View Full Version : Post a pic of your city's skyline

MSN.com had a "most breathtaking skylines" article today, and it got me to thinking that most cities and towns often have pretty spiff skylines even if they aren't as breathtaking as Manhattan's.

So post a pic of your city's skyline. Don't feel the need to say which city if you don't want to.

I'm including a stand alone shot of our Legislative buildings because they are rather beautiful and impressive. The only reason Victoria is the capital of BC instead of Vancouver is that we had enough in the treasury to build them before Van got its big boom in the 1800s, and the government decided that it would be too expensive to move the buildings to Vancouver.

The Victoria BC skyline in relation to the inner harbour:

1st faces south toward the Legislatvie buildings
2nd faces East toward the city from the harbour
3rd faces West toward the harbour (taken from one of my favourite restaurants on the 18th floor of the Chateau Victoria House)

Man, that was a surprisingly difficult web search. Not many good photos of my city's skyline, and I've always thought we had a great one.

Memphis.

This is just stupid. I was going to make fun of Doc, and Googled "Pine Buff Skyline" and came up with a decent Memphis pic on the first page. This is what it looks like from I-40 heading into town, which is why it looks like a shot of a northern city - just concrete without any sense of surroundings:

I took this picture on my first energy audit. It's from south of Market St. in San Francisco. You can make out the peak of the Trans America building and Fox Tower.

That's a cool view of the city that isn't shown often in media. Thanks for posting it.

Before the railway broke through the Rockies, Victoria and San Francisco were sister cities. There's pieces of San Francisco all over downtown Victoria. If the big earth quake hadn't happened, there would still be a lot of Victoria in downtown San Francisco.

I usually see this from the other side on my daily walks at the marina in Berkeley. It's often shrouded in fog, but on the days when it's visible, it's truly stunning. I just drove across it for the first time since I've been here a couple weeks ago. It's really the most beautiful man made structure in San Francisco. http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/2/22/Golden_Gate_Panorama.jpg/800px-Golden_Gate_Panorama.jpg

This is what passes for a skyline in these parts:

BTW, Shiningbrow, do you think you could reduce the size of that picture? It's nice and all, but it stretches the screen making the thread hard to read.

Nearest city is Liverpool, who's skyline has changed dramatically in the last year or so due to being Capital of Culture 2008.
The tall modern buildings on the left were all built in in 2007. You can see the floating ferry terminal running along the water line
in the middle of the picture, to the far right is the Albert Dock and left of that the Anglican Cathedral (you don't really get a sense
of it's scale as it is actually far back from the shore), it is the 5th largest Cathedral in the world. Continue along and just
right of centre is the Liver building, with the clocks facing out to the river, behind that is the St. Johns Beacon
which use to have a revolving restaurant but now just holds Radio City.

I don't know how. I just found an image and pasted the code. If you have any ideas as to how I can shrink it, I'll be happy to. Sorry about the effects on the thread, I had no idea it would do that. I can rummage around and find another one to replace it when I'm awake.

The Swedes are a god fearin' folk

Used to be when those were built, at least.

Cat, they are pretty big. No optical illusion involved. The one to the left, Klara kyrka, is 116 meters tall and built on a hill. Stockholm City generally doesn't allow buildings to be built very tall, so a church like that stands out a lot.

The thing in the middle isn't a church, it's the town hall where the Nobel Prize dinner and award ceremony is held.

I'm currently between places i would call "home".

The place i lived the past 10 years (Boston):

http://www.blisstree.com/flyawaycafe/files/2007/07/downtown-boston-skyline.jpg

The side of the river i actually lived on (Cambridge/Somerville):

http://www.international-lisp-conference.org/2009/images/Cambridge_Skyline.jpghttp://www.neilvandyke.org/weblog/somerville-20020402.jpghttp://farm4.static.flickr.com/3017/2329174615_d5c2fb05a3.jpg?v=0

Where i moved last October (Schenectady, NY):

This is where i grew up, the closest thing to home i have right now. There is no real "skyline" there being no building higher than 4 or so stories.

This is a photo i took last summer while visiting, looking down over the town from the bluff that used to be the old lake bed:

Atticus is currently sitting in an office around 2km from me and about 60 stories higher than me. :D

He's really busy these days. He lectures part time and is busy doing lawyerly stuff. Plus I'm a greedy and demanding wench so when he does have free time I want him to spend it with me not on the web. All of which adds up to the fact that I don't think he has time to visit anymore. It don't think he ever made a deliberate decision it just happened. I'll let him know you were thinking of him and should pop around and say hi.
