View Full Version : New version of D20 Modern ?
Seen this both here and at ENWorld, but do y'all thing that a new version of D20 Modern (and Furture) will be released useing the SAGA rules (which I've never seen) ? What's better, worst of it compared to the Modern rules. What needs to be changed to fit a present day campaign.

I seriously doubt it. It's been the red headed step child for awhile, and there haven't been any new products since, what, last September? Almost a year. D20 Modern's dead I'm afraid.
And if the original didn't do as well as they'd hoped I don't think they'll try again. Unfortunately.

Rob Heinsoo in one of the Gamer0 interview videos, indicated that there had been some game mechanics they'd come up with that were very cool but which didn't really fit D&D. Further, he hinted that there would be games - or at least, adjuncts to D&D - in which those mechanics would be used. For some reason, this set my Spidey-sense tingling. My first thought was a more modern or futuristic game. That's based on nothing but a half-assed hunch based on a vague statement by a D&D designer. But I'm wonderin' what other kind of game they might come up with, one that (presumably) wouldn't directly compete with or overlap D&D, but which might share the same mechanics.

Well, if they do bring out a new edition, I for one, will be greatly interested and would probably purchase it within the first week or so.

My understanding is they cut a lot of products from the D20modern line since it was not selling well. Especially all that spy stuff. Besides Top Secret, spy games have had a brutal track record.

But why? Spy genere games are set up for gaming. The only problem with spy games is that they tend to work better with small groups 3 - 4 people. Remember, James Bond's friends either die or get fucked (literally) by Bond (or both).

I think it is too bad because I think the spy genre has been largely untapped in the RPG industry. But like you say it does not work well with larger groups. Mission Impossible is a great example of a spy group but it would be hard to recreate that in a roleplaying game. It would be very choppy during game play.

Correct. Bond type villains are made for spy games but whenever I ran spy games years ago, I would have the villain enter the room and . . .
Dr. Medici: Good evening, International Players, as you can see, my plan is just about ready to come to -
Player 1: I shoot the fucker!
Me: Wait! Wait! He is delivering an evil speech and-
Player 2: Shoot the fucker! Shoot the fucker!
Player 3: I break out the cheese grater!*
*This group actually had a cheese grater to disfigure my villains. :(

This is what the "Evil Diatribe" feat is for :)
Doesn't Cinematic Unisystem have a feature where the players get a Drama Point each if they wait for the Villain to finish monologuing - or is that wishful thinking?
Have no idea, with all the small companies doing Modern off-shoots you would thing WoTC would at least try to put stuff out.

I think WoTC is trying to show more business savvy. With the open licence and computer gaming, I think they have to be real selective on launching new games.
