I had an interview with two folks who have some pretty ambitious projects. They're looking for a fast, competent editor to help them out with two different films.

One is a three minute short for the Santa Fe New Mexican's 3 Minute Film Fest. Obviously, it would be completed first and on a pretty fast schedule.

The other is a feature length narrative shot using a 4K color RED cam. RED CAM! I'm drooling already. That thing looks like it will be all kinds of fun to work with! 4K color is higher quality than you can get with actual film, so the footage can potentially be super-rich and have all kinds of amazing depth. I really, really hope I get the job!

I'm actually pretty confident. We had a nice introduction and I like the producers, and I feel that I gave a pretty good accounting of myself. They asked me a couple technical questions which I fielded reasonably well-- how do you do variable speed time remapping in Final Cut Pro, and can you do it in Motion? Oddly enough, I knew the process of setting a project up for it but I forgot how to access the time remap tool directly. (I remembered later- sss key access the keyboard shortcut, or you can pick time remap directly from the slip button bar in the tool panel.)

They could tell I knew how to do it, though, because their follow up questions were all about technical process and window layout in Final Cut. FINALLY! I feel like those classes I've been taking weren't just me chasing a dream. My technical knowledge is far greater than my body of work, but it may just pan out for me this time. I've actually done a reasonable amount of editing, enough to legitimately market myself as a beginning editor and not a trainee.

For the curious, some of my work is here:

and here:

I've done some other work for people, but I'm not able to post it.

I don't know if I'm going to get this job or not, but I feel like I'm finally getting somewhere. I've gotten pretty torn up about my prospects in this industry in the past, and the whole market crash hasn't helped anything. A little positive response goes a long way towards restoring my confidence.

Oh, and the first link? You can go to the Duke City Shootout website and check out all the films in the festival. Vote on your favorite! My personal fave from last year was Assassin Emeritus (http://dukecityshootout.org/Assassins_DCS_Final-H.264_300Kbps_Streaming_DCS_2008.mov), but you can decide for yourself.

Given the complete shitweasel of a cuntrag who gripped on that production you linked radu, it's not bad.

Don't blame the movie! It's still a great short.

Good luck! It's all good industry experience.

I'm still not sure what a Best Boy does.

But if it all goes to pot, you probably also qualify for that, if it's what I think it is.

Update: I got the job and the film is going GREAT!

:happybounce:

I'm so pleased. I got the job editing and I really like the project and more importantly I like the people I'm working with. The film is coming along nicely. Sorry for the terseness of this post, but I'm kind of pressed for time and I don't want to drop too much because a website is coming along soon that'll have all the goodies.

I love my (not very well paying) job. That parenthetical condition can't last TOO long...

What other job can you spend around 40 of the last 72 hours working on and still feel excited about?

sweet. my evil plan for world domination is coming to fruition.

step 1: watch radu become a film industry insider
step 2: ride his coat tails to fame and fortune.
step 3: profit!

HAH! I've got a step 2! HAHAHA!

[blacksploitation voice] BAM SUCKA! [/blacksploitation voice]

The film is called "Bailout" and it is phenomenal. Without a doubt my best work to date. It comes in at precisely 3:00:00 runtime ---- EXACTLY the festival limit. The sound design is really good, considering I essentially taught myself how to do it as the project unfolded.

There are several shots in the film which we actually didn't even shoot! I had to composite them together from different clips in Motion. Plus, there's a bit of time stretch/remapping, smoothing, and general shot cleanup work I did.

More to come later.
