i worked managing a dining facility within a modest sized airport--prior to september 11th--and sadly, i think even an object like that could have passed thru. the token security staff were minimum wage part timers, who spent abt as much time giving directions to travelers as anything else-- a breezy explanation that it was hi tech computer equipment, a testing device for the local nuclear plant, or some such would have resulted in a have a nice day move along, ......interesting to speculate how much things have changed in so short a time.
