Atropine Mama
06-10-2009, 12:21 AM
...courtesy of a left temporal lobe seizure. He had it this evening and was in care of wonderful ER staff a few minutes after starting to seize, he'd had pain, stumbling, confusion, and other symptoms that prompted the trip to the ER and luckily we were already on our way when it really hit.
He has been admitted, already had a CT scan, tomorrow will have MRI and EKG, among other tests, and is already feeling well enough to be petulant about me confiscating his cigarettes (non smoking campus, baby). Doc hasn't really ruled out a stroke but if it was one, it was minor. Will know more tomorrow.
He has had these seizures before, but not for about 15 years. Usually there's a trigger event, like change in sleeping/eating habits, stress event, etc. but we can't think of one. This is so fucking out of the blue.
Thank the gods my "chosen mama" was here, she is staying here for several days anyway and pretty much deserves sainthood.
Keep him in your thoughts and prayers if you would. Thanks, guys. I do truly love you folks. And not just because I'm up way past my bedtime. :)

damn, seizures suck. I hope this isn't a reoccuring trigger, and that it's a one-time freak thing.

You're both in my prayers. I'm glad you already had him on the way to the ER when it happened, and I appreciate you actually finding the time to keep us informed. Thank you, Bella. Good luck, and keep us informed when you can (but don't let that become another stress, too). Remember, online or not, people here can, if necessary, be another form of support. Don't be afraid to ask.
I'd post comments regarding Deathe's temporal lobe, but I'll wait until he's well and back here to read them himself. ;)

What happens to you if you have a temporal lobe seizure? I have no idea.
Neither did I, so I looked it up on a medical site:
This type of seizure arises from abnormal electrical activity in the temporal lobe on one or both sides of the brain.
A seizure is an episode of abnormal electrical activity in the brain that can cause loss of, or reduced, consciousness; involuntary movements; and unusual sensations. When the electrical activity starts in the temporal lobe, it produces a temporal lobe seizure.
The early warning symptoms (called an aura) of a seizure are caused by the beginning of the seizure in a small part of the temporal lobe. The aura may stop on its own, or go on to spread, producing altered awareness. The aura, also called a "simple partial seizure," can include:
* Epigastric sensations ("a funny feeling in my gut," "stomach rising")
* Hallucinations or illusions (vision, smells, tastes, or other sensory illusions)
* Sensation of deja vu, recalled emotions or memories
* Sudden, intense emotion not related to anything occurring at the time (similar to a panic attack)
If the electrical activity spreads and consciousness is altered or memory is lost, the seizure is called "complex partial." During this part of the seizure, the following may occur:
* Abnormal sensations, including:
o Numbness, tingling, crawling sensation
o Occurring in only one part of the body or spreading
o Preceding motor symptoms
o Sensory hallucinations (visual, hearing, touch, etc.)
* Autonomic (automatic) Nervous System symptoms may include:
o Abdominal pain or discomfort
o Dilated pupils (eyes)
o Flushed face
o Nausea
o Rapid heart rate/pulse
o Sweating
* Changes in movement, including:
o Abnormal mouth behaviors
+ Chewing or swallowing without cause
+ Lip smacking
+ Profuse salivation ("slobbering")
o Abnormal head movements, including:
+ Forced turning of the head
+ Forced turning of the eyes
+ Usually in the direction opposite of the location of the brain lesion
o Repetitive movements, such as picking at clothing
o Rhythmic muscle contraction and relaxation (rare) -- affecting one side of the body, one arm, leg, part of face, or other isolated area
* Consciousness is reduced or lost during the seizure
* Consciousness may be maintained, but memory lost (partly or completely)
* Other symptoms can include:
o Changes in vision, speech, thought, awareness, personality
o Loss of memory (amnesia) regarding events around the seizure (partial complex seizure)

Found the specifics and it isn't really lost it is just a six month timer that if I have kill anybody while driving because of a seizure that is automatic manslaughter.

I have a hole between two chambers so blood and potentially clots can move between the two. Normally clots form lungs filter them out a hole lets clots go straight to the brain. It is pretty normal heart defect and no big deal but in CYA fashion I have to have it checked out more thoroughly.

Topamax.
Careful that guy will feel you up if you don't watch him.
:D
I had a complex partial seizure moving into a generalized myoclonic seizure. I was literally a few minutes from getting emergency brain surgery when I started coming out of it. They tell me they had to call the neurosurgeon to go back home. Until that point they feared it was a stroke.
Lots of battery of tests latter. They confirmed that my existing brain damage is still there.
New things they discovered.
I have micro-vascular scarring in the brain. Slight concern most likely cause is regular headaches.
I have a holey heart. Little concern but in CYA fashion I have to go have it checked out further.
Neurologist is pretty confident that is it is complex partial seizures

Petitie mal moving into grand mal, but not tonic-clonic (classic grand mal).
Petite mal and grand mal aren't really used by doctor's anymore because they aren't exact enough.

They tell me about a month until the topamax starts working. The auras/simple are 5-10 an hour. The complex are 1-2 an hour. No generalized since the one on Tuesday.

In the grand scheme that's good to hear; I hope things improve. Do you know why they chose Topamax? I know any med change takes extended periods of time; though I know Keppra is taken into the system rather quickly(I can feel lvl shifts w/in hrs). What meds have you been on before? Take care hun.
