View Full Version : KT is a giant sewing circle
Schizm and I were at Village Inn last night shooting the shit and talk turned, as it often does, to KT and the various goings on and posters here. We spoke of the election, and of the continual and much appreciated efforts by Coop and Snatch to make us laugh, the surprisingly insightful questions raised in the Gamer forum (defend your least favorite edition of DND indeed! Bravo!), and the joy of reading various bullshit tracts about butterflies.
I realized that Kaytastrophe really is a small community. We are not really great in number, but we ARE a community. Witness other boards we have been part of--- what happens there? What continues to happen there? What sort of drama went on? And yet this board continues to be a very comfortable place.
I think the primary reason for this is the almost universally enforced and unspoken rule: NO DRAMA.
I think at the end of the day, none of us are really interested in getting into personal drama or conflict with other posters. We'll post about bad days, good days, and personal musings, but we don't really get into it with each other very often. (And when we do, the make-up sex is fantastic.)
We are, in short, a sewing circle (or if you prefer, a poker gang or bridge club). We have arguments, often heated arguments, but rarely do they brim over past the thread they start in or the section of the board they originate from. (Xenopolitical Podium and Orbital Chapel, I'm looking at you!) I don't think any real lasting long term animosity is generated, but I may be wearing rose colored glasses. There are a few posters I disagree with. There are some I really like. A few surprise me from time to time with their insight, and some posters lend the board that indefinable SOMETHING that you only notice when it goes missing, but all things considered I think we've built up a pretty nice little place here.
I guess what I'm really trying to say with all this is that even though I've never met most of you, I feel like I know you in some way, and that is kind of strange. I'm sure we wouldn't agree about everything, but if I visited Australia sometime I'd like to visit Coopers and Atticus. I'd love to go to Canuckistan to see Northcott and Freedom Canadian and Trainz. And that's very wierd--- I don't even know you people! Why then, do I feel like despite the fact that this is "only the internet" and we can project ourselves as being anyone we want that Kaytastrophe's Regulars seem to be projections that model the actual poster fairly closely? It's something worth considering and I think something to be proud of.
To summarize: Thank you, KT, for being the hodgepodge collection of screwballs and basket cases you are. Posirep to the the best lambasting/roast of my sudden onset of amiability.
(Be strong. I'm not going to cry. I promised myself I wouldn't cry.)

I think that what you say is true, but the reason it is that way might be because this site is structured as an academy. OK, in its stated form, its a military academy, but if the rhetorical interpretation of "military" is less literal and more flavorful, then its purest form is that of an academy.
The first academy was established by Plato after the unjust murder of Socrates by Athenian (Democratic) state. His intentions were to create a place where knowledge and viewpoints were discussed openly and without fear. That is not to say that every idea has merit and will not be shot down by scholars, but it doesn mean that you don't have to worry about being killed because you hold an unpopular point of view.
In the United States, rhetoric is war. It is the intention of a rhetor to metaphorically kill his opponent. This is taken to an extreme on the internet because of its freedom. When you "kill" you opponent, you invalidate their point of view, their faulty logic, and ultimately call into question their very humanity. If you don't believe me, I would merely point to Borko, who I think we're all acquainted with.
What Kay's does is attempt to stop the "killing" and change argument from the war metaphor to the dance metaphor. We can disagree with each other without trying to destroy the other person. Ultimately, what we're doing in our conversations, is attempting to discern some form of meaning or truth from the events going on around us. Incidentally, people do this sort of thing on their own all the time; however, because people generally tend to cluster with groups composed with other people of similar ideologies, they tend to miss the diversity that a larger and varied group brings. What we have here may not be large, but it is varied, and by examining issues from a number of different angles, we're helping to avoid "the lie," which is the state where you buy into something to such an extent that you are no longer intellectually honest about your position.
For example, in my case, I'm an atheist, but I've been guilty of othering the religious, particularly fundamentalists, to a point where I fail to recognize their humanity and the possible validity of their ideologies. The question isn't how do I become more like them, but rather, how do I reinvent my rhetoric so that I take a position where I disagree with their philosophy and their agenda while not practicing the rhetoric of division? Division results from the identity and ideology of one group clashing with the identities and ideologies of other groups; however, who is to say that one ideology is more valid than another? I maintain that the test of a good ideology is whether or not it harms others, but that is a subject for another thread.
At any rate, getting back to the oiginal issue, I don't agree that Kay's is a sewing circle, but rather it is a group of scholars. What we do here is raise our awareness of the human condition and attempt to analyze it from all angles, while basing the knowledge that we bring to the table on factual information, established theory (cite please!), rather than personal insight whenever possible. In that respect, I think this place is successful.

It's a good thing I didn't even try to go into mysticism, because that's where things get really weird. As an atheist, I believe in the validity of mysticism. Go reconcile that.

I never realized how much I drank last night. Here I was thinking I went to sleep after spooning with Schizm in his car for a while, but apparently Singularity and I went on a binge together after Schizm left!
This is exactly the sort of keen insight into my motives I come here for. :win:

I think KT's is great, too, and I think it's great because of the people. On older boards, in other places, there were more of us and sometimes the "shouting to be heard" got so loud that lines were crossed and grudges formed. That's not so likely to occur, here. Factor in the fact that a lot of us have been down that road and have no desire to repeat some of what may have happened and I think we usually take a second longer than we otherwise would to listen to each other. Most of you guys are pretty interesting fucking people. The smaller community and the theme make it much more obvious than usual that we are posting in Kay's playground and we are all usually polite enough to abide by her rules, which helps as well. All in all, I'm immensely grateful that this place is here and that I post here; I don't think Bella (and TH) are thanked enough for keeping it open and available to us. So, thank you guys.
That was the official reason why this place is so cordial and full of win. The actual reason is that everyone here is trying to make moves on Bella while Veraj is off in another thread; there's not enough time to fight.

I don't think it was Ernest Borgnine, Caliphis. If my memory serves me, I was covered in baby oil and the picture was Charles Bronson from The Dirty Dozen.

Personally, I like coming here to see what people are saying about their lives, world events and hobbies that interest me. I've been around this community (and the various progenitors) since Eric Noah's 3e website so I've gotten to know the personalities of most of the old timers pretty well. I'm not so much a prolific poster to due the nature of my job but when I get a chance I like to have fun on these boards.
Bottom line is that I enjoy coming here, enjoy everybody's posts and and always have fun.

This is something I admire as well. It truly doesn't matter what an admin does if drama erupts, it's going to continue to be drama unless the other posters on the board don't stand for it. I've seen KT make its own policy in this respect and I can't tell you how impressive it is. This rule has worked to create the calm discussion atmosphere and yet hasn't squashed the funny. Big Drama Post is followed by three Take It Fucking Elsewhere posts and then we're on to So What Did You Guys Think of That Topless Newscasting Video?
LOVE IT.

I want to think this way again. I've met close to three dozen people from this board and others, over the last decade. One bad experience has soured me from wanting to let strangers into my home again, but then I remember that others have been kind enough to put up with me, so I waffle. Optimistically I believe that most of us post without masks, but not without protections. We don't know each other's deep dark secrets, nor do we probably want to. But yeah, there are still people I fervantly wish to hang out with before I die, and would even buy the first round.
Brynja and Cat Nebula will run away with me if it's the LAST THING I DO! (I'm not a creepy stalker, I swear!) :o

UNLESS you take into account the odd member that takes things way too seriously.
Can't think of one at the moment, but I'm sure we've had some sour apples in the past.
Kay would probably have a better memory of 'em if they existed.
I certainly don't have a schtick, but for sure I think I'm a goofball. Freedom Canadian knows
