Full fathom five Mr. Christopher lies;
Of his bones are coral made;
Those are pearls that were his eyes:
Nothing of him that doth fade
But doth suffer a sea-change
Into something rich and strange.
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell:
Ding-dong.
Hark! now I hear them, ding-dong, bell.

:weepy:
O CAPTAIN! my Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather’d every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
O Captain! my Captain! rise up and hear the bells;
Rise up—for you the flag is flung—for you the bugle trills;
For you bouquets and ribbon’d wreaths—for you the shores a-crowding;
For you they call, the swaying mass, their eager faces turning;
Here Captain! dear father!
This arm beneath your head;
It is some dream that on the deck,
You’ve fallen cold and dead.
My Captain does not answer, his lips are pale and still;
My father does not feel my arm, he has no pulse nor will;
The ship is anchor’d safe and sound, its voyage closed and done;
From fearful trip, the victor ship, comes in with object won;
Exult, O shores, and ring, O bells!
But I, with mournful tread,
Walk the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.
:salute:

And on the pedestal these words appear:
"My name is Nothingland, board of boards:
Look on my posts, ye mighty, and despair!"

In a musty old hall in ENWorld they prayed
At the Internet Captain's Cathedral
The churchbell chimed 'till it rang hundreds of times
For the Head Squirrel of the SS N-T-L

I was at work when the bar closed. When I got there, I saw Mr. Christopher escorting the last few hiccuping stranglers out. When the sign swung from Always Open to Closed Forever, I teared up. Then I threw my hands up in the air and screamed, "What else are you going to ruin, huh? First Firefly, now Nothingland?!"

Ode on a message board poised and unchanging until it's last bit is brought down.....
THOU still unravish'd bride of quietness,
Thou foster-child of Silence and slow Time,
Sylvan historian, who canst thus express
A flowery tale more sweetly than our rhyme:
What leaf-fringed legend haunts about thy shape
Of deities or mortals, or of both,
In Tempe or the dales of Arcady?
What men or gods are these? What maidens loth?
What mad pursuit? What struggle to escape?
What pipes and timbrels? What wild ecstasy?
Heard melodies are sweet, but those unheard
Are sweeter; therefore, ye soft pipes, play on;
Not to the sensual ear, but, more endear'd,
Pipe to the spirit ditties of no tone:
Fair youth, beneath the trees, thou canst not leave
Thy song, nor ever can those trees be bare;
Bold Lover, never, never canst thou kiss,
Though winning near the goal—yet, do not grieve;
She cannot fade, though thou hast not thy bliss,
For ever wilt thou love, and she be fair!
Ah, happy, happy boughs! that cannot shed
Your leaves, nor ever bid the Spring adieu;
And, happy melodist, unwearièd,
For ever piping songs for ever new;
More happy love! more happy, happy love!
For ever warm and still to be enjoy'd,
For ever panting, and for ever young;
All breathing human passion far above,
That leaves a heart high-sorrowful and cloy'd,
A burning forehead, and a parching tongue.
Who are these coming to the sacrifice?
To what green altar, O mysterious priest,
Lead'st thou that heifer lowing at the skies,
And all her silken flanks with garlands drest?
What little town by river or sea-shore,
Or mountain-built with peaceful citadel,
Is emptied of its folk, this pious morn?
And, little town, thy streets for evermore
Will silent be; and not a soul, to tell
Why thou art desolate, can e'er return.
O Attic shape! fair attitude! with brede
Of marble men and maidens overwrought,
With forest branches and the trodden weed;
Thou, silent form! dost tease us out of thought
As doth eternity: Cold Pastoral!
When old age shall this generation waste,
Thou shalt remain, in midst of other woe
Than ours, a friend to man, to whom thou say'st,
'Beauty is truth, truth beauty,—that is all
Ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.'

To mark the occassion, I wrote a random person named Christopher and told him what a self-important prick he was for shutting down the most important thing in my listless, internet-badass life. I screamed and raged at the dying of the insipid light, and told that foul bastard every sordid, horrible thing that was going through my mind.
Then I e-mailed Mr. Christopher and we had a good laugh as I forwarded him this other guy's angry and confused responses.

Ian the Mad - almost never posted outside the Black Lodge and left long ago. He came back briefly, made an angry comment or two, and disappeared again.
Forgotten Hater - CK's sister
Bill Door - Christopher Alt
Yogurt Waitress - Lynn Alt
Robo-Nutkin - Was a Nemmerle or Cntxt alt IIRC, but there were enough Nutkin Alts around that time I couldn't really keep straight who played who. Could have been one of Christopher's pretty easily too.
Damn, it's going to bug the shit out of me all night long that I can't recall the Lizard dude's name. I can recall the posting style and details, but not the user name.

I often heard bits and pieces of some kind of blowup with CZ over the years, but never heard what the details of it were. Or maybe I'm thinking of somebody else who left the board after he went after them. Eh, memory's fading in my old age.

