So what is everyone looking forward to at GenCon? I know that Witchhunter is supposed to debut (but I saw it at my FLGS today). Anything else that is coming out that people are interested in?

I really want the True20 DM screen.

Cool. Are you playing True 20?

I would never consider running a campaign using it. But for one shots, there's nothing better, IMO. It has enough similarity to D&D that everyone can figure out how to play it with little fuss, but it allows for more cinematic action.

I was going to use D20 Modern for my GenCon game this year, but it's just too complicated. There's a rule for every motherfucking thing. Your character can't pick at a hangnail without considering whether it's a free action or a move equivalent action. And don't get me started with talents, occupations, roles and advanced classes!

So yes, True20 is good for certain things, even though I'm not a fan of the death spiral at all.

I'm really looking forward to changeling, since I think it's the last piece I really need before following through on a threat I made a few years ago, after a night of drinking and dealing with larpers

I'm looking forward to serendipitously stumbling upon some new game in the dealer hall. Also to finding some cheap and cheesy old board games at the auction... I'll pay $1 for nearly anything.

What if it were a board game about pocket lint?

Last year or the year before, I bought a game called Plague!

So yea, pretty much anything. Though come to think of it, I might have paid $2 for that one. ;)

Do you guys regularly go to the auction?

Yup.

I'd love to go this year. Is it mostly junk or is there some neat stuff there?

Well, there's a lot of junk. They usually have collectibles and some of the better stuff grouped together in lots on Friday and Saturday nights.

This may be a dumb question but do they have gaming stuff?

Yea, they usually have quite a big of RPG stuff if that's what you mean. It can be anything from modules to rules books. Sometimes you can find some real gems in there, but there is a lot of junk too.

See, junk can be kind of fun. :)

I'm a Trollblooods player if anyone in the St. Louis area is interested. :)

At some point I would like to actually have a legitimate discussion about the reasonableness of 4e or when 4e might actually occur. If you believe the posts on ENWorld it is like some Doomsday Cult where it has been 'just around the corner' for the past 18 months.

Well, if you follow the pattern established so far, it would be released in 2011 (1e being "completed" in 1978 with the DMG, 2e released in 1989, and 3e in 2000). But I do think it will be sooner.

Basically, the stuff they make now is becoming more and more... I guess I would say esoteric. Complete Warrior, Divine, Arcane, and Adventurer were close to the core. Complete Mage, Scoundrel, and Champion less so. You also have things like Tome of Battle, Tome of Magic, and Magic of Incarnum, extending the system in weird ways. There are also a bunch of compilations being done: Spell Compendium and Magic Item Compendium are already out, and Rules Compendium is on its way.

Another indication is that I have seen lots of thought regarding adventure and monster design from WOTC folks lately, both on the website and in more official publications (e.g. Dungeonscape). That's an indicator that there are people there who are thinking a lot about these things.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see 4e coming out for GenCon 2008 or 2009. I think that when it does arrive, the changes will be more akin to the 1e/2e change than the 2e/3e one.

Since this is my first GenCon...I have no idea what to expect. I am looking forward to meeting people from the boards. I'll be the one stumbling through the dealers hall like a hick in the big city for the first time.

Nyrek, I promise you will have a great time. In fact, when you see the dealer's hall, you will say, 'self, this is awesome but I bet I could get 89% of this back home at my FLGS.'

But it is that other 11% which will be a real dream. Just keep an eye out for that sweet shit. ;)

I think 4e will come out when the RPG cash flow starts running real low. Seems to happen once a decade like clockwork! Maybe E. Gary will write it so he can do a forward which tells you all the versions he was not involved in are shit!:p

I'm just showing up for Saturday this year... Sadly, my finances and free time don't allow anything further at the moment. So, I'll see you folks there I hope! Oh, and naturally I'll be at dinner and then have my brain sucked out by an Indian. :D

Never been :(, every time I thought I had a chance to go something happened, from a damn deployment to a death in the family (on the road to Wisc. for that one). From what I understand from those thats gone, you need to pace yourself, but check out the art show (for nothing else but to drool), the chainmail bikini's (for nothing else but to drool), and the dealer show. Whats the seminares on this year ?

Well, with how clueless my character is, I fully expect to be eaten before all too long, daughter dearest.

Actually, Obryn, for as much entertainment as you are providing me, I would be tempted to have you live long after you should legitimately die just to hear you go on and on as that character. ;)

The best phrase I ever saw to describe it is "God's Own Game Shop"

but honestly, yeah, most of it you can and are probably better off getting from your FLGS. I do not have any "must have's" this year. Except for the Solomon Kane book from Savage Worlds, which I will hold off to get from my FLGS, Bruce will have it for sure.

Oh, I'm having a great time too, but I'll be shocked if I don't die a gruesome death.

Well, maybe. I kinda snapped at the end there, last year. :)

I hardly wanted to vocalize it before but often your FLGS offers deals and discounts. Also, the most important fact is you do not have to store it in your hotel room and transport it home. I would rather get art, t shirts or other unique things you can't get at the FLGS.

I usually get a Christmas/birthday gift for my gf. Last couple of years that was art of some sort. Not sure what I will do, I was actually debating getting her a magic wand from one of the accessory/costume guys there. Since I got her a sketch from Klaus last year, as an elven wizard, holding a wand, it will be a good thing to get her

Magic wand? Is that a fancy term for dildo?
