I am sitting in the living room and the television is on while I am
reading an article in a magazine. All of a sudden I hear Gaelic.
Gaelic being sung in a Caoine (Dirge). My eyes flicker towards the
screen to see the new Halo:ODST commercial cycle complete with the
speaking parts in something that sounds eastern European.

I gotta tell you, that form of music in that language got my total
attention which is quite an accomplishment considering my hard won
resilience to the charms of the almighty "Tube". Whomever chose that
clip for the background of the commercial was in my opinion an "effin'"
genius. That and here is some serious Heinlein nods being proffered
and I am delighted by them.

Indeed a well done commercial, in opinion as well.

Dr Paragon, are there any bands that you'd recommend that have a similar type of music to the dirge?

Celtic is its own genre, and fairly popular in certain crowds. :)

Try Loreena McKennitt (www.quinlanroad.com/), for starters. She has some good ones, and an amazing voice to boot.

Loreena McKennitt is good so is some of Enya's more esoteric stuff.
There was a ton of celtic music all over the place back in the 90's.
Most of it was was meh, but some was quite good.

I wouldn't call them Celtic, but they have a very interesting world music tribal style.

I agree on most of their stuff. They have a nice version of the Wind that Wakes the Barley (If I recall the title correctly)

on a side note - for some traditional Ukranian/Eastern European music - Milla Jovovich (yes the Resident Evil Milla) put out a CD our in the 90s that was pretty good and has some traditional songs on it.
