From what I gather it's one of those things that's hard to explain, but easy to use and get into. And then you can't imagine not using it.

But in a nutshell it's a new way of communicating/collaborating over the internet. Like combining wikis with email with chatrooms with twittering with sharing files in one single strange, new creature.

From what I understand once somebody gets invited, they get 8 free invites. So even if DoM only shares one of his with other KTers, and that person shares just one of theirs, and so on, our whole community should be good. :)

DarwinOfMind

Actually from what I'm understanding Initial Google Invites recieve 8 invites.

I got one of those 2nd teir invites....

We've yet to see if it chains, I may or may not get invites.

Naturally if i do, some are going here, but additionally my coworkers have to get on, (because this is the ultimate collaboration tool!) and also my gaming group...

You know how they say a picture's worth a thousand words?

The video's an hour and a half long... it's worth approx 1 million words, I can't really explain it

I'll strip it down to "Email, Chat, IM, and Wiki's unholy lovechild" but that really doesn't do it, you gotta watch the video

I found this (http://danieltenner.com/posts/0012-google-wave.html) explanation on Google Wave very interesting and helpful.

Random Encounter
11-16-2009, 01:44 PM
I played around with it a little this weekend. And I had an actual live conversation yesterday, with one participant off line and 2 of us on.
With 2 or more people online it feels a lot like a really robust IM or chat-room, but different.
With people currently offline it feels a bit more like an Email or Forum post, but different.

I can see using it for things that require colaborative effort and/or require input from multiple people. For example it would make organizing a potluck trivial as people online or off could at any point pull up the wave to see an up to date list of who is coming and what everyone is bringing and edit the list to add thier own dish, which would also update anyone else viewing the wave now or in the future.

I'm thinking that once my gaming group has access that I'll be putting my character sheet in a wave. Then my GM (Hatter) can keep track of my stats and I can change the wave any time I spend exp or gain an item like new weapons or hearthstones. On Hatter's side he can either leave the wave in his inbox or set up a folder for gaming waves and only have it show in the inbox when I make changes. And if he changes anything on my sheet I will get it in my inbox as a changed wave.

Now I just need map and calendar apps for Exalted that I can insert in the wave and we could almost go paperless for our game. =)

I found this (http://danieltenner.com/posts/0012-google-wave.html) explanation on Google Wave very interesting and helpful.

That's a good explanation, but it also begs the question: why should I use it?

I don't do any kind of collaboration like this at work, so it becomes pointless to me.

I guess that's fine, I don't use 99.9999999999% of the software in the world. Why should this be any different?

Random Encounter
11-16-2009, 01:53 PM
I forgot to mention that there are a few things I wish it did that it either doesn't do or I couldn't figure out how to make it do.

After having a live conversation last night I wanted to clean up the wave for readability so that those who came along after wouldn't see the mess of embedded replies and questions that appear further down than their answers and such.

While you can delete any section of text no matter who wrote it, I can't find a way to move the sections around within the wave, especially annoying when someone hits reply on a text box someone else is currently typing in and the reply splits up their text inside the dialog box.

And while I like the "Copy to New Wave" option for a dialog box, it doesn't seem to move all the associated replies or even provide that option. I wanted to take a bunch of text later in the wave that was personal chat type stuff and move it to another wave rather than delete it outright for being off topic but it seems I would have to copy each section over individually before deleting them.

Now I think Google might like such feedback, so when I get home tonight I will be finding out how to submit this to them. I wonder if I can submit it as a wave and see what they do with the idea?

OK this is odd...

I invited my friend to google wave. He's posted here a small amount - as wckdtrb. His email address shows up briefly in my list of "invitees" and then vanishes.

Confused, I add wckdtrb@googlewave.com to my contacts list, to see if he already has an account. Bing! Lo and behold, there he is, complete with a picture of him in his distinctive hat.

