View Full Version : Medieval Sword Fighting

So I went on this medieval sword fighting course and it was absolutely great!

A French medieval weapon master, Laurent Bernard, came to the Netherlands on invitation of the Order of the Northern Wind, who gave the course. Laurent taught us some sword fighting techniques, based on medieval manuscripts, and tought us how to use these without hurting your partner (he is an expert on show fighting for festivals and television). Mostly that means doing the actual strike but talking to your partner beforehand so he knows what to expect and can get the appropriate counter in time; and aiming just sideways, above or in front of your fighting partner.

What I really liked was that we did not just focus on techniques, but also were immediately taught how to use them in a show fight, building up a fight the first day, and having to make up our own soon. Also the Order itself had workshops on fighting with sword and buckler, spearfighting, unarmed and dagger combat, master strokes, biomechanics, poleaxe, etc.. The first two days we fought at the camping we were all staying at, the last three in a fort, which of course added atmosphere to it all.

It was funny to see the distinct types of people who enrolled in the course. There were the historians, who were interested mostly in the exact way that knights fought; there were the sports people, who thought waving a sword around was an interesting new way to train your body; and there were the gamers, who were interested in learning how their character actually would feel. It was fun to make a gaming-related joke and seeing half the other people burst out laughing while the other half looked at us as if we were not quite right in the head. Of course it was also the gamers who decided that if beer was not available on the camping, we would go out and get it ourselves so we could at least enjoy a pint or two after a day of hard work.:D

Now I have a stiff back, sore wrists, burned shoulders and muscle cramps in my legs, a destroyed pair of combats, two wooden swords and an enormous entusiasm to find a swordfighting club nearerby to join!

It was remarkably cheap. 150 euros for the five days, including a place on the camping, drinks, lunch and a Thursday night barbecue. There were some angels from heaven disguised as girls who also made breakfast and dinner, which you could partake in for just 20 euros for everything. Bless them! Except when they started baking deliciously smelling pancakes at 3 pm on Tuesday when we had to wait til 6 to actually eat... that was a form of medieval torture I guess...

You like pics? I post more pics!!!

With a toddler and tight finances, even assuming cash on par, that's a week's groceries. ;) I was thinking more the $30/month I used to pay for training, and even that's not feasible these days... thanks to trying to keep up with a child going through the "terrible twos" more than anything else. Maybe in a few more months, now that it looks like things are quieting down. Though I'd really love to train with a local Wushu master who's got an international rep, but there's no bloody way I could afford what he charges.

Ah see, that's where you have to set your priorities straight. I have no toddlers so I can go on holiday.:)

That all looks like it would be great fun. How many people attended? Were the numbers limited?

I don't know if the numbers were limited, about 50 people attended all counted, so including mentors and organization.

Ah, the president posted a group photo:
(I am the one lying on the floor, those pieces of paper we are all holding up are our hard-earned certificates)

You Eurpoeans have all the best period combat societies!

This thread makes me want to go grab my SCA armor out of the garage, fix it, and head to a fight practice to beat on my friends with sticks.

I was reading about a gladiator school in Greece. They do training for about $32 a day. This sounds fun too.

This was the first time, there is this club the Order of the Northern Wind, and they organise a summer course every year. This is the first year I attended.

Bunnik (near Utrecht, in the Netherlands), though English spoken. 150 euros for a midweek. The next one is in 2008.:p

I joined the militia! :) The militia is a group of people who train twice a month with the core of fighters, with lots of different weapons and techniques. They also join in shows, but as seperate more street theater oriented little groups, or as background fighters, and of course to make up numbers as the army.

From the description:

In the militia you can expect several training subjects: agility, coördination, fitness training, group training (marching, formations, rugby scrums, line fighting (ie spear and shield wall)) and individual technique training with all types of weapons (spear, knife, sword, unarmed).

My poor pacifist parents were so disappointed in me when I told them...:D
