What could be done to rise the masses of humanity to something more congnizant of its suroundings? How could we get the average joes the world over to a point where thay are looking past the tribal differences and looking at all of humanity as the tribe?

I'm afraid this will sound overly socialist, but the vast differences in living standards is a huge cause for resentment. Only when people have something to lose will they start valuing the relation to their neighbours. Before we get all people under roofs with food and clean water, we won't get anywhere.

We need projects that all nations can be involved in and contribute to.
- sending people to Mars.
- a global science thingo to cure cancer, doctors from everywhere.
- build the space elevator.
THen everyone can be proud of it all and it would be unifying.

Dude, clearly you are not thinking properly.
1) Aliens, Alien 2, Aliens 3, AVP ...etc. etc.
2) Earth has suffered 4 great mass extinctions in the past. Chances are - it'll happen again
3) BSG? Hello? They thought they killed the bad AI, but it came back again.
Gosh Limper, I'm disappointed in you.
Now, I think the human race could be more advanced were the United Nations President to mandate that the entire world switch their government civic to Ecology.
