Has anyone else seen this? I watched it the other night and I really liked it. I had a feeling that I would like it since Guillermo del Toro was one of the creative minds behind this movie. The ending was chilling but also calming which really surprised me. I totally recommend this movie. If you don't speak Spanish then you'll have to suffer through subtitles but even so it's still worth watching.

Plot Summary for
El orfanato (2007)

Laura decides to reopen an orphanage for handicapped children in the location and during the opening party, Simón calls her to show the little cabin of his friend Tomás. The busy Laura does not gives much attention to her son; then she sees a mysterious masked boy and Simón vanishes. Speak not so well. Understand the spoken word, excelente! I grew up in a small farming town with lots of Hispanic immigrant workers. Some of my first boyfriends were Hispanic. I took 3 yrs of Spanish and now Dora the explorer makes sure I retain a lot of it. :heh: I'm teaching my kids the basics. I'd love to teach them German next but I need to brush up on that. That was the first language I spoke as a child but when I turned 3 my mom stopped speaking to us in it and sadly I've forgotten nearly all of it.

And now you all know just a little bit more about me.

Well, if you really want to bring your kids up to speed, I guess you should teach them cantonese and arabic too.

I saw it. :)

I thought it was pretty good, though not quite as utterly awesome as I had been led to believe.

I'll leave that up to Singularity. He's far more educated in that area.

I had no previous knowledge of how good or bad this movie was. I didn't even read the preview on the back of the dvd case. I just popped it in and watched. Maybe it touched me a little deeper because the whole mother connection grabbed onto me and wouldn't let go.

I watched it in the cinema when it first came out so it's a little grey in my memory, although I recall it was a good film, still I have the DVD (present from a friend) so I think I'll watch it again before I comment.

If you liked it, you should see The Devils Backbone by Guillermo del Toro as well. Made a few years back. Awesome.

But then they'd never get to wear this T-shirt (http://bit.ly/arabi)...

Cantonese, Hindi, and Portugese actually. The top 3 growing economies are China, India, and Brazil. Asia in particular is poised to rush past the US in terms of "superpower"ness, if we keep faltering and they keep growing.

Seconded. GDT's Spanish-language films are very, very good - and Devil's Backbone was really my introduction to him..

Bah, they all also speak english. If you have a boy, you should teach him french. In the US, that will definitely get him laid.

BTW, you should learn Mandarin, not Cantonese. ;)

My son has a really cool super power so teaching him French won't be necessary.
