else Canada should be wary about climate change is pressure by the USA to "deregulate" the trade of water : lots of lake in Canada, lots of peoples in stupid american towns build in hot deserts (Las Vegas, Phoenix etc...). There has been related disputes between the two nations since at least the beginning of the 20th century, I foresee we will hear about it once again.

Relations seem better with Obama.

I really wonder why that is, though. I mean, Obama was firmly against free trade with us during his campaign and he's not done anything pro-Canada yet. Quite the opposite.

But people seem to be ignoring that.

It would be better if the Liberals were in power, though.

Yeah. Gotta say; that concerns me. Deeply. But at least under Obama there's a certain level of civil discourse, and flexibility that's been shown. I don't really think Obama's good for our nation, but he seems to be a stronger choice for the USA. I'm hoping that will pan out well for everybody involved, over time.

And yes, our own politics scare the shit out of me.

Harper seems to be walking a kind of tightrope regarding gay rights. On the one hand, he seems to want no part in the shitstorm he would get if he tried to, say, repeal gay marriage. On the other hand, a relatively small but significant portion of his base want exactly that.

Basically, he seems neutral on the subject. He'd rather it never come up because there is nothing to win for the conservatives, politically. It's a bit like native rights in a way.

Castro tried that, but it was waaaaay too expensive to support all those men. He deported them all to the US, hence the ubiquitous lisping cuban accent on gay stereotypes.

Life at minimum, execution is also possible. Also 3 years in prison for not reporting someone you think is gay and they will pursue extradition for Ugandans living abroad who are gay. Human rights catastrophe sums it up.

Still, good on Harper for speaking out against it. Other conservative leaders may have just kept quiet.

And to pay for it all they are introducing a harmonized sales tax (after the Olympics are over!!!) to pay for it. Most small business owners I know say that it's going to hit them pretty hard.

That bloody thing is a constant financial joke. It's huge, and since we don't have a baseball team anymore, it's only used for a few conventions, a few shows, and monster truck.

Some freinds and I were talking about South Park last night and how they poke fun at just about everyone. And we agreed that the worst thing you could do as a target of thier humor is to show outrage. Those guys love poking at things that squeek.

And it occured to me that early on in South Park (when I still watched it), and through the movie, they tried really hard to get a rise out of Canada.
Stone and Parker probably thought of it as a challenge; "Who would be hard to piss off enough to yell at us?" "Canadians!"

But I guess that while you can piss off Canadians individually it's much harder to piss them off as a group. Especially with humor, Canada seems to have a sense of humor about itself that is uncommon if not unheard of in the rest of the world.

So you go Canada. Keep that rep for being clean, polite and healthy.

I been meaning to ask you a couple of thing Bunny, what T.V. show/ movie are you doing now

Just finished four one after another. Seven Deadly Sins, a tv mini series about high school students behaving badly. Freshman Father, a tv movie about a single dad in his first year at Harvard based on a true story. Murder Among Friends, tv movie that is like a cross between Agatha Christie and Sex and the City. The latest one I got to be an assistant location manager on which was pretty cool. It's called Eaux Troubles de Crime and is a tv show that airs only in Quebec. It's all about true crime stories told through dramatic reinactments. It looks like a really good show. I wish they would do an English version. Now, I'm off 'til January and have been catching up on much needed sleep.

I stumbled upon a great interview with Gilda Radner and Lorne Michaels on the CBC website from the 1970s.
