Well, I had some shithead bother me for several hours Wednesday night. Some ENWorld scumbag. I forgot what he was nattering on about as I had been drinking very heavily but he was some boy genius who wouldn't drink and kept going on and on about how smart he was. I really wish I had his name . . .
I shall post more stories in time.
Ah and Alpha, thanks for the kind words. :)

Keeper's Call of Cthulhu game + NTLers + sweet handbag + 9th-story Rooftop + Canadian dude mixing drinks + appletinis + killing the entire party single-handedly = Obryn's idea of a good time. :)

I believe that was Rogue Eidolon.
Keeper's Cthulhu game was pretty much the high point. Gaming with NTLers on the roof of a hotel overlooking the city, with a bartender on hand bringing us drinks, what more could you ask for.
Then the nutty professor above me decided to try and jump a 20' chasm and angered a Great Old One. My character passed the sanity check so I was still in control of my reason. I responded by shooting his ass, hoping to appease the angered deity. It did not work, and I got the flesh ripped from my bones by an elder god.
Good times.

:D I'm just glad you folks were entertained by my character's jackassery instead of annoyed by it. And really, getting shot by my manservant's wife was a fitting way to go.

We got back about 8:00 last night, and were in bed by 9:30.
My vote for Biggest Asshole Hanger-on: Chris Rose of Twin Rose. That guy is a worthless bag of drunken flesh.
High point of the con? Just seeing everyone again. I had some really cool gaming experiences, and some not-so-great ones as well.
Oh, and Nerfherder is just as pleasant and entertaining IRL as he is online. I'll be sorry to see him head home later today.

Who the heck is Chris Rose? Once upon a time he created a character generator (which wasn't all that hot) and now he thinks he's all that. Really though, he's nothing but a liar and a mooch. Oh, and a drunk.

I agree with you that he is an irritating combo of arrogance and social ineptitude*, but some people seem to like him. Either that or they let him hang around because they feel sorry for him. You might ask my husband. He seems to like the guy.

Gotcha. I assume he is a poster at CM or ENWorld? Is that how you had to interact with him? Did you see him at one of the parties?

Wow. Your husband does not strike me as one who tolerates fools easily. It kind of surprises me that he does kind of like him, based upon the impression he made on me. As I said, perhaps I am becoming much less tolerant of gamers and the stereotype. But he struck me as a total knob. Maybe it was because I was drinking, wanted to sit down and sort of got stuck in a conversation with him I wanted no part of. Also, since I tend to be a lot more polite IRL than on message boards I would have considered it extremely rude to say 'excuse me but you are fucktard. I am leaving this conversation ASAP.'

I played in Rystil Arden/Rogue Eidolon's Iron Heroes game last year. At the party Wed night I went up to him,
"hey RE, remember me?!"
RE refuses to make eye contact and starts shifting nervously around "uhhh, yeah"
"Well its really good to see you again"
more shifting around nervously and refusing to make eye contact "uhh yeah"
Me taking a hint a getting ready to vacate the area "I will be mixing around, catch ya later"
RE still shifting around and refusing to make eye contact "uhhh yeah"
for a deaf person seeing that kind of body language and lackluster response is very negative. I chalked it up to him being drunk but now i do not know.

Dr. M, give Keeper his account back. ;)
I wasn't afflicted by RE, but I was nearby for some of his "conversations" and witnessed him running a game. Wow.
The CoC game was awesome. I am so happy I got to play. I'm hoping to get in on the ground level of the next one so I know the character a bit better. Thanks to Freedom Canadian and Steve (if he has a board name, I do not know it) for keeping us in booze.

That's fucked up.
Doesn't make much sense because for a deaf person, you're quite pleasant to be with (more so than many gamers with perfectly good hearing but fuck-all for social skills) and also, as far as I could tell, you're not that deaf. Or very, very good at reading lips. Or very very very good at pretending to know exactly what's going on.

Combination of all three :D
I discovered that by turning my hearing aids DOWN a bit it helped me hear a lot better. Kept the background noise down and made it easier to pick out voices close to me. I read lips very well, survival mechanism. I also have a nasty habit of nodding and saying yes to keep people talking even if I miss what is being said, gets me in trouble sometimes. :)

IIRC, he took over the tech aspects of ENWorld while Spoony was having his issues with them (in fact, he was one of the major reasons Spoony left), and then promptly quit when Spoony came back to ENW.