No that can't be right. I showed up on the EZ Board in June of 2001. I had joined up just a couple months before moving to Louisiana, which was just before 9-11. I remember Nemmerle giving us reports about what he was seeing in NY at the time. At any rate, I joined right in the middle of the Jinx/DD/AZRogue webcam stuff. I think that was not long after the infamous "football theme", which I missed. I am almost certain that KK was a member before me, or if not it was around the same time. I know that JJ was making a map of NKL users right after I moved to Louisiana, and he put me on it. I'll have to double check at home, but I am sure that KK and A2Z were on it. At any rate, that summer and fall of 2001 was an explosive time of growth for NKL as folks like Stannis, Leopold, Limper and a bunch of others came in. It's confusing.

As I recall it, I started lurking in late 99, just before I met my wife-to-be.

I didn't ultimately join until the AQ dogpile from hell.

So many memories....geez, you know....that's just fucked all the way around. Ah well...things change, and things move on. That's a hard lesson I have had to learn to be honest. I'm not a fan of change....

I'm in much the same boat. IIRC, I came on sometime before Ashtal's helming (and, later, whelming). But for much of that early time I distinctly remember thinking "what the fuck is going on and why do I come here?" Then got hit in a drive by goatse by leo and it all began making sense.
I remember there used to be so many kicks in the teeth going around I'd post something in response to somebody's dumbass statement, and then just dread the incoming beat down that inevitably came swift and hard like the fist of god.

It's a form of culling, although not necessarily the weak as some might think. It was a rite of passage by fire in which those who passed were N(utkin|othing)landers. Unfortunately that rite of passage often left a sense of meanness behind of which many have yet to let go. It was that meanness untempered by a gentler sense of humor that was so detrimental to the continued existance of N*L.

I can't help but agree. Some people were incapable of letting it go. I realize the irony of my saying this given my reputation of picking a fight with anyone at any time over anything, but I'd like to think it was a different thing than pure cruelty with me. It's my own special conceit, perhaps.

You sure about JPB? I could have sworn she jumped in from Bulldrek after I joined, but I thought you were there before me.
Not sure, Cheesy just showed up one day in my book. I think he showed up with the rest of the Kwalish crowd like Holy Bovine and others, but I'm not 100% sure of that.
Haha I am? Actually in thinking about it, A2Z predates that. He was on the Ezboard, and I believe most of the Kwalish gang showed up after that when they got the London Ontario forum.
Kwalish definately predates everything, he was old school pantheon. It's A2Z I'm not sure of.
I'm going to investigate this A2Z mystery when I get home.
Okay, here's my time line.
My EhtoZ ezboard account was created on 9-11 so I could follow what were probably Nem's postings of what was going on. I'm pretty sure I didn't post for awhile though. I had lurked before that as well with a different account.
Kwalish of course was around long before me. I'm not sure about Holy Bovine and Madriel but I think HB was around because I missed the trouble with his screen name. I actually didn't know them in person yet. We didn't get together until later when it came up that I was in Windsor and one of their group was moving here and looking for a game. eventually I started going to London to join their group.
They were definitely around before we got the London subforum. Although a few of our other friends showed up then but didn't stay around long.
As for JPB she may have been around more than a week before me but I don't think I'm too far off. I'm sure Scut was around though. I missed the webcam stuff and only heard about it much later.
As a side note, I'm pretty sure I was responsible for Stannis. I started a thread bitching about something he said on ENworld and I think that was the first time he posted there.

Pretty much immediately after I registered at NTL (TH's version, maybe half a year before it imploded), I started posting. As I recall, my first post was about the Palestine/Israel conflict.
This was in the days when there was a special n00b forum, which I happily disregarded, thereby avoiding any teabagging or kickjunktakewalleting.
I started via the Pantheon, someone (I thing SN or CZ) desided I should get an invite so I went to the first NTL, then Murder Of Ravens etc. Was in the BL but got expelled for some reason :shrug:.

You had to bring this thread back? Ah, well, it's all fond memories for me, now. I never minded kicking in a face or two, in old NKL style, when called for, but never earned the anger, or felt it in return, that make the memories more bitter than sweet for some. I never took it that seriously and happen to be lucky in that a good beat down in one thread won't easily color my posting in another. So I'm just left with good memories.
My one regret is missing, due to my tidal behavior, that last day. I heard about the tribute and it's sad that I wasn't there for the pure selfishness of seeing everyone together in that place at that time.
Since I couldn't say it then I'll say it now so, pardon this salute. I mean, the thread was resurrected anyway, so it's not my fault. Blame the bunny!

"There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution.
Here it was they lit the flame.
Here they sang about `tomorrow'
And tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner
They could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices ringing
I can hear them now!
The very words that they had sung
Became their last communion
On the lonely barricade at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone.
There's a grief that can't be spoken.
There's a pain goes on and on.
Phantom faces at the window.
Phantom shadows on the floor.
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends, don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friends will sing no more."

