It said:
Do RIGHT, and let the consequences be GOD's.
It was one of many Jesus/God/McCain stickers plastered all over the car.
But this one seemed particularly dangerous. Isn't this the core thought of extremism? That individual people aren't responsible for the havoc they wreak in the name of Righteousness?
I am horrified by the thought of somebody who would do something his religion defines as "right" even though it clearly and obviously has a consequence of pain and suffering in other people. "If God says it's right to do this, then he's the one responsible for that pain and suffering, not me. I am simply an agent of God."
Isn't that the logic behind suicide bombers and abortion doctor assassins?
It just boggles my mind that people could so completely surrender themselves to an ideology that they no longer consider themselves individually responsible for their own actions.

You should sneak on that car a bumper-sticker that says "Do WRONG, and let the consequences be SATAN's. Weee! Irresponsibility!"
Put it just below the other.

I hear what you are saying - and it would be concerning if the owner of said bumber sticker thought in such black and white terms.
However, many bumber stickers are by their very nature designed to be controversial and engender conversation.

While I agree that this person may not think in those "black and white terms", I wonder who would put a statement on public display on their own property if they did not agree with that statement.
I mean, someone could be interested in starting a serious discussion on sexual assault, but probably shouldn't start it off with a bumper sticker that says "Rape is just another way of saying you're pretty".

I think it would be an awesome bumper sticker if your car's insurance is worth more than the car itself...:wasntme:

For what it's worth, when I read "Do RIGHT, and let the consequences be GOD's", my first thought was not that it meant something akin to "If God says it's right to do this, then he's the one responsible for that pain and suffering, not me. I am simply an agent of God."
Rather, I immediately interpreted it more like "All I can do is do what I believe is right and then trust that it will turn out for the best and have good consequences". In other words, a humbling statement in the face of Fate (aka God).
Now I agree that it can also be a statement of deresponsability for the results of your actions, but you can't be certain that's how the car owner sees it.
I'm a big fan of this one:
"The Big Bang: God said, "BANG!" and then it happened."
It's a statement of such sweeping ignorance I can't help but chuckle a bit. I know that's horribly condescending of me to say, but I'm a flawed human being and quite comfortable with that.
Other favorites include the Jesus Fish eating the Darwin Fish with the subtitle, "Survival of the Fittest." Again, it's such a misunderstanding of the essentials of Darwin's theory that I can't help but smile.
My current favorite, however, comes from the left. It's the "Coexist" bumper sticker using the symbols of various religions to form the letters. The idea that all these competing religions can occupy the same space and "respect" each other is laughable. All the "Big 3" say that they're the only real religion, and any others are out right damning at worst and misinformed and deluded at best. Oddly enough, at least the Pat Robertsons of the world have their religion down. I find myself getting pissed off at leftist healy-feely types more often than right wing nutjobs.

I can't understand the thought behind putting controversial bumper stickers of any kind on my car.
Well, I guess I have a Cthulhu fish... Does that count?

I enjoy Jean Paul Sartre's play, "The Flies," in which Orestes takes responsibility for the sins of the whole nation, because people are unwilling to take responsibility for themselves. Finally, someone quits passing the buck to God. It's downright refreshing. It disgusts me when people use religion as an excuse for abandoning personal responsibility.
I'm sure this little dictum on the bumper sticker is one shared by the jihadists in the al Quaeda playbook. It reminds me of a teeshirt I saw once that said, "Kill 'em all and let God sort 'em out!" Lovely.

I think that many people on this board are taking bumber stickers waaaaay to seriously - all they are worth is perhaps an eye roll or a conversation with your fellow passenger - but that is about it.
Take them for what they are visual sound bites without any context.