So I add him to a couple waves... but he never says anything. So I called him up to ask if he ever checks his googlewave account.

He's totally confused. As far as he knows he doesn't have one. He tried logging in (using his gmail address) and it says he needs an invite to join google wave. I described the picture and he says that's his google account profile picture.

But if he doesn't have an actual google wave account, why can I add wckdtrb@googlewave.com to my waves?

This just hit my radar and ... wow. There's a lot of potential there. I mean, a lot. Of course, the people you need to collaborate with need to be using it to, but if they are? The possibilities for document and conversation evolution is pretty amazing and I'm surprised that I haven't really noticed this app yet.

I feel sooooooo out of the loop. I need to be more careful or my job is going to make me feel like someone who wakes up from a coma. You know, when I eventually am fired for snapping and stabbing everyone in the office with syringes. There are a thousand in a box you know. I could cause some mayhem before running out or being pulled down by the cops.

What can I do with it ?

It's like email, chat, and webforums all in one tool. It also allows multiple people to edit and share documents easily.

Right now I'm using it mostly to organize my gaming group. The first "post" of the wave has the next 3 games, times/dates, absences, and so forth. Anybody can edit/update it if they're not going to make it to game or whatever.

The weirdest part is that anybody who's a member of your conversation has complete authority to change anything that anybody else posts. While this is useful as a collaboration tool, I think individual posts need the option for "only editable by me" or "editable by anyone." While abuse is unlikely since you can always replay a history of the wave and see who is editing what, it's still odd for every member to have equal and total authority over the entire wave's contents.

The edited posts will also be marked as being written by e.g. "Bob and Andy", so that limits the abuse potential a bit as well. But yeah, a "lock post" feature would be good.

Google plans to drop Wave

Google is pulling the plug on Google Wave.

Google intended the messaging program, launched in 2009, to be a near-replacement for e-mail, which it said had grown tired.

But on Wednesday, the company announced that it is shuttering the project by the end of the year because it didn't have traction with consumers.

"Wave has not seen the user adoption we would have liked," Urs Hölzle, a Google senior vice president, writes on the company's official blog.

"We don't plan to continue developing Wave as a standalone product, but we will maintain the site at least through the end of the year and extend the technology for use in other Google projects."

The post does not say how many people signed up for or used Google Wave.

The code for some of Wave's innovative features -- like instant messages that were sent letter-by-letter as a person typed -- has been made available to the public and could be incorporated into future projects, Google says.

The service aimed to combine all elements of online communication -- instant messages, e-mail, Twitter feeds, etc. -- into a single "wave."

But from the start, Google says, engineers at the company were unsure how the product would be perceived by real Internet users.

"We were equally jazzed about Google Wave internally, even though we weren't quite sure how users would respond to this radically different kind of communication," the company's blog says.

Many people who tried Wave found the service to be complicated and confusing.

Google Wave was created by two Danish brothers, Jens and Lars Rasmussen, who also were the brains behind the more-successful Google Maps.

In interviews with CNN in 2009, the brothers said their goal with Wave was not only to create an outstanding product that would change the nature of online communication but to prove that innovation is still possible at a massive corporation like Google.

Their aim was to make Google Wave completely new -- and therefore risky.

"I do believe that you can achieve more if you're willing to take risks," Lars Rasmussen said at the time.

"There's almost a total correlation between the amount of risk you're willing to take and then the amount of stuff you then potentially can get done."

Wednesday's blog post from Google acknowledges their hard work and lauds them for making advancements in computer science.

"Wave has taught us a lot, and we are proud of the team for the ways in which they have pushed the boundaries of computer science," the post says.

"We are excited about what they will develop next as we continue to create innovations with the potential to advance technology and the wider Web."

Maybe next time, more people will use it.

Too bad, I actually like Wave. I use it mostly for communication with friends in two cases:

2. Posting links for the friend group.

Sure, I could use a blog or something instead, but I liked Wave's format.
