Have played through about four hours, so this is an imcomplete review.
Man, this game is immersive and fun. It puts you into the action immediately, but gradually shows you all the cool features.
The game is set in the 1960's, and the music and atmosphere really do it justice. The sound is great and the graphics are very good (but not perfect due to having to turn the settings down, more on that later).
Like a normal first person shooter, you have a bunch of weapons like a wrench, revolver, machine gun, shotgun, etc. That's where the similarities end, though.
Your second list of "weapons" are called 'Plasmids,' which are like genetic modifications. They all use energy from the same pool, but you can 'equip' different plasmids to do different things. You can use one to electrocute enemies (shooting it at enemies in the water is particularly effective), or snap your fingers to set objects (or people) on fire, or use telekinesis to catch and throw back grenades.
There are also passive abilities, like taking less damage, making lightning shoot all around you after you get hit, or making you hack faster. Since you can only equip a certain number, you have to judge the situation and equip the right plasmid/upgrades as necessary.
There's a ton of customization available due to this function, and it can't be explained well enough without playing the game.
I'm running a three year old system, so it's pretty choppy if I don't turn down all the graphics, which is disappointing because I just got a new video card since my old one stopped working. The new one is an Nvidia 8800 512 MB card, but still doesn't run the game well (probably because the processor is three years old).
All in all, I give it 4 out of 5 neuralnet processors. I'd boost it to 5 if it ran better on my machine, so that one is my own fault (although Half Life 2 runs pretty much perfect with all graphics turned up on my machine).
