Problem was he saw my browser saved all my passwords, and changed them before he left. Next thing I knew I lost access to my Internet accounts, including one at ezboard where I used to have this really cool set of forums about squirrels and D&D.

Dude, get with the times. Proficiency gives you +2 or +3 to hit (+3 with almost all swords), and there's no penalty per se for being non-proficient.