I am not sure WHAT Steve's board name is. I don't think he posts much.
As far as next year goes, I had a great time running CoC but that group was really big. I am considering trying a different approach for next year so the groups can be smaller.

sure, that might work. people would play in one or the other (only drawback from player POV is that we might miss playing with others that we have fun with), and you could bitch about the group that played worse than the other. :)

And this is my one hesitation. I guess what I would have to find out is the balance between trying to work in everyone and taking our chances vs giving a smaller group a more intimate setting. That or just saying 'the first six people and no more' and I really don't want to do that.
See, if we had dinner together we could all get together and it might be kind of fun for the two groups to exchange stories after the games.

I for one was impressed as hell that you ran that good a game with that many players. I can see wanting to cut it down though. It would be more work, but possibly there could be two different, but related games? Group 1 investigates some weird happening and probably get killed/go insane, then Group 2 discovers the same thing. Maybe have one player guest star as a victim in an insane asylum or something. That would be twice the work though, just a thought.
It was a phenomenal game. Everyone was good, but several players were exceptional. Obryn was great of course as Dr. Parish, the stuffy, proper professor who began losing his mind the more books he read. nerfherder was great as his colleage, an expert on artifacts who was out of his mind. My favorite was when they were discussing the stories of the wendigo and he found the chapter on cannibalism to be 'rather erotic'. Shell did wonderfully as his cold bitchy wife, popping him with medication any time he started acting too loopy. Yangnome and Alpha Ralpha did great as the French-Canadian driver and the chinese cook as well. And BOZ's unintelligible professor - the only one to survive! He's mumbling in an insane asylum, but he could probably still teach his classes if he could avoid eating human flesh for an hour or so.

that's actually not a half bad idea. may not be perfect, but might get the job done. it would work best if you have a scenario like the one we played at the last two cons, which could be devided up amongst two sessions.
might be a lot of work to make it workable, though.
And BOZ's unintelligible professor - the only one to survive! He's mumbling in an insane asylum, but he could probably still teach his classes if he could avoid eating human flesh for an hour or so.
yeah, he probably wouldn't be that much different than he was before. ;)
yeah, regarding party size, i definitely felt like i was interacting more last year than i was this year. there were already a number of characters handling the important action/dialogue parts, so i didn't feel like i had as much to add. not that it wasn't fun to watch how things developed. :)

See one of the possibilities I had considered is getting six players to play characters and having the other six players play in the next room. Perhaps I could get an assistant to be in one room answering questions while I go back and forth. Then the players could meet up at the end to fight a common goal. Now, I don't want to give away with the secret would be but I suppose I will have to figure out who will be there.
Its one of those things I will be thinking about for a few months and as soon as Christmas is over start sending out feelers as to how we can best do this.
that sounds better than the other ways of handling it. that, again, sounds like a lot of work for you - and would likely require as much prep as two consecutive games - but it has the nice effect of two simultaneous games rather than one followed by another. give it some thought; i for one like it!

I had a blast at the CoC as usual. And thanks to Keeper and Whirligig for the gift! :)
I think I actually had the opposite experience that Boz did, though...I felt like I was just doing more this year. Probably because I realized that I had clamped up last year and was purposefully trying to be more invovled.
Sorry I missed the Izzy/GG dinner, though. :( Had a thing come up unexpedidly Thursday night.
The other highlight for me had to have been True Dungeon. I played for the first time this year and am now vigerously kicking myself in the stomach for missing it in previous years. Repeatidly kicking. It was a complete blast...not nearly as cheesy as I thought it would be, and damn if some of the puzzles weren't tough. I got in with a good party and we didn't lose anyone until the last room (I told them it was the white eye, but they wouldn't believe me until the paladin tried the red one and got his soul destroyed)...heck, our bard even had an ocarina (one of the Zelda ones) that he played during combat. I'm glad they gave us those penlights, though (which I hear was new this year)...damn dark in there.

