We celebrated Christmas today here as the Cartographer's son is going to his mother's for Christmas. The son and his girlfriend got me a beautiful pendulum, the Cartographer got me four Munchkin expansion sets (Munchkin 5 and 6, and Munchkin Cthulhu 2 and 3), Jungle Book the 40-years collection edition DVD, the QI Book of Quotations, and an awesome set of speakers for my pc. I am especially delighted with those, I had two cheap little things that I once bought for ten euros; this is a full surround with five speakers and a subwoofer. Excellent sound. This is doubly good as I have a USB record player, which I can now connect to my PC and finally play my records again!

So what did you get?

Still waiting for actual Christmas day to open gifts from family.
What I have got so far:
Dark Knight Special 2 Disk edition on DVD - From NameLips (Thank you again :cheerful:)

Fable 2 for the X-Box from my best friends and their kids. I'm still debating whether or not to start this next or play through Fallout 3 one more time as an evil character first.

A good feeling that my gifts have been received warmly so far. I like it when people enjoy the gifts I give them.

I had an early christmas with my gf since she couldn't come with me to NB for the holidays.

I gave her a bottle of Gewürztraminer ice wine and a heart pendant that looked a bit like a padlock, with little tiny diamonds on it.

She gave me chocolate, books, a shirt, socks, 2 giant rolls of pallet wrap (one red, one black), handcuffs, latex-washing soap and restraints.

... what?

easiest way to explain it is "extra strong cling film"

... what is pallet-wrap? Do I want to know?

It's used often in businesses such as mine. It's a clear plastic wrap, much like Saran Wrap, except that it comes in rather large rolls, almost a foot in diameter and about two feet in width. Extra strength, as Ancalagon says. You use it to wrap boxes and totes stacked on pallets. A few encirclements with the wrap, and you can draw it tight and stick it back on itself, and it binds the boxes firmly so that they can ride in safety in the trailer of a semi without fear of them falling, if they are well and firmly wrapped.

Gosh only knows what a layman such as Ancalagon uses it for. :befuddled:

Pallet wrap is awesome! I loved working with that stuff when I use to work at a furniture store. We'd wrap everything with that stuff. I wish I still had a few rolls for home use.

As for the loot I've received so far: Scene it 2 from my secret santa here:), a brand new digital camera which I wasn't expecting (from my parents), $150 from my parents which is all spent now thanks to my stupid car problems this morning:(, there are 5 gifts from my parents and sister that I haven't opened yet because I want to those open those on Christmas, homemade goodies from my boss and one of my coworkers, gift card for Safeways and Shopko, a really pretty glass ornament that my daughter made for me and a gift basket from one of guys in our gaming group. I have to say so far I've gotten spoiled.:) Oh I almost forgot about the wonderful chocolate bars Lmik sent me. :D

From my D&D group gift exchange I got a Todd McFarlane dragon to add to my collection. So far that's a pretty good haul!

Because our economical situation is fuckin' dire, my wife and I decided we would forgo gifts this year. But still, we couldn't help spoiling our kids as usual. My daughter (among other things...) got a $100 bottle of perfume that she loves, and I bought my son his first electric guitar (among other things), a Squire (Fender) Stratocaster.

Still, my sweet little angel of a daughter made the effort to buy me a nice pair of slippers. I love her so much...

Aside from nookie, nothing I get for christmas.( And nookie is still regular buisness in the Megamieuwsel house...)
I wasn't raised with the MegaConsumingSickfest and never bothered with it in any degree of seriousness. (Although I can humour the occasional "Secret Santa"- gig.)
"Sinterklaas"(St Nicholas, 5th of December) is for giving gifts and then just for kids.
Adults craving for gifts seems somehow kinda wrong to me.

Aside from the fact, i don't give a fucking damn about any religeous holiday, save the solstices.

We had both our families around yesterday, mine for lunch and PiS's for dinner. All in all it was a good day, despite my grandpa and great aunt not being really well - at least they could attend and I think they had fun as best they could.

We mainly received vouchers and cash, which will now go towards (and probably quite easily) our purchase of Guitar Hero World Tour (with instruments) and Rock Band (without instruments, hopefully that drum patch is available soon...) for the PS3 we bought each other for Christmas. Any left over, we also need an extra controller & guitar. My brothers gave us Little Big Planet, since we didn't have any games yet, and we had fun last night having a go & working out how to use our little sack guys. :)

It was a good day, but soooo tiring. We've still got another load of dishes to today, which I'm not looking forward to, but I suppose that's the way it goes!

Now that the day is done....

I got a check from my Dad and a box of chocolates. My mother got me the same thing she got me last year - nothing. My sister, the same. Talked to both on the phone to say "Merry Christmas" and talk to my niece. She liked my present to her, a couple of books about the Civil War, her latest fascination along with horses. My sister said she forgot to send anything. My mother - well, she hasn't even bothered to open my present to her yet. If she ever does, it's a Kate Rusby cd. My father, I gave him a book about 50s pop and the new Glen Campbell LP. He loved his presents.

