A billboard that reaches out to those who don’t believe in God is being moved after threats to the owner of the land on which the billboard stands, the sponsoring group said Thursday.

The United Coalition of Reason paid $3,875 to place a billboard on 12th Street, one block south of Liberty Street in Over-the-Rhine Tuesday.

The billboard, facing southbound Interstate 71, reads: “Don’t believe in God? You’re not alone.” It lists the Cincinnati chapter’s web site.

The organization said it was informed Wednesday that the unidentified landowner had been threatened over the billboard.

“It proves our point, that bigotry against people who don’t believe in a god is still very real in America,” said Shawn Jeffers, co-coordinator for the Cincinnati Coalition of Reason. “Only when we atheists, agnostics and humanists come together and go public about our views will people have a chance to learn that we too are part of the community and deserve respect."

The billboard will be moved to the 6th Street viaduct (U. S. 50) in Queensgate, where it will face east and will be visible to traffic traveling west out of downtown.

Lamar Advertising owns the land that the Queensgate billboard sits on. It only leases the 12th Street billboard’s land.

The United Coalition of Reason has funded 14 campaigns around the country this year. Each has involved a billboard or public transit ads.

Jeffers said this is the first time the group has had to relocate a billboard.

I'm betting the threats didn't come from Muslims. ;)

If I lived in Ohio, I wouldn't believe in God either.

They wouldn't have threatened, they would have bombed the thing to pieces.

Also, what kind of "threat" could they give? "You won't go to heaven if you leave that billboard up!"

I think it's more like "we'll come to your house in the middle of the night and murder your family" sort of threats.

You know, the most christian of behaviour.

We have already established that there is no God in Ohio, so what ever this christian behavior you are speaking of does not exist there.

Props for that being one of the first Atheist billboards that isn't intentionally inflamatory that I've seen in a long time. I wish more Atheist activism was respectful.

Atheists shouldn't bow to the demands of domestic terrorists.

Ditto. Damned shame it got the response it did... but not terribly surprising. People who think that Christians aren't just as fucked-up as their counterparts in other faiths have their heads up their asses. People are people, regardless of where they're from. It's too damned easy for culture or circumstance to turn us into murderous monkeys. Every frickin' one of us.

I think that the landlord just didn't like the content and the 'threats' are fiction; an excuse for him to avoid any argument (I don't care, but you see I'm being threatened). Especially since he said for them to move it, 'or he would move it himself'. Seriously, who would go to the trouble of finding out who the land owner for a highway billboard are and threaten them instead of just threatening the people whose contact number is on said billboard? And why not call the police if you are being threatened? Sorry, not buying it.

You're talking about the same people who have made certain that no matter where you are in the country, even if you're in the middle of the woods and can't recieve anything else, you'll be able to tune into a Christian radio broadcast.

They have a population of people who are fanatic, have too much money and time on their hands, and genuinely in their heart of hearts think they're the army of God fighting off Satan's attempts to destroy the souls of humanity.

So no I don't think it's really that unlikely.

Ah I see I'm not the only one that gets angry about that....

And appearently they feel they are allowed to ignore laws about not bleeding over and covering up stations on other frequencies!

When my dial is turned to 92.7 talk radio I should not be able to hear ledgable bleed over from 89.5 Christian Rock

AFAIK, the only thing the FCC really enforces on signal bleed is in regards to emergency frequencies. They may be compelled to act if a station is so overpowered as to bleed into adjacent channel everywhere, all the time. But most often, it's just a factor of getting a better signal from the adjacent channel. Digital radio should help solve this.

I noticed that about radio - in the US there is always a rock station available where every band sounds like Nickelback. There is just some undefineable "suck" quality about the music that makes it truly awful.

Takes 10 minutes of listening before you realise that it's a bunch of botherers, and what they're singing about how cool Jesus is, and how cool it is to wear abstinence rings.

It's so rock.
