The contractor's guy just called me to say when my condo would be ready. I have an appointment with the notary on june 5th to sign the acquisition contract and get my house keys !
:happybounce:
I actually signed the pre-acquisition contract on this deal on april 5th last year, so it's been a pretty damn long wait, let me tell you. I can see the end of the tunnel now.
:jump:
(House warming party will be in july, if anyone wants to drive up. )

Congrats buddy, I'm glad for you!
As an aside, I doubt I'll make it friday... it'll basically be my only night off this week and I need to rest at some point.
Sorry... :(

Nice!
I don't know about Canada, but there are an awful lot of really cheap houses in the US right now. It's a buyer's market for those with good credit and capital.

Congratulations, amigo! That's awesome! I hope it works out wonderfully for you. :)
Now I want to send you one of my old Ruger P89s as a house warming gift. You can attach a holster right next to your door frame just to see the look on peoples' faces when they come over and see you take your hand off the weapon attached to the door frame as you identify them as non-threats. ;)

Er, it's a huge construction project (64 condos in the building), so we are not allowed on site to take pictures of the place as work progresses.
I did get to visit it for the first time (and last time until the final inspection in late may) and of course, there were some pictures taken then. I'll post some of them in my next post, but they represent a work in progress.
Congrats buddy, I'm glad for you!
Thanks !

I understand. I'll find some way you can make it up to me, I'm sure. ;)
BTW, if I can find some people to go with, I'll probably go see your show on saturday night.

I'm a bank's wet dream. Unfortunately, the housing market has not crashed here. The economic crisis has meant that house prices did not go up 10% this year in Montreal. Ten years ago, houses were literally half the price they are now. My small condo will be worth about twice what my parents full sized house (in a remote region) is worth. It's very expensive. :(

That's very illegal (for many different reasons), dude. But I appreciate the sentiment. :)

Of course I am. This year, comparable condos cost 10k$ more.

I've about made up my mind that it's time for me to get into my own house. I'm finally getting weary of apartment living.
Write up a tutorial a goob like my can understand of how you did it!

Here are the pictures.
Be warned that the place is still a work in progress at this point. Also, it's not going to look impressive to someone who lives in their own house. It's only a small condo (a little less than 1000 square feet) meant for 1 person (or a couple in a pinch).
But it'll be bigger than my current, new (instead of old and decrepit) and, most importantly, mine. Oh, and it comes with an interior parking spot. :D
Here we go.
Floor plan. This is the basic floor plan. My unit has been modified slightly (the door between the bedroom and office has been removed to make way for a larger closet and to add a closet in the office (I'll mostly be using the office as a guest bedroom).

Kitchen. Without being huge, it's actually a bit bigger than the picture makes it out to be.
http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u137/Freedom_Canadian/IMG_0458.jpg
Main room as seen from the kitchen. Also a bit bigger than it looks on the pic. It's actually 23 feet long. The patio door is huge.

Same room, but looking at it from the opposite end, towards the kitchen.

View of building in front through the (very dirty at this point) patio door. It gives a hint as to the future look of the exterior of my building since the building in front is a similar project by the same contractor. There will be a balcony there, eventually.

Bathroom. It's strangely framed since I mostly wanted pics to reference colors later (I still have to choose what colors I'll put on the walls).

I won't bore you with the office and bedroom pics. They are just square white rooms so far. :)
In late june, I'll have pics with the walls painted and then with furniture. Those should be cooler. :D

I'm an atypical case, so you shouldn't base yourself on my experience.
In my case, it was:
1) Decide I wanted to buy a property.
2) Because I'm single and a full house is too much maintenance for 1 person, decide on a condo in town instead of a house in the suburbs (about the same price). (I also hate long commutes.)
3) Since I knew someone who bought a condo with that company and was happy with his purchase, and as all that happened the company in question had just opened sales on a new project (it takes them about 3 weeks to sell off a 64 unit building like mine because of low prices), I went to see the sales rep.
4) Because that contractor has special rules (they won't sell you a condo unless you get a home loan with a particular bank and you have to use their notary), pretty much all the hard decisions about home buying were already made in my case and I didn't even really shop around except to insure that I was paying a fair price.
You'd be better off asking someone who recently bought a house fair and square, like Trainz.

Looks nice. Like you said it is a good size for a single person or even a couple. I can not wait to see the finished product.

It's actually dark brown.

Laveuse/sécheuse. Schizm is right.

He's in construction so he's scum. ;) Of course, he would cut corner, but this one actually has low prices to match his cutting corners. :D
Plus, they have relatively few complaints in their file.
And the condo comes with a 3 year warranty.

Can't remember where it was Chicago maybe, but the construction was so poorly done that the tenets had a waterfall in thier living room from upstairs when it rained
