I've been there. The building looks nearly identical to the Temescal library. Their sci-fi selection is pretty bland and it was incredibly loud. My favorite bay area library is the Union City library. Good selection, nice quite loft to kick back and read.

The Temescal library is a Tudor revival structure and while it has a similarly bifurcated layout (two unequal reading rooms--w/one for children), perhaps because it has an Eastern orientation, it's always seemed rather dark in there, as well as more cluttered. I go to these libraries for the music. Oakland has some odd, hard to find cds, but nothing like the Berkeley main library. If I lived near the GG branch, I could see going there to work/read and popping into that biker place across the street for a coffee. It's an interesting neighborhood, and there's even a branch of the commie pizza cooperative on S. Pablo not far from there. The GG branch has a chess club for young people and some interesting/intelligent librarians. It's west of where I live by about a mile, so I don't go all that often.

They also have specialized ethnic collections: Temescal has Ethiopian and Eritrean music and GG has a huge collection of Bollywood films and Indian music.

I found this GooGoo Dolls cd at the local Berkeley branch. As I'd never before heard of the band, it was a pleasant surprise:

I was listening to quite a few things from that group the other night. As one of the videos has this comment "I swear to god, the blonde one is a fuckin' pixie princess." It cracked me up as it seemed to fit so well.

That aside, I made the observation the series of videos this song is part of seemed to be all one performance which lasted from night till dawn. Pretty amazing if I do say so.