So......... Happy happy and all that. I'm getting pretty sick of getting Scrooged every year. Last year I thought maybe I'd just abstain from X-mas this year, but that felt so wrong. Might actually do so next season. [Best present in years was my Secret Santa from here last year. Thanks again, Billy!]

It was a very good Christmas for me and the kids this year. I got more then I expected. My loot: A new digital camera, money, bath soaps and other nice smelling toiletries, a digital LCD key chain that holds up to 60 photos, new kitchen utensils, a really nice floor steamer, a coin jar that keeps track of how much money is going in (I have a feeling the balance will never be above $5 because the kids like to take my change.), The Dragon book which has a lot of cool art work and history behind the dragon lore, and a homemade ornament my 7yr old made me.

My kids got so much loot that I can't even begin to list it all so I'll just post some pictures. My entire living room was a sea of wrapping paper and boxes. The kids were so happy. All 4 of them had a really wonderful Christmas. We spent the day playing with all the new toys and games. :D

This first picture is our 7yr old daughter. She got several Webkins and nearly every Hanna Montana thing out there. Oh and she got 2 watches since I lost the one I bought for her and ended up buying another to replace it before Christmas day. We found the original watch. It was stuck inside a box that I gave my 5yr old daughter. She didn't see it so I got it out before she noticed. I'm just happy that I know what happened to it.

And the tree with all the gifts before the kids got to them.

http://i226.photobucket.com/albums/dd295/LadyofPainLoP/12-25-08002.jpg

Now comes the fun part of cleaning up. Oh did I mention the kids managed to break the tree as well. The plastic base broke in two and the tree came tumbling down half way through the opening of all the gifts. I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I wish I would have video taped the entire event. It was like a 3 ring circus this morning. :p But it was worth it. Next year I'm pushing for a real tree.

You folks with cats, just be really careful with the ribbon. Friends of ours' cat ate a bunch of it one year, and they ended up having to get her operated on & she nearly died. Apparently that stuff cuts their insides up & it won't go through their digestive system. Luckily a few years later she is doing fine, but still... be careful!

What he wrote makes sense in Germanic grammar, which doesn't use commas the same way it's used in English (as a result of French influence). For example: "I don't know, if we're still on-topic."

No, in Germanic grammar you would not be allowed to drop the relative pronoun, so it would have to be the stick, that you have implanted.

We went to my mother in law's last night to open gifts from her. I got the best Christmas gifts ever! My daughters made us bird houses. They built them and painted them and managed to keep it a secret until we opened up the boxes with them in it. My heart melted and they were so proud of their hard work. They worked on them every time they went over to spend the night. I'll take pics and post those soon. Then my mother in law shocked me with a gift that wasn't bubble bath. For the last 16yrs I could count on soap from her as a gift. This year she bought me something that I only mentioned to her once. She got me a game for the Wii that I had wanted and I played it all night. Even Bullitt got in on the fun. (It was a Karaoke game. My voice is a bit raw today.:o)

I got the following gifts:

White Rajah, a biography of Sir James Brooke - I definitely recommend reading a bit about this guy, he's a very interesting example of a Victorian adventurer - went from England to Borneo in 1841 and wound up becoming king of Sarawak. He even established a dynasty there, the White Rajahs ruled until 1949. I got this from my CM secret santa, Keeper of Secrets. I'm presently reading this one.

The Man Who Would Be King - not the Kipling story or the movie, this is about Josiah Harlan, the first American in Afghanistan.

1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus - I don't know much about this one - my uncle gave it to me because he received it as a gift but already had a copy.

The Diary of Samuel Pepys: 1 - 1660 - first volume of Pepys' diary, got this used - I wasn't expecting this one, and am quite pleased.

Champlain's Dream - a biography of Samuel de Champlain. One of my friends got this as well, but then - we live on Lake Champlain.

The Ruin of the Roman Empire - title says it all, really.

The White Tiger - winner of the 2008 Booker Prize. I read this on the 26th, and it's a great book. I loved it.

Fallout 3 - Also from Keeper of Secrets, but I haven't installed it yet. Quite happy about it though, woo!

A business card holder
A new messenger bag type of bag - however, it's too small and I'll have to return it.

And of course, the Schiele print I received from Ink Bleeder here.

I haven't done Christmas with my brother yet, though.

And Merganser I do really appreciate you only playing 50% of the time in December to leave myself, DarthFlatulent, and Badwednesday all a chance for a monthly title.

I got the PC version which doesn't seem to be the GOTY edition - there seems to be no mention of Bloodmoon or Tribunal at this point (the manual was on PDF and who reads them?) still I think I'll be there for a long time (before I realise that I completely stuffed up my character creation and need to start again).

