My wife thinks it's a hoax. I looked around for a few minutes, couldn't find any information either way.

My wife thinks it's a hoax. I looked around for a few minutes, couldn't find any information either way.I can't help but feel the same. I suppose it's because I've never seen results so realistic from something that's been 90% airbrushed. If it is not a hoax, that man has amazing skill. He even managed to create the blurred effect on the front earring. Crazy!

What bothers me is that I know that there are several artists out there who use Corel's brilliant Painter program to take digital photos, layer some brush strokes over them, and sell them as paintings. There's a tutorial on how to take photos and turn them into gorgeous oil paintings, and it shows an 'artist' doing exactly that, printing it out on a giant canvas, and hanging it for an art show to sell.
This guy sounds like the real deal, but anybody can talk. I love what technology now allows me to do with digital painting, but hate how it casts easy suspicion on all works of art. I found the idea of using pencil and eraser to create texture on an airbrushed base to be brilliant in its simplicity.

I was going to say that it does not look like it could be a painting. I think for me to actually believe it was a painting I would have to see some of the painting being done. It is just too perfect.

On closer examination there's a couple areas where the skintone transition is too smooth, and hints of the fade edge of the airbrush blast show through... but they're damned subtle and you have to really look to find them. If it's a fake, he went through an awful lot of trouble to fake it.

I'm with your wife on this one. I had my hubby look at it -- he used to do a lot of painting -- and he thinks it's BS, too. He points out the fact that the "finished product" even still has micro acne showing, and such.
I'm afraid I just can't buy it. It's got to be a photo.

Hew is real, the product is real. Some of his students work will blow the top of your skull off. His will leave just a wet spot where you were standing.

St. Louis Art museum has a huge painting of this:
http://www.framemuseums.org/images/photos/1004/img_1146761284142.jpg
This painting is at least 10 feet by 10 feet tall. The picture doesn't do it real justice but it looks like a giant photo. The pours and little hairs and such are all painted in. Very cool. Chuck Close - Keith 1970

when i was in college,in an art appreciation course, we did a series on what was called "photorealism" : it was boggling to me how very, very real the paintings looked---i specifically remember some classic car paintings that just gleamed---and some real unatractive ones of a large, older woman.
i dont know this particular artist--but i know ive seen it done before.
(since i learned abt in back in college, i would assume that the techniques can only have improved in the last hundred or so years.)

Our last project in High School Fine Arts (those many years ago) was always a Photorealism piece. I hated it but had good results my senoir year with a landscape picture of moving water.
The problem I have with this 'painting' is that generally you start with the background and move to the foreground. It his shots showing some of the steps, he did not do this though I do see he used something to cover it up. You work dark to light generally as well.
Honestly, I've have to see the painting 'in the flesh' to render any firm judgment.

My first inclination is to call bullshit. My second, however, is jaw-agape awe. Having spent more time working either as an the impressionist or in charcoal, I can't even comprehend how to make something look that realistic.

Ken Danby's a local photo-realist who has focused on vignettes of Canadian life -- so, yeah, he's done a bunch of hockey paintings. Used to have one of his limited run prints in our home when I was a kid. I was in complete awe of his work.
Edit: http://www.kendanbyart.com/
In fact, it's the image to the right of the page. A work called "at the crease". https://store.kendanbyart.com/ for a larger version.

we have one of his works i think in the Art Institute of Chicago. tis massive, and yes indeed looks just like a photo if approached from a distance.
