When I lived in Halifax, Annapolis Valley (or "the valley") was well known to have several "pure-bred" families. The term pure-bread developed because they had money and liked to keep it in the family.


Around here there isn't too much talk of inbreeding. I have heard from people who grew up on reserves, though, that marriages between first cousins was not uncommon on the reserves.

In Mass, some of the North and South shore communities have a bad rap, though they are not rural, for the large Italian or Irish familes that intermarry (within themselves, not between the two communities so much) and result in the entire town of Bridgewater (for example) being related, and all cops ;)
