I think everyone should have equal opportunity however that shouldn't be mistaken with everyone being equal. Everyone isn't equal and trying to force it upon society and individuals creates sickening mediocrity.
Everyone should have the right to succede or fail but nothing should be guaranted.

I wonder if anyone's going to argue that.

I'd be shocked if someone didn't.

When you play D&D, everyone has different stats, feats, and skills, which allow those characters to function differently in society. Some people end up playing the bard even though bards kind of suck. Some people roll all substandard ability score.
I think there's a line between true equality and liberty. Everyone should have liberty equally, but I don't agree that everyone is equal. People are better suited for different tasks and there is a difference in demand for those tasks, which is ultimately why classes exist. It is and always has been part of society. As long as you aren't punnishing the shit scrubbers because that's what they happen to be good at, then all is well.

I'd frame it differently. Everybody being equal doesn't mean everybody should be the same. Because this, here, is the mistaken, lowest-denominator thinking of the far Left. So, everybody is indeed morally equal (hence, equal opportunity), but the fact of life is, nobody is the same (can't do/like/perform in the same things, etc.). That's a sort of natural 'inequality', of sorts. We can't do anything about that.

Define equal opportunity. It sounds nice, but it's way too vague to actually make a decision on without having a more complete description.

Another point is that all citizens should be considered equal under law.

What about shitbag Taliban and Al Qaeda terrorists we pick up on the battlefields of Afghanistan?

If you grant them citizenship, you're a dumb fucker who deserves the limitations that imposes.
If we are going to hold the moral high ground, we should at least have to prove they are shitbag Taliban/Al Qaida terrorist scum.

Exactly.
More to the point, in addition to protecting ourselves, we should be trying to figure out why it is that these people are so pissed off at us and try to find a diplomatic way of working out our differences. That region of the world had a proud and enlightened history prior to the twentieth century. They are not incapable of being enlightened and civilized again, but they won't get there if we don't first try to coexist with them.
Yes, I realize that Israel is a large part of the problem, and I really have no idea how to work around that. It's not an easy problem, but there must be a compromise we can all live with.

I think everyone should have an opportunity for quality higher education and a guarantee that they won't be discriminated against based upon their class, race, sex, religion, or political affiliations. Hell, I can even bend myself around to ensuring a safety net to temporarily catch those who fall while climbing the ladder.
Everyone should be equal under the law and have an equal amount of Liberty (unless they do something to have that taken away as a consequence of their own actions). Their level of success should be based solely upon their own merits and abilities.
That's what I believe when I say I think everyone should have equal opportunity and freedom but not be expected to actually be equal to everyone else.

I think I can agree with that. The equal in front of the law is a bit difficult these days, as money can guy you one heck of a good lawyer...
It's a fallacy that everyone is equal. However, most people have *something* to contribute to society, even if that something is cleaning toilets. People doing menial job shouldn't have to live in squalor. As far those who can't do anything well... Darwin said the nobility of man was that we took care of the weak...

Equality means equal treatment under the law for all citizens.
This means you don't make laws that single out any one group or excludes one group in any way, shape, or form.
Hispanic, Black, Asian, Woman, Man, Gay, Straight, Bisexual, young, old, poor, rich, Liberal, conservative, religious ... or any combination of the aforementioned characteristics.

Equality means equal treatment under the law for all citizens.
So those who don't live in cities shouldn't be treated like equals.
Well DUH!

There are lots of people who are physically present in the US right now.
We can arrange these in a caste hierarchy showing who has the most rights. It's a fun game! I'll scramble them up for you:
Adult illegal immigrants
Children of citizens under 18
Adult citizens between 18 and 21
Non-citizens with resident visas
Citizens over 21
Minor illegal immigrants
The very wealthy (no legal extra rights, but we all know they can afford the fancy lawyers)
Convicted sex offenders
Foreign exchange students (these might be resident visas)
Convicted felons
Foreign diplomats
Inmates
Non-citizens with green cards
Did I miss any?
oh, and can someone rep PWD for me?
Deservedly got you covered