So as someone who has been out of the loop for approximately 5 internet ages, can I get a quick starter kit on what's going on, who is who, and assorted other gossip since my last appearance. This would really help because I'm a) lazy and b) a lot more fun to be around when i'm somewhat clued in.
I was in the same boat when I came back from my last vacation. Basically what Name Lips said. After Nutkinland had its final curtain call, and skipping over various SNAFUs and drama bombs of that time, the community of posters that used to frequent Nutkinland ended up in mostly two places: CircvsMaximvs, and here, Kaytastrophe's.
The Circvs has a lot more users than here, since they migrate over from ENWorld so easily, and it has become (didn't start out that way) more rough around the edges and embodies, at times, some of the junk kicking we would often engage in on Nutkinland. They have their Hugglers, of course, but otherwise can play reasonably rough so you don't feel bad when you hit one of them upside the head.
http://www.circvsmaximvs.com/forum.php?styleid=34
Kaytastrophe's started with a smaller base (I believe) and is Belladonna's board, which she now co-admins with Brynja. Its smaller user base, posters with long history, and drama-free nature makes it a more tight knit place that is very appealing.
Nutkinland/Nothingland posters inhabit both boards, and many post on both, depending on what mood they're in. Some users have gone quietly into the digital dark, but they'll be back too. Or, to be more profound, carnival folk may smell like cabbage, but we all end up under the Big Top to see the show and to hear the bearded midget sing. Something like that.

My tribute to Nothingland, written at the time of NTL:SO:
Ten pretty maidens
Looking fair and fine
One ran into Lisa's axe
So now there's only nine
Nine pretty maidens
Went out on a date
One went out with Thanatos
So now there's only eight
Eight pretty maidens
Stayed out past eleven
Nightfang roamed the city streets
So now there's only seven
Seven pretty maidens
Browsed the web for pics
One saw VK's avatar
So now there's only six
Six pretty maidens
Went home with Bullit's wife
That's never a smart thing to do
So now there's only five
Five pretty maidens
Knocked on Milo's door
Screams were heard throughout the night
So now there's only four
Four pretty maidens
Went sailing out to sea
One ran into PSM
So now there's only three
Three pretty maidens
Were having trouble when they poo
One went out to see a doc
So now there's only two
Two pretty maidens
Broke into a run
Acynonyx caught up with them
So now there's only one
One pretty maiden
Thought Droid was a cute goth thing
VT found her home address
So now we're left with
Nothing

That was at the end of NKL, when the "tree" was dying. Probably my favorite time at any incarnation of NKL/NTL/Kay. That was because I was one of those rainbow squirrels. ;)

Yeah, it was pretty much perfect. Hell, the people I met there (many of which still post here) are still important to me to this day, and that's not something that usually happens because of a message board. It's another reason I'm always grateful to Bella for having this place, and for Brynja and Varaj for helping to run it.

I am in a seriously nostalgic mood today for some reason, and I was talking to my friend and mentioned something I once saw posted at Nothingland... And she made the mistake of asking "Nothingland?", so had the privilege of sitting through half an hour of a Cat waxing nostalgically about the best that the internet ever has had to offer, which had to die because the world couldn't handle its power and beauty... Credit to her, she managed to keep interested throughout my soppy ramblings and tried to understand.
I love Kay's to bits, this place rocks. But sometimes the nostalgia itches... It's like having lived on the rough edge for years and then finally finding a nice comfortable place, which is lovely and all you've ever wanted, but sometimes, late at night, after a few drinks, you look at the people around you and remember how you all used to be, and then you look out of the window at the stars and you remember the others that used to be there but are but a distant memory now... and a tear falls into your whisky.
Bless you Nothingland. You have been instrumental in making me what I am now, and time will tell if that is an accolade or an incriminating statement. :proposetoast:

I'd say something snarky, but I'm still trying to figure out who a few people are that I know are old timers, but using new names. I'm swift like that.
I was thinking about NKL/NTL (frankly, I can't really keep the timeline straight so I think of them as one big ever evolving piece) the other night, and it seems like a shame that people have forgotten the silliness of it. People occasionally bring up things like the Rainbow Squirrel Brigade and all, but often make it sound like it was all Flame Wars and People Up in Yo Personal Bidness every day, every post.
I remember Calvinball, rotating avatars (some eyebrows shot off some foreheads at some of us who "bought" them), the time a bunch of people all switched avatars with each other to confuse the shit out of the people who generally identified people off the bat by glancing at their avatar, the "argument" about the scene at the river in Bakashi's LOTR, etc etc. That was my NKL/NTL.
Cat of Ulthar

Exactly. There was some nastiness, sure, but some people seem to have the idea that that was the point. It wasn't. The reason that I had a tingle of excitement every time I started up my computer was that I knew I was going to be treated to some excellent humour. The reason for the nastiness wasn't the nastiness itself, it was just that people could and would do anything as long as it brought teh funneh, be it nice or naughty.
O Nothingland, the joy, the sorrow, the drama Queens, I miss it. Cats Paw I was Doc there too.
