Hello

I've been reading the Malazan book of the fallen - I've finished bonehunters. I'm currently reading the return of the Crimson Guard and well... I find myself a bit confused.

Should I stop reading the books by Esslemont until I'm done with Erikson?

Thanks!

Actually, Esselmont's Night of Knives is a prelude of sorts. You could read that one first. I thought Crimson Guard was around the House of Chains time or so....

What's Wikipedia say?

Here's a rough timeline. I believe it's correct (I got it from another site) since the authors aren't very forthcoming with times:

* Night of Knives (1154)
* Midnight Tides (uncertain, but possibly two years before Gardens of the Moon, c. 1161)
* Gardens of the Moon (1163)
* Deadhouse Gates and Memories of Ice (1163-64, these two novels occur simultaneously)
* House of Chains (1164, with a lengthy prologue section that takes place some years earlier)
* The Bonehunters (1164-65)
* Return of the Crimson Guard (c. 1165, just after The Bonehunters)
* Reaper's Gale (c. 1165 or 1166)
* Toll the Hounds (by internal evidence, c. 1169-70, but this conflicts with dates in other books)

I've read them from Gardens to Reaper's Gale, Then Night, then Crimson Guard, then Toll the Hounds. Esslemont and Erikson have very different styles.

Toll the Hounds was the first one I really had a hard time getting through the first half.

I'm surprised you didn't mention Buecalain and Korbel Broach on there.

They just put out all those stories in one $15 USD omnibus.

So you mean we don't have to pay $225 for the book anymore ? Sweet ! :win:

Edit: I tried finding it on amazon.ca but no dice. There seems to be a third book of their adventures ($17 for 120 pages :rolleyes:) and a fourth one coming out in december.

Agreed on both points. I've really like the Mazalan series, but the last one was too inflated and really needed to be paired down. Still, there was good stuff in it.

I liked Night of Knives and haven't had a chance to read Crimson yet.

Yeah, ditto. I think the problem was that it was mostly about characters I hadn't seen for a few books, and didn't care so much about.

spoilers ahead about the return of the crimson guard

I have 2 questions off the top of my head:

1: who killed Laseen? It was very... anticlimactic.
1a: Is she dead or will she now too ascend? If she's been killing avowed left and right...

2: The Wickans didn't kill Mallick Rell when they had the chance? that is total BS! :rolleyes:

I think it was Taya? Rel's young assassin aquaintance. I can't remember actually. I figure we'll see her again.

Thanks ! I managed to find it at amazon.ca with the ISBN number. It wasn't attributed to any author so my search for Erikson had not found it, it seems.

They don't have it in stock, but I added it to my wish list so when they get it, I'll be able to order.

It also includes the $17 3rd book I mentioned earlier. Go figure.

So I finished Toll the Hounds. Yes, definitely got too ... wordy and artsy ... for its own good. Kallor is becoming more interesting as a character I have to say...

I'm a bit confused now.

1: what made the moon explode?

2: Who or what made Spite and Envy retreat?