It would be even better if we get a suite at Embassy. That way we could play in the 'living room' and have 5-6 players in each group where we could play in a more traditional way - quiet, more props, I could make use of music (and drinks and snacks could be easy to do.
We could have one group at 1 or so, have dinner, then have another group at 7. THEN we could maybe get together somewhere for drinks to talk about the two groups. Believe me, I had fun but I think it would be more fun with two smaller groups.
Also, if we had a suite, we could play a murder mystery game I have (kind of like a LARP - you play the character and search for clues and interview each other in the room).

Okay...this is quoted directly from my rant on CM:
Let's see...the FIRST person I met at GenCon was Twin Rose. Man...not a good way to start the con. He went off on how he saved EnWorld and they were going to beg to have him back. I don't even post on EnWorld and I know about the crash that lost 6 months of posts!
The next morning, I was surprised and disgusted to find him passed out on my hotel room floor. Fortunately, it was a one night thing and everyone in the room agreed that he couldn't stay another night unless he forked over some ridiculous amount of cash (I arbitrarily decided $150 per night would be good).
Thursday evening, I was rather frustrated when he wouldn't leave Diehard Murphy's side. I really wanted a chance to chat with DM, but couldn't stomach the smell of Twin Rose. He was so drunk, he <gasp> spilled a drink on DangerGirl and had drinks spilled all down his shirt. If there's one thing I cannot tolerate it is someone who wastes alcohol.
This was the same evening he repeatedly tried to get DangerGirl to "go somewhere" with him. As if the ring on her finger and her rather blatant disgust didn't indicate she wasn't available.
Friday morning...around 3:30am, the phone in our room rings. I roll over and answer it mentally taking a tally of the number of people who'd come in throughout the evening. Since everyone was in the room, I was confused.
"Hello!" said a rather happy person on the other end.
"Uh...who is this?" said a rather tired keryn.
"Chris! Is Gertie there?" (Gertie = Xath)
"Uh...yes. She's asleep...like the rest of us," said an increasingly grumpy keryn.
dramatic pause
"No...you cannot stay in our room, you cannot 'crash' on our floor, you cannot stop by for a minute. Fuck off and don't call again," said a very grumpy keryn before slamming the phone down and rolling back over.
Mind you, he spent all evening Wednesday drinking with rebel scum. Then on Thursday, he took Xath to a publisher's dinner (which no one should turn down). When she got there, he had been regaling his comrades about how his "date" stood him up. He spent the evening insinuating that he and Xath were "together" and trying to get her to "go somewhere" with him. Needless to say, she didn't take it well.
Thus ends my Twin Rose rant.
Now...for the rest:
Ranger Wickett, how many times does a girl have to tell you her name? Seriously. I "met" you for the first time about ten times this con. I realize I'm not an important publisher or big wig poster...but still.
The podcast guy was extremely annoying. I was really tempted to just walk out during his speech. Only the hope of girl on girl boob squishing action kept me there.
The GenCon guy in the Embassy lobby was really painfully annoying. Thank you, Fett & Hobo for taking care of that.
The lady who tried to sell me fairies stuff...really...do I look like the kind of girl who likes fairies? What gave it away? The camo corset? The stuffed cthulu in my bag? Or was it the skulls on my headband?
Okay...I think that's it.
On more positive notes, I was thrilled to meet Keeper & Whirli. You two are adorable! Keeper & Madman make a mean ice water. Shelly is so adorable it hurts. Goblin Girl and Wil make the most adorable couple and are some of the nicest people I met at the con.
I can't wait for next year!

I was especially fond of your rant about Chris Rose as I had no idea who he was until after the fact. I was making drinks Thursday night and this total tool was behind me fucking around and spilling Captain Morgan everywhere. Captain Morgan! *shakes fist*

I've heard people bitching about this Twin Rose guy, but a light finally went on. He was the tool smoking out in the hallway. Now I smoke, as do several other there, but the rest of us have the good sense to a) not smoke in someone's hotel room who doesn't smoke or just doesn't want it in their room, especially when they're being kind enough to host a party or b) risk getting the party broken up by smoking in the hall. If someone complains there's no doubt that security would take a dim view of everyone there.
And it was great meeting you too keryn, can't wait until next year!

