Which I haven't. Contrary, ain't I?

I've been teetotalling for a few weeks before (and during) finals.

Not drunk at the moment, but this weekend I was offered some Portuguese green wine called Gazela (if my spelling is correct is another matter) - served cold it's eminently pleasant to drink, goes well with seafood or just as it is. Drier and more refreshing in taste than any white wine I've tried, and just a little bubbly. Cheap too I understand.

I've been pretty much tea-total since my mid twenties. I hate the taste of alcohol, always have. I only ever drink for the effect alcohol has on removing inhibitions, although generally it's better if she's the one drinking. ;)

I'm on my third glass of drink containing Johnny Walker Red in it. I blame my drinking on Christopher. He's the one who introduced me to the concept.

I've had a couple of glasses of a Madfish cab sauv merlot. Very tasty, but luckily a screw-top bottle, since I'm drinking alone. :( I know, very sad I can't drink a whole bottle on my own, but I do have to work tomorrow morning! I'll probably finish the rest on the weekend.

Heh! No I went to the evil bottle shop & got it. Didn't want to drink our good stuff without you. We definitely should go back to that winery or order some online or something. It's good stuff. :)

Just got home frome one's friend's place where champagne (French to be true) was on the menu was mixed with grapes. Then the night passed on to another's place where wine (red) and beer held the pallate in sway. Now I'm home again (tis drunk again) and feeling mighty mellow with some water to end the night.

Does it count if it was last night?

Went out to a local bar to watch a live band last night. It's nice to know I can still somewhat hold my liquor. 6 or 7 beers and a shot over the course of 3 hours with only a light buzz.

Ah, but you didn't title this thread, "Post here only if you've been drinking," which would limit posts to only those who are drinking. Rather, it currently takes the form of a command to those who are drinking that they must post here.

So, I have been drinking, at least a little. In a testimony to poor scheduling the
Red Sox and Patriots have games on television simultaneously. Now, admittedly, it's preseason football and approaching the pennant race in the baseball season. But, given my preference for the glory, the grandeur that was, errr, is, the NFL (screw Greece and Rome. You know where.) I had little option but to toss back a few beers and watch the games. I am, I believe, coming to understand why there is a warning on benadryl not to drink with it.

Getting sleepy,

Heh! No that's the other soulless corporate fuckers. :D We were referring to BWS. It sucks that it's so close to my local supermarket & easy to shop at. All our good locals are being taken over by massive corporations.

I have been drinking tonight too, so I think I'm allowed to post in this thread. Same wine as before - Cabernet/Merlot blend from Madfish winery in Margaret River (WA). It has been necessary due to an eventful weird day that I will post about in another thread after I have spoken to Coopers about it.

Yeah that's the one - it's owned by Woolworths, whereas Liquorland is owned by Coles-Myer. Speaking of which, LL recently bought out our great local drive-through, got rid of the excellent range, stocked it with cheap crap no-one has ever heard of, and I think will be losing a lot of business (it's lost ours anyway). This is why we need to find a good new local. I want to support small business.

Fortunately, we haven't had that problem. I think that there's a BWS down towards Williamstown, but I only notice it when we walk that way. Otherwise it's off my radar. I will admit to buying from Safeway Liquor occasionally, but the little mom & pop grocery two minutes walk from my house is also a bottle shop. It's not fancy, but it's a good place to get grog. There's a Cellarbrations about fifteen minutes walk away and they're very good. They have mead which I buy occasionally. There's also the Thirsty Camel (I think that's what it's called) and I'm pretty sure that it's local as well.

I'm sorry to hear that soulless corporations are taking over your local liquor store. If it's any consolation, you can take pride in knowing that it's local soulless corporations, rather than the foreign soulless corporations that are taking over the book, coffee and fast food industries.

It's really terrible, it's distressing.
The old place had a nice big fridge with a great reange of tasty local and imported beers - now the new place has pile of shitty imported beers one has never heard of - they are cheap shit, in all senses of the word.

I can't get any of the boutique WA beers that used to be there.

The main difference is that this is more diluted than a cosmo with melon, more "juicy". It's the kind of thing you can serve in tall glasses on a hot summer day. :)

Found this for you O Beaver of Northern Delights :), it's better the watermelon wine and you don't have to deal with old dogs and children

Watermelon Liqueur

Jul. 4, 2007 12:00 AM
750 milliliter bottle vodka, rum or tequila
3 cups cubed watermelon
1/4 to 1 cup sugar syrup (optional, see note)

Pour spirits into a clean, 2-quart glass container with a tight-fitting lid. Soak the original bottle to remove the label. Let dry.

Add watermelon to the spirits. Allow the spirits to infuse away from direct sunlight and intense heat 2 weeks to 1 month. Shake the container a few times each week. When you're satisfied with the intensity of flavor, strain the liqueur through a metal sieve into a bowl. Discard the watermelon. Add sugar syrup to taste, if desired.

Using a funnel, pour the liqueur into the original spirits bottle or another container. Label with the name of the liqueur and the date. Age 1 month away from light and heat.

Makes about 2 quarts

Note: To make sugar syrup, combine 1 cup water and 2 cups granulated sugar in a small saucepan. Bring the water to a boil while stirring. Reduce heat and continue to stir until sugar dissolves. Cool.

Black Angel
10-15-2007, 06:19 PM
I think you can do a similar thing to that, but keeping the watermelon whole, and just cutting a small hole in the top to put in a funnel, then gradually topping up with the vodka/whatever any time you go past for about a month or so. After that it's a very similar process, but cool for presentation! :D (I saw Jamie Oliver do this at some point anyway and it looked good.)

I'm enjoying the last glass from a bottle of merlot I opened last week or so.

If I weren't being so lazy I'd go to Costco and buy a gallon of Mango juice for my new favorite cocktail, mango juice and passion fruit rum. This is unbelievably yummy.

I am definately what people call a "light weight" or "cheap date". One of my old roommates has this thing for wine. I'd make dinner and he'd find a good wine to go with it then try to get me to help him finish off. Janos always claimed I was drunk after one of those dinners even though I would only have had about 2 glasses before I gave up and trotted back upstairs to my room feelign light-headed.

Neat single malt scotch, the true fuel of man. In this case, Glenfiddich.

Tough choice for the next bottle, though. I've no real desire for the Glenlivet, and the Glenmorangie varieties, while plentiful, are losing some charm. Tullamore Dew and Bowmores are the likely candidates.

Try some Laphroaig if you don't like Glenlivet. It's my reliable back-up sidekick when Glenfiddich doesn't show. The mash is distilled over peat, which makes it smell something like a cross between tar and sweedweed. Nevertheless, it's very sweet and mild.

Also try Ardbeg if you can, it's like an even muskier version of Laphroaig, but doesn't have the same aroma or flavor.

In large enough amounts it certainly does. I have some ex-Air Force friends who were stationed in Italy and swear by that and Grippa. More than once we've gotten really blitzed on the stuff.
