View Full Version : Dog drippings?

Alrighty, on to a disgusting topic.

I've got an old mutt that's somewhere around 10 years in age... that's our best guess. She was a stray when we took her in up on the Rez. Part lab, part terrier, and probably some husky in there too -- along with God knows what else.

She's normally healthy as a horse, but lately she's been (ewwwww) leaking from the back end. Whenever she lays down in a spot, there's a tiny little clear dribble whenever she stands back up... if she's been laying down long enough. Not much at all, perhaps the size of a couple quarters.

It doesn't have a discernable scent to it, and when dabbed with paper towel it comes up clear, so I don't think it's urine. But on the other hand, I'm unfamiliar with canine incontinence, and this could well be it. Or some kind of glandular thing.

Has anybody else run into this kind of thing with their house pests? Any tips on what it might be?

Had her anal glands expressed recently? I'd expect some wicked funky smell and a definite tendency to scratch/nibble at it if that was the case, but it might be what you need looked into.

Nah, she's never had a problem with them, and they've never been done (to the best of my knowledge). The other dog's had that problem, though, and there was the funk from Hell when that happened. No funk or ass-biting this time.

:( I hope it's just an oddly odour-free case of that.

I think the funk is from once it gets infected though (thus the scratching and biting), and she could just straight up be leaking.

If it doesn't stink, it's probably urine. Urinary incontinence (or, to use the $10 phrase, urethral sphincter hypotonus :p) is a fairly common problem in older dogs. The leaking where she lays is a pretty common symptom. Get thee to a veterinarian to rule out a urinary tract infection, then they can probably hook you up with something to TIGHTEN THAT SPHINCTER.

Pee as in pests(as in Northcott's first post)?

Sounds distressing, man, but I am not a vet, so I'd get the old girl checked out by one.

Thanks a ton, guys. The feedback's much appreciated. I'll be sure to get the old girl into the vet ASAP and see what they can do for her.

Especially to Strawberry, who not only used a $10 term, but then spent that currency on one of the worst Sesame Street-born puns I've encountered in my 36 years upon this sorry world. :)

diapers. they make doggy diapers. large dogs are especailly prone to incontinence in old age. go to a good pet supply store--check it out.
