I'm doing the prep-work for a Mutants and Masterminds game, with the goal of starting a bi-weekly game next year. It's a blend between 4-color Golden Age comics of the 1940's (the Shadow, early Batman, early Superman, etc.) and the more gritty Dark Age comics (Punisher, Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, etc.) of the 80's. The general outline is as follows:
The game is set in "real" Earth. Superheroes (and by extension, super powers) just don't exist, at least in any concrete, prooveable sense. Sure, some people claim this yogi can suspend his life functions and others say they've got ESP or can talk to the dead, but we all "know" those claims aren't really valid.
The characters are all high school students, part of the Physics and Astronomy club at the fictional Westchester High School, in Westchester, Anystate, USA. They have been saving up all year for a trip to Europe, culminating in a visit to the newly constructed Large Hadron Collider. As luck would have it, their physics teacher, Dr. Strauss, is very well connected and has arranged to have the group visit on October 17, the day the Super Collider is activated!
Something happened. While the students were on a tour through the control room, massive explosions rocked the LHC and the whole facility was thrown into an uproar. Somewhere in all the panic, one of the students noticed Dr. Strauss was missing. Panicked scientists ran through the control room shouting something about improper shielding, failed containment fields, and Higgs bosuns.
The next thing anyone knew, they were clearly Somewhere Else. Instead of display screens, beeping monitors, security guards, and ID badges, the students found themselves surrounded by mangled bodies, screaming men, machine gun fire, and wailing sirens. Somehow they had been transported into the middle of a battlefield! Judging from the uniforms and weaponry, they've been zapped into the middle of World War II. Can they make it back to their own time alive?
So far I've got three players, Schizm and two of my other friends. It looks like I'll have a skill savant/empathic learner, a super-genius gadgeteer, and an unstoppable speedster. Things could get pretty interesting!
