Just now surfacing. A lot is robably going to be made of this pic and probably all of it wrong. I see two colleagues who don't hate each other joshing. It kinda gives me hope.

I don't think the pundits will see it that way but I do.

It's good to see the humanity behind the political machines.

With our fucked up political situation we don't see near enough of the pol's acting human or showing an actual sense of humor. Used to be that after the days work fighting things out on the floor that they could get together for a drink and talk in the evening... now they would be bitched out for not being loyal to the party...

Amen.

That would be glorious indeed.

"Ok, I beat you, I'm running the show. Now why don't we have a drink at my house tomorrow night and you can share a few ideas with me."

If only.

If only.I'd love that, would be a lot less wastefull of the talent that we actually have in Washington :( Things are fucked up enough that it would be an improvement if they could just talk about sports or the weather...

Remember the old original plan of the winner being president and the runner-up being vice president?

Could be hella interesting, I tell you, especially if the VP had a more defined role than "senate tie breaker and next in line in case of death".

Barak is totally gonna sucker-punch John on that pic.

I've always been a firm believer in that. I think it would have been great and worth the trouble of making it work.

McCain may be tenacious, but I totally think Barry could kick his ass.

The last Vice President selected under this scheme wound up killing a man while in office, and was eventually prosecuted for treason (his own president's idea)

Dick Cheney wasn't elected vice president by coming in second to Bush in the presidential race, either.

And the election methodology din't have a causal relationship to dueling.

Mmm. Didn't it? Let's see - the fractious election in the House of Representatives soured Jefferson & Burr's already rocky relationship. Jefferson never forgave Burr for how the election went down. So Burr, of course, didn't want to continue being Jefferson's vice president and instead ran for Governor of New York - enter Hamilton (well known for making nasty remarks about people and fighting duels!) to make a nasty remark (supposedly he implied that Burr was committing incest with his daughter) and events lead to one dead 10-dollar-bill man.

But! If the election system had worked differently, with the running-mate system we use today, Jefferson and Burr would never have had such a nasty adversarial relationship and Burr might have continued as Jefferson's VP! Hamilton (very active in New York politics, and related to several of Burr's political adversaries in that state) wouldn't have had a reason to deride our third vice president.

a-HA!

This sounds more like a fuckwit collection thrown toether in an already temestous teapot. AND historical atmosphere.

I would be willing to bet my bottom dollar that if second place in the next 10 elections became VP we would have no duels.

Not that it wouldn't make for an interesting news cycle... FOX News- Fair and Balanced and cting Second for the Republican Candidate!

See, now I'm not sure what the better tradition to bring back is: runner ups becoming VP, or duels.

Assuming each candidate actually enjoyed the company of the other. I suspect in today's politics, it's a rare thing to find people who can separate their party's ideology from their opponent's personality. Things have become so partisan.

I often wonder if the party leaders here in Canada ever talk about anything else other than politics or if they would meet for a drink after hours. I just can't envision it.
