Anyone try this? I'm wondering how easy this is and whether there is a decent kit out there for a beginner.

Sure. Anna and I do this all the time. It's a bit messy and involved, and takes time to do, but the results are good.

I'm generally thought of (quite correctly) as an idiot. Is this something that is pretty simple to figure out? Are there kits out there, or is this simply a matter of getting the equipment, checking out the internet for a recipe or two, etc.
What kind of brew do you make? Anything cool?

There are starter kits available- they give you tools and basic instructions on brewing, and there pre-packaged beers where some of the initial work is done for you. You just have to mix things, cook, and ferment. Pretty easy, really. We've made steam beers, pale and dark ales, stouts, wheat beers and so forth. I'm partial to a really dark stout, myself. :)

Nice...as am I. I like darker beers in general. If its too light and fizzy, I'm out. :D

Lisa i am not a brewer, but i saw an online article last week that suggested a starter brewing kit as a great gift for the guy in your life ( that or a nice leatherman knife) so, if i find it and show it to you, lisa, would you be able to assess them and then tell disco if the models(s) shown would be a good place to start?

I might be able to, sure.