I feel I should warn you, when I was playing Morrowind, it absorbed all of my time for months and I didn't manage to do everything, though I sure tried.
You can take over every guild, religion, etc... in the game if you do enough quests. You can be come a noble and all that.

I ended up using an empty room in one of the major cities as a storeroom because I had a bunch of stuff I wanted to keep as trophies, but there was no way to carry it all.
There is a ton of neat stuff out there, but it will get confusing as heck if you don't keep track of what you are doing and focus on an area or guild for a bit.

I got an unexpected gift yesterday. A family friend that we hadn't seen in a few years is in town and has been spending time at our house.:) It's nice to get these kinds of surprises.

All characters are viable, though some are more difficult. This is aided by the fact that any character can learn, practice, and master any and all skills, given enough time.

Don't worry, they'll find it. It's happened to me twice, and both times they got my bag to me.

They should courier it to you, btw.

They called yesterday to say they had it. Then it turned out they only had it on a list, they don't actually have it. :grey:

My brother came over last night and we exchanged gifts. He gave me:

4 books:
Raymond Chandler's Los Angeles
Life Along the Silk Road, by Susan Whitfield
Structure and History in Greek Mythology and Ritual, by Walter Burkert
The Orientalizing Revolution, also by Walter Burkert

and 2 DVDs:
Iron Man
Hellboy II

Woo, I love Burkert.

But... But... your luggage has a tracking number and everything!

I think they are liable for it, right? So at least you should end up with the money.

I got a pretty eclectic mix of stuff. My loot:

Socks and underwear
Civ Revolutions for the PS3
A promise note for an Xbox 360 once they go on sale after Christmas
REI gift certificate
IPhone car adapter
Spa gift certificate for a massage

Plus I got myself a Flip Video camera from the Ebay $1 deals that arrived Christmas Eve.

Pretty boring Christmas for me, but I spoiled the fiancee quite a bit. Her loot:

Nikon D60 Digital SLR
Planet Earth Blu-Ray
Little Big Planet
Complete Invader Zim collection
Gameboy DS travel kit
Iron Man Blu-Ray

Oh this is Air Canada we are talking about. Affectionately (!) referred to by my ex and his mother as Air Banana.

Not much in the way of customer service.

And to repeat just as AC does...

Oh c'est Air Canada que nous parlons. Affectueusement désigné par mon ex et sa mère sous le nom de la banane d'air. Pas beaucoup de la manière du service à la clientèle.

They are routinely several hundred dollars more expensive than other north american carriers.

That is because there is a law forcing them to cover all those small canadian airports in remote places and which also prevents them from charging the people in these areas a higher price than seats on well-traveled flights like Montreal - Toronto.

And they have to follow federal government rules regarding bilingualism, which can be expensive.

So they pretty much have to raise prices on all flights to compensate.

So very few people use them.

So they have financial difficulties.

So they have to be bailed out by the government every few years or they'll go bankrupt.

Solution: all flights are gratis, and the company becomes entirely supported by taxes. :D

So the government cripples them, and then gives them money to fix it?

That's no way to run a business. Why doesn't the govt just buy the airline?

It used to be owned by the government, but it was privatized in the 1980s for ideological reasons.

I felt pretty stupid having left it in there. I did think of bring back my cash with me (I loaned my sister some money for a mortgage, and she paid part of it back), but frankly, in a way, the watch is more valuable.

Saturday we celebrated Sinterklaas with my family, and my father had made a three-dimensional model of my cat which in it had the gift, but which really was an awesome gift in itself! I got a chocolate letter, a plush duckie and Scott Cunningham's Encyclopedia of Magical Herbs, very handy.

The Cartographer got magnetic poetry, which led to him, my sister, my brother and his wife and me playing the wonderful game of distributing the magnetic poety between us and putting a word down in turn, which made the following poem:

A mean strange man beneath dreamy poetry
Escaped whale fiction
When there was wisdom and desire
Over heroes in character epic books
Which explode on vivid love of crack magic science

Judge against chairs
But excite human spirit & drama
llustrating difficult questioning people
Full out after they haunt the shop monster
Between romance day fear and ancient voice tome chapter
Cover in this happy soul show
Why her old curly dog who inspired more mystery by time
So hard above sea world
My laugh like empty spine with too short, almost under evil Mark

From our novel description about a sad library smell
First teach another language at loudest volume, discover life, fight every new villain to open up favourite device,
Sooner than answer truth of plot like some write,
you have these, give each woman a paragraph or never begin easy stock
That come only here to amuse an author for his can

It is long, fill the heart, explore,
If I could travel how she did speak
Whisper sentence as he at good beautiful ear
Let you wander, say, through Word
We skim him
Then enter an offer. Take me though, as I always would grow
Sit, Al
Create, make, imagine, entertain
No difference.
Know
Ask werepage are
Middle AM will do,
Tell, live, search story, find,
But do use bed.

End.
