I'm taking the Level 1 Certification exam in Final Cut Pro 6 tomorrow. By 11 AM tomorrow morning, I will know if I am an Apple Certified Pro or not. I took the practice exam and got 34/37 right, so I'm 91.8 percent confident that I will pass. I am still a bit nervous, however, and will be breaking out all the old college cramming skills I can recall, including the "sniffing the orange" trick.

I haven't been this nervous (or excited) about anything for a long time!

Sniffing the orange?

"Sniffing the Orange"

Given that smell is very strongly linked to memory, if you eat an orange while you study, you can associate that smell to whatever you are studying. Then, during the exam, you eat another orange. The smell triggers associations with memory formed during studying. Hence, you remember things better.

Variants include eating chocolate, chewing mint gum, and sniffing perfume. Basically, you're trying to get a strong scent and key it to whatever you study. Some profs don't like food in class, so I've previously done this using oranges while studying (delicious and educational!) and then bringing a box of orange tic-tacs to the exam.

Radu & Yig, that's a cool study tip - haven't heard it before, but I'm certainly willing to try it in the future.

And good luck Radu for the exam!

Oh yeah, we did this a lot in undergrad. Specific types of perfume, different for each class or subject area.

We also would chew nicotine gum while studying in grad school, and then again right before the exams. Again, no clue if it worked or not, but i survived both experiences relatively intact, so at least neither killed me ;)

Hopefully this will turn into some freelance video editing work. I've got an ad up on craig's list now. If it doesn't pan out soon, there is also an Apple Training Center here in Albuquerque. In order to get the Level 2 Certification (the highest offered by Apple) you need to take their class and have a level 1 cert already.

Level 1 says "This guy is not a novice. He can do most things pretty well and knows quite a bit about what's what."

Level 2 says "This guy knows the program intimately. There are few, if any, commands he doesn't understand, and he can answer damn near any question you may have. He's about as familiar with FCP as the programmers."

With a level 2 certification, I really think doors will open for me. I'd like to get some work based off of the level 1 alone, and if that happens it will be great, but I'm almost positive that a level 2 certification WILL result in job offers. There aren't that many people around with that kind of credential.

When can you test for a level 2 ? I thought you lived in Japan for some reason.....

Radu

I used to live in Japan. Last year I taught English there, but I returned to the USA in November. Sometimes, I still wish I was over there, but c'est la vie I guess. I'm debating how long I want to wait before signing up for the L2 class.

Well done Rads.

I am confused though - what actually are you certified to do now?

Radu

Final Cut Pro is a film and video editing suite from Apple. The certification I have says that I know the essentials of the program and could reasonably be expected to complete most tasks an editor would be required to do.

I would like to be a professional video editor, either for film or TV, so this is a nice first step.

I hear some studios are opening up in Albuquerque. Don't know where you go to get a piece of that action, though.
