Remember when I showed off my kick ass desktop (http://www.kaytastrophe.com/vb/showthread.php?p=38080#post38080)?

Well, the laptop and the moneybox have disappeared. :what:

Last friday, in broad daylight, while my roommate and I were at work, individual(s) entered my flat from the balcony (we're on the first floor, but the balcony is just 4-5 feet high from the ground). The door was locked, but I learned from the police that this damn door is as secure as Windows. Damn you landlord! (the door was pretty new, something like a year old max).

So, several hundred CDs (all mine), two hundred DVDs, three desktop computers, two high-end point-and-shoot digital cameras, one 42in plasma TV.... are still there.

What the?

I guess I have to sigh in relief. They were only after laptops and money; such robberies have recently been very common in my neighbourhood. This sucks, this place is supposed to be pretty safe. At least I'm moving in a month... where it was supposed to be less safe (due to population density, no more). :boggle:

So they took my laptop, and my roommate lost 50 bucks he was keeping in a small bottle on his desk. Oh, and the morons also took from me a sizeable amount of African money bills.

That one I got to laugh. The notes show huge numbers, like 10 000 or 20 000, the total is probably over 500 000. They must have thought they hit the jackpot. But although the total amounts to 400 USD top, they are worthless on the continent. Nobody will exchange them for you (not even at the Paris airport, actually). I just WISH they are stupid enough to try and exchange them. They will be very easily identifiable, and they might get caught more easily, and then I might hit them with a baseball bat just because they are idiots.

Ever since I saw that movie (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111732/) at the end of high school, I've always thought about the time I'd be doing a thesis in the future, and how I would always keep backup copies of my thesis, because of what happened to the guy in that movie. So, thanks to you Branden Fraser, because I lost no data.

Now comes the insurance paperwork. You must all be so jealous!

You have my sympathy and support.

Thieves are often very stupid like that. Fortunately, in your situation, these proved to be the stupid kind of thieves.

Glad to hear that you had backups of the data, I enjoyed that movie as well.

Between the african bills and your laptop not being either microsoft or mac, the cops should have an easier time id'ing your stuff if they get any leads at least.

Sorry about theft, but at least your other stuff was untouched and you had the foresight to have backups. Paranoia pays off sometimes! :D

(BTW: I don't typically like Brendan Frasier, but With Honors is a damn good movie. Joe Pesci is awesome! I'm glad it helped you out.)

Will insurance cover the loss of everything? I'd be telling the landlord that rent is on him next month since the place was suppose to be secure.

I'm glad you were wise enough to save your data elsewhere. That would've sucked otherwise. I triple save my work just because of fear of losing months of lab experiments and tables.

Glad no one got hurt. And may the robbers have a life time of bad karma.

These guys are probably focused on geting "in and out" as quickly as possible.

I hope something really horrid happens to them. I *despise* burglars.

Balcony doors are notoriously crappy. Have you tried the "sick of wood" security measure?

Ascare,
I have to ask where are you from you say... I would hate to think that my computer was the worst thing that someone coudl steal from me.. then if I'm honest it's the most important thing I own with bank and bills info on here.....

Hopefully the fucker got 100's of dollars he can't spend because of exchange..

Sorry I don't know where you are from I am still learning people on this board!

Good luck on pinning the bastard!!!!!!!

Insurance can only cover what we can prove. I have photos and the original bill for my laptop, including the carrying case. This is sufficient. Giving it's value four years ago, minus the 500$ deductible, I should get quite a beast in return. Laptops have made leaps and bounds since then.

It is useless to file a claim for liquid money that was stolen. It goes to show how doubly dangerous it is to keep your money at home. I never agreed with my roommate on that anyway.

The police told me that a girl in my neighbourhood did lose her thesis along with her laptop. Good life lesson there.

So, right now, what we have done is rather the "calculated pile of chairs" security measure, until the landlord does something. But they are unlikely to return, according to the police.

They better not.

<--- It's written underneath my avatar. I'm from awesome Quebec City, from awesome Beaver Land.. huh I mean, Eh Land.. oh, wait. Canada. The Frog part though. ;)

Now, you're freaking me out with the bank and bills info thing, but I had no password in my web browser cookies, to think of it... Whew. Well, anyway with Linux I'm pretty sure they won't bother trying to hack it. A reformat is the likeliest.

The bastards!

Aw, fuck that Ascarel! Good they didn't take all that much, but it's a huge annoyance being burgled anyway, if only the thought someone moved about in your house while you weren't there...

Hope everything goes smoothly with the insurance.
