This according to Whirligig at Circvs Maximvs:

It is with unimaginable sadness that I post this.

ngri, or John Wright ( J-Right to his friends), passed away today.

He had surgery on Tuesday for a pinched nerve in his neck which had been causing him a great deal of pain and loss of movement for the last three months. Keeper of Secrets talked to him last night and he was home and doing well. Today, it seems he developed a blood clot in his lung and died in route to the hospital.

Right now, the shock is really preventing me from posting the depth of my thoughts on this. When I'm better able, I'll post some of John's exploits at the last 4 GenCons. He had a great sense of humor and was amazing at trivia, and loved reading CM.

As a remembrance, I post John's favorite quote:

"I have wrestled with reality almost all my life and I'm proud to say that I finally won."

I didn't know him well, but he was always a part of these forums and this saddens me terribly. :(

Is this the user formerly Dr. NRG? :(

I am almost completely certain that no, they aren't the same person. I could swear I've seen Dr. NRG say something about this in the past. But I'll bet he's getting some emails.

NGRI has joined about every incarnation of NTL and Kay's I've been on. He's posted here, and his posts seem rather poignant now. :(

No.

I can't claim I really knew the guy at all, but I remember he explained his username was an in-joke that meant "Not Guilty, Reason: Insanity". If it vaguely looks like NRG, it's just a coincidence.

Well, this is sad.

Yes.

And I met him twice more at Gen Con after that.

He was cool. :(

Whirly and Keeper, IIRC, he has been playing with you for close to a decade... you have my sympathies.

John had indeed been a fixture in Keeper and Whirli's gaming group. He had also been a co-worker.

The call I got telling me he had passed was a shock.

He'll be missed.

I never had the pleasure of knowing him on a personal level as some of you did, but he was a gamer, so while I don't have the words myself, I can but offer the words of one wiser then myself. I believe it was Jolly Blackburn that wrote the following as a part of KodT, but after several requests from readers as people passed, he reprinted it and posted it (http://www.kenzerco.com/Operiodicals/kodt/nemptychair.php) to the KenzerCo site.

The Empty Chair
Eulogy for a Gamer

There is an empty chair,
at the table this day.
A hallowed place where,
a friend once played.
The roll of his dice,
my ears long to hear.
Or perhaps it would suffice,
if he should suddenly appear.
With character sheet in hand,
and a bag of Cheeze-doodles to share.
All his friends would stand,
as he sat in the empty chair.
I hear his voice a-callin’,
and it ties my heart in a knot.
For he cries, “Though a comrade has fallen,
You must play for those who cannot.”
We conquered worlds on the run,
he and I in the name of fun.
And as others may come and go,
I make both both friend and foe.
But what I long for most,
is our past now long a ghost.

How terribly awful the passing of someone before his time. I didn't know him that much at all, though I remember seeing his posts occasionally. But it sounds like he was a pretty nice guy.

I will pray for him now and silently toast my next beer to his memory.

I had the pleasure of getting to know John because of Whirli and Keeper. It is very sad news. And was a complete shock. He will be missed a great deal.

This reminds me of Jamie Haley's death when I was in college. He'd just graduated and went to some school in New York for his graduate program on full scholarship. He was as full of life as anyone I've ever known. He choked to death on an apple, age 23.

My condolences to the family on this most unexpected loss. Such losses are among the hardest to bear because they catch us all utterly unprepared for them.

I searched for the past half hour, but I can't find it. Before I moved 2 years ago, it was behind the daycon glass on a shelf, but with the move...

Dammit.

I shut down my computer, then kept on looking for it, and found it.

I'm glad I did, I remember NGRI now. I'm glad I do.

On the pic are Boz, Limper, Squirrel Nutkin, Simple Simon, Margo, Heavy G, Trainz, Maddman, Enkhidu, NGRI, Ancalagon, Jangling Jack, and Whirligig.

Good bye NGRI.

Do you have a digital camera? Take a picture of the picture. I've done that for many things since my old scanner went the way of the dinosaurs. Now I have new one but I need to set it up still.

I remember him being friendly and funny - I know it's not a very "detailed" impression, but well, those are the hallmark of a good man. It's sad that he has passed away, and my condolences to his family and friends.