The lady who tried to sell me fairies stuff...really...do I look like the kind of girl who likes fairies? What gave it away? The camo corset? The stuffed cthulu in my bag? Or was it the skulls on my headband?
Ah, but every woman likes faeries. Your camo/skull stuff just means you don't have any, so you clearly need to buy some :p

IIRC, he took over the tech aspects of ENWorld while Spoony was having his issues with them (in fact, he was one of the major reasons Spoony left), and then promptly quit when Spoony came back to ENW.
He didn't leave entirely until after the Gamestore was closed. After he nuked 6 months of posts his relationship with Russ became -- how should I put this -- strained.

I'm glad you liked the RPG as well as True Dungeon. Though, not to crap on TD, this was the first year I did not play because last year was not fun, combined with the increased cost of the event.
But it sounds like you enjoyed it so maybe its back on track.
Well, remember that I still have the "ZOMG Newbie!!!" glasses on. It was all new to me, so I may have missed stuff.
But I did think it was fun...very atmospheric, and probably as close to "reality" you can get to in a hotel ballroom. I liked the oppressive atmosphere the walls and props created, particularly when we were going through the streets in the first part, and the way some things were foreshadowed (like you saw the adverts for the statuary shop before you actually went in). My favorite was probably the Medusa room...there actually was a volunteer playing the Medusa, and if you made eye contact with her you'd have to save versus being stoned. That was probably the combat we came closest to losing because it us a long time to work the combat board with our eyes closed.
I agree, though...$35 did seem a bit steep.
What didn't you like about last year? I suppose we can compare notes. And if you decide not to play again you could always give me your tokens. :D

I was thrilled to meet Keeper & Whirli. You two are adorable!
Thanks! I was also thrilled to meet you and your adorable arm candy. :D
I'm so glad we finally got to meet and wish the seating arrangements would have been better so that I'd have gotten more of a chance to talk to everyone at your table.
I had a blast at the CoC as usual. And thanks to Keeper and Whirligig for the gift! :)
d'oh - same here! :)
man, sounds like i missed out on some good partying, despite the Chris TwinRose stuff. ;)
the only *partying* i did get to do was meeting up with my friend at a local bar... only to find that she was already so drunk that she was not even really herself, and telling everyone how she was going to fuck them (including the friend i had brought with me)... in front of her exasperated boyfriend. yeesh... we didn't stay long, and my other friend wound up sleeping in our room instead of my drunkended friend's place - on our anniversary night. :( not exactly a magical moment! fortunately, saturday was much better, thank you all. :)

Actually, now that I think about it Boz, what DO you do in the evenings at the con? I never see you at any of the parties. You know, you are welcome to come.

I agree with you that he is an irritating combo of arrogance and social ineptitude*, but some people seem to like him. Either that or they let him hang around because they feel sorry for him. You might ask my husband. He seems to like the guy.
*Yes, I actually do know that this description could describe many gamers.
This shocks me. RE did two things I CANNOT STAND in the one game we were both in.
1. Cheated on die rolls. I don't mean one fib. I mean a steady habit of rolling out of sight and declaring successes. I will give him some credit...he was clever enough to pretend not to know what he was aiming for some of the time. And he sometimes "rolled" a 13 or 14 when a 20 wasn't needed.
2. Rules-lawyered. In a con game. I'm not talking one short discussion..I mean EVERY FUCKING ROUND. "I think I should get a conviction point for that" was said so often it was like a nervous tic.
Irritating. Social. Retard.

Cheaters get the shit knocked out of them in my game.

No problem. Next year I will make sure you know about all the ones you'll need.
I also have a nasty habit of nodding and saying yes to keep people talking even if I miss what is being said, gets me in trouble sometimes. :)
You're that chinese guy I work with? Holy shit!

Word. He seemed pretty fucking high most of the time as well, though I guess it could have just been his personality.
But he likes paper hats.

This is how i feel. I regret only being in 2 games - one got cancelled, and i only signed up for one activity a day. And i STILL didn't have time to eat or sleep. Seriously, i only slept in my hotel 2/5 nights.
Next year: only 1 day badge, pick up games only, aim for 2/day, buy more snack food, drink more water, and stay in Queenie block.
And leave boyfriend at home.
Other than that it was a life changing experience.

Actually this is much simpler than the plan I was planing to tell him. Mine involved phone number, flow charts, contact lists and detailed schedules like a European train station.
Just follow Maddman's advice.

awesome, Alpha Ralpha does such a good impression of a chinese guy, it even carries over onto the internet. ;)
