I read someone suggesting that top 5 lists are a better way to learn something about a person than to ask them for example of a top 100 list - the extra information only adds noise instead of insight.

To follow that thought, what are your five most favorite music albums?

Mine are:

1. Pixies - Surfer Rosa
2. The Knife - Deep Cuts
3. Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
4. The White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
5. dEUS - The Ideal Crash

I've only heard of two of those bands, I think we have little in common musically. I couldn't do a Top 5 Albums of all time, because I rarely go back to listening to an album after about a year, most I'll only listen to for a few months. I could give you my current Top 5, will you settle for that? Or Top 5 Albums I think you should hear (but probably haven't).

Current is fine - that's essentially what my list is, aside of a few albums I listen to a lot right now (that I excluded from the list) which I suspect are infatuations that will fade with time - like Justice's Cross, for example.

Current no particular order

1. Amy Winehouse - Back to Black
2. Lillie Allen - Alright Still
3. Nina Simone - Very Best of...
4. Joss Stone - Mind, Body and Soul
5. Gwen Stefani - The Sweet Escape

The one's in bold are my most recent CD purchases, I prefer Gwen's debut soul album however. I generally prefer female vocalists, and singers that you don't need to get the lyrics sheet out to discover what they are saying. If I was to do an All Time list the only album I'm sure would be in there is Casanova by The Divine Comedy, which oddly has a male lead vocal. I've been through a Metal (including thrash) phase when I was in my teens and indie and dance phase in my twenties, now I'm in my thirties I've grown out of most of that stuff. As you can see I have pretty mainstream tastes, although I do like the odd weird artist, and do have a love for J-Pop.

A Top Five?

Impossible. But here are ten albums I consistently return to year after year after year... And I didn't have to think too hard about this list, at least not as hard as a Top Five:

The Beatles - Revolver
Camper Van Beethoven - Key Lime Pie
Al Green - Greatest Hits
John Wesley Harding - New Deal
Big Star - #1 Record/Radio City
Uncle Tupelo - March 16-20, 1992
Jeff Buckley - Grace
The Delmore Brothers - Brown's Ferry Blues
Chuck Willis - Stroll On
Crowded House - Woodface

Rage against the Machine - Evil Empire (Rollin' down Rodeo with a SHOTGUN!!)
Nirvana - In Utero (cos I'm very Ape, and I'm very NICE)
Radiohead - OK Computer (like a cat, tied to a stake)
Soundgarden - SuperUnknown (Feel the rythym in your bones)

I think it's safe to say our average age is closer to 40 than 20.

Heh. 15 years old? That's 92, and so falls into the "new stuff"-category for me...

Well, I listen to it and still cannot believe it was 15 years ago. It is still "new" to me, too. :D
